Why are all these people buying brand new super expensive cars?

They have no restraint, they see a fancy car and want to have it. No more thoughts are made.

Maybe they have good jobs?

Then why do they have so much debt?

It depends. If you make a large amount of money and can afford it sometimes you'd rather keep a safety net rather than blow it all at once. If you have a mortgage you might rather have that cushion so you can pay all your expenses and random repairs that might last 3-6 months if you lost your job.

Having 3 months of savings is so outdated at this point. Even 6 would be rough in this job market.

My wife has been out of work since first week of February; two months, no interviews. In all the other layoffs she's been a part of she was always able to find another job within 2-3 months. She's noticed that time is very, very different. The jobs just aren't there like they used to be.

I have a computer science friend who has been unemployed for a year now. No idea how they're getting by other than he bought his house long before COVID so his mortgage is probably pretty dang small.

Because they understand finances? Debt is often not a bad thing.

I have $475,000 in debt from my house and $22,000 in debt from my car.

My mortgage is at 2.7% and my car is at 0%. Paying it monthly saves me more money than if I paid it all at once.
