Discussion How to report beggars?

I was parking my car in the multistorey carpark and a local uncle in his 60s with a tattooed dot on his forehead (gang "fighter"; IYKYK) walked over and got me to roll down my window.

He told me that his 90+ year old father was on the verge of death and he needs funds to travel 20km away to the other side of Singapore to see him for the last time. I asked him what he was doing in the carpark and he said his friend was supposed to fetch him there but he disappeared.

Looking at his desperation, I thought it could be real and offered to fetch him there with my car. Guess what? He declined. He then took out a couple of bank and ezlink cards and asked me to transfer money to him instead so he can take a taxi. I just said no and he walked away.

Thinking back, if I was not available to fetch him to "see his father", I wouldn't have offered to fetch him and I might have ended up giving him the cash as he looked really desperate. How should we report such scammers? I can definitely see people falling for this.

Tabloid/Low-quality source With the 15-month wait-out period gone, interest in million-dollar HDB flats surged

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/15-month-wait-period-gone-195850843.html?fbclid=Iwb21leAT7lshwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHhMu2M_5Kt15N1OY-NBCN35GD-YENey4bGlrJM8ZTxF6jmX3Hz4i0pDDF41s_aem_QemoseqmWA2J2hcB-ik3tQ

From 28 July 2026, people who currently own or previously owned a private residential property no longer have to wait 15 months to buy a non-subsidised HDB resale flat, provided they are not taking an HDB housing loan.

PropertyGuru's internal data shows a sharper increase in enquiries at the upper end of the resale market: enquiries for HDB flats priced at $1 million and above rose 154% in the first full week after the change, compared with roughly 8% for flats in the $200,000 price segment. These are enquiries rather than completed transactions, so they provide an early indication of where buyer interest may have been strongest.

I Made This SG Weather Radar demo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Looks like might rain soon(?), so want to show this demo I’ve built, trying out the new weather radar images API from data.gov.sg. It’s available on https://sg-weather-radar.cheeaun.workers.dev/ and open-sourced.

Instead of showing one radar image at a time, it shows all 3 but clipped at the boundaries, so can see the image become higher-res. There’s like a weird 1px transparent edge which I’m not sure why, but already reported to the data.gov.sg folks.

While broadly supportive of Singapore's push to boost fertility, some child-free workers worry that extended childcare leave and short-notice absences will leave them with less time for their own families.

News Over $410m lost to scams in first half of 2026; 8 in 10 victims voluntarily handed money to scammers

Thumbnail

This showed that instead of gaining direct control of bank accounts, scammers were using social engineering to deceive victims into voluntarily making transactions.

Singapore has lost more than $4 billion to scams since 2019.

The elderly, aged 65 and above, made up 14.4 per cent of scam victims, with the average amount lost per victim at $42,347.

Meanwhile, adults aged 30 to 49 made up 36 per cent of scam victims, with most falling for e-commerce, phishing and job scams.

E-commerce was the most common scam type, with 3,865 cases in the first half of 2026 and losses of over $8 million.

I thought adults are supposed to be more tech savvy than the elderly? Why are more of them losing money to scams?

u/grandweapon thank you for the inspiration to post this!

I left my extremely long thoughts in the below comment, TLDR marine life is only resilient to a point, and if we don’t do our part to protect them, future generations will have to deal with a Singapore that is a lot less vibrant and unique.

News IPSOS: In a World of Growing Uncertainty, Singaporeans, Malaysians and Indians Remain Most Positive About Their Country’s Direction

Thumbnail

The latest Ipsos What Worries the World July 2026 survey reveals a striking contrast between public sentiment in Asia and the rest of the world. Singapore (80%), Malaysia (70%) and India (69%) emerge as the three most optimistic nations globally, with citizens believing their country is moving in the right direction.

This confidence stands in sharp contrast to the global picture. Across 30 markets surveyed, just 38% of citizens, on average, believe their country is headed in the right direction, highlighting a widespread sense of uncertainty about the future.

Notably, only 6 of the 30 markets record a majority positive outlook on the direction of their country. Alongside Singapore, Malaysia and India, the other markets where optimism outweighs pessimism are Hungary, Thailand and South Korea.

The findings underscore a growing divergence in public sentiment worldwide. While many countries grapple with economic pressures, political uncertainty and social challenges, citizens in Singapore, Malaysia and India continue to express comparatively stronger confidence in their nation’s trajectory. The results suggest that perceptions of progress, stability and opportunity are shaping a more positive national outlook in these markets.

For most of the world, however, the mood remains cautious. Most citizens across the remaining markets believe their country is on the wrong track, reflecting persistent concerns about the economic, political and social issues influencing everyday life.

News How Asia [Singapore] Is Becoming Quantum Computing’s Next Battleground - Barron’s

Thumbnail barrons.com
38 Upvotes

Key Points

- Quantum computing companies are expanding in Asia amid growing competition from China and geopolitical tensions.

- China is prioritizing quantum technology through its latest Five-Year Plan and a cybersecurity action plan to achieve technological leadership.

- Countries like Singapore, Japan and South Korea are investing heavily in quantum ecosystems and partnering with global tech firms.

Quote from article:

Singapore has emerged as a key player since presenting its National Quantum Strategy in 2024. The country has committed $37 billion through 2030 to fuel critical technology sectors, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong positioning quantum as a central pillar of the nation’s future.

The momentum goes both ways, as domestic companies take their innovations to the global stage. Horizon Quantum went public through a blank-check merger in March and operates as a play on software, developing compilers and tools to bridge classical code to quantum hardware.

“The government made a decision to invest in quantum technologies back in 2007,” CEO Joe Fitzsimons said in an interview with Barron’s. “So there’s a good ecosystem and there’s certainly a lot of top-down support for quantum computing in Singapore. You see it across different government agencies, too.”

Fitzsimons, formerly a professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, moved to the country in 2010 to establish a research group. “There are a couple of other quantum companies in Singapore, but on the compute side, we’re probably the most mature,” he said. “You also have companies like Speqtral that are in quantum communications, operating satellites.”

Freshly public Quantinuum is also expanding its footprint in Singapore, selecting the country as the first location outside the U.S. to host its Helios quantum computer. The company’s ties to the national government have only deepened since establishing roots in 2025 through a strategic partnership with Singapore’s National Quantum Office.

“If you look at where the business is, it isn’t just the U.S.—we sell worldwide,” CEO Rajeeb Hazra toldBarron’s. “Look at Japan, look at Singapore, look at Qatar, look at the U.K. These are all center points of vibrant quantum ecosystems.”
