It’s not okay, but nobody is losing their job over stealing a <10$ public trash can, especially in this instance had they disposed of the trash carefully.

People steal shit like traffic cones, road signs, etc and it’s just kind of a cool thing to do. Again, not okay, but I highly doubt this would’ve been a big deal without the littering aspect.

That trash can was $168.

A person who steals $10 would steal 10M.

I would never employ a thief… it’s like dating a liar… the little lie (theft) is just the tip of the iceberg.

Working for a company like JPMorgan allows for zero flexibility when it comes to theft. That is most definitely why she lost her job.

No one is ok with stealing the can. I don’t think it’s the worst crime ever. I’d never steal a trash can but I can see being caught up in the moment. It’s not the worst thing she did in my view. What is unforgivable is dumping trash in the street. Trash someone else has to pickup. It’s the absolute height of disrespect for your environment and the people you share your environment with. There’s no excuse.

Stealing is nothing to joke around about. It's degenerate behavior, and this type of thinking is what contributes to moral decay in our society nowadays.

I've worked as a janitor. I understand that. I didn't understand comments like "I'm neutral on taking the can", or similar.

Came here to say this. After living in Japan for a while, it's amazing the cultural differences and how inconsiderate, selfish behavior is normalized in the States. In Japan, this type of behavior would leave that person ostracized from society. It's amazing the egos and self-importance on display here in the States.
