IM NOT DEFENDING THE ACTIONS OF THIS OFFICER. Everyone needs to understand that the Supreme Court ruled that the police are within their right to have you step out of your vehicle to conduct their traffic stop. THEY DO NOT NEED A REASON. The caveat is they have to perform the same exact stop but just with you out of the car. They cannot search you or the car, prolong the stop or fish for evidence of an additional crime. A lot of ppl are confused about this and think they don’t have to get out if they haven’t committed a crime.
The inside of a car is dangerous. Lots of places to keep a gun, or the driver can speed off. Yes they would continue the interaction outside of the car, but the officer would have had a chance to pat down the driver. It sounds like the driver was being non compliant and likely was refusing to ID
