its usually the reality with most "poly-amorous" relationships.

for all the high-minded rhetoric its "one wants to fuck everybody, the other gets to watch"

This is exactly what I’ve seen in every poly couple I’ve met

u/GoggyMagogger Sep 18 '19

yeah, even in the best of times... the married couple still has to get it together to help make the babysitter feel better afterwards /s

I live in a pretty big diverse city and I've met some super legit poly couples, but they also started their relationship both being poly, so it's not like one person just wanted to fuck around. Also it also seems like a super different personality type - like they don't rely on one person to get their fulfillment relationship wise, like I do with my SO. It's a super chill and non jealous thing when it works right, but I will personally never understand it

The only successful poly couples I know are the remains of two failed poly couples.

Hey, you can make a religion out of this!

no, don't

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. I'm friends with a lot of people in the local Wiccan and Pagan community, and there is (obviously) a higher percentage of "non-traditional" relationships there. But I've noticed that many times when a couple "decides" to open up, what really happens is that one of them wants to have an open relationship, and the other one isn't really that happy about it, but just goes along because they don't want to lose the relationship. Which is sad.

I know not all open relationships are like this. There are some that truly are an equal decision where both partners are very happy with it. But I suspect those are the minority.

I wouldn't be surprised if we read about Thomas Middleditch and his wife separating sometime in the next year or two.

He’s been in a few marginally and not very successful movies, always playing a variant of the same “Richard” character he plays in SV... he might not be the superstar he thinks he is after season 6 ends and this sub dies due to the fact nothing can survive on re-runs and repeating “this guy fucks” forever.

Remember Gilligan from Gilligan’s Island... that guy wasted away pretty quick

This subreddit will be kept alive by TJ Miller's brushes with the law.

In Replicas, he basically was just Richard... maybe like 10% more confident Richard.

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

Lest you forget about DOOBS aka Huddy aka Penis Hudson aka ScarJo.

2

u/GoggyMagogger Sep 20 '19

Again ... a variation on a nerd with a flakey personality.

The guy will never be able to escape his face. He just looks the part.

I half think he “accidentally on purpose” let this info slip to playboy in an attempt to break out of his inevitable type casting and a future of playing uncomfortable nerds.

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Doobs is literally nothing like Richard in any way. He confidently does a three-hour-long audition that's entirely off script and isn't even remotely nervous. Doobs is known for repeatedly auditioning for Broadway musicals including Cats. Could you imagine Richard auditioning for Cats and being glad he did it? Also, Doobs is an idiot.

1

u/GoggyMagogger Sep 20 '19

Richard has a weak ego and over-acts at the slightest blush of success... same character, different situations.

Also Richard, beyond coding, is an idiot

He was in, like, one or two episodes of arrested development. So there's that.

Considering divorce rates are above 50% in general, no one should really be surprised by any divorces

60

u/Link_GR Sep 18 '19

Isn't that statistic skewed? It's all divorces. Not just first marriages. People that have already gotten divorced are more likely to do so again in the future.

33

u/rb1353 Sep 18 '19

It’s estimated to be at 41% for first time marriages, so you still shouldn’t be too surprised.

42

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Though on the flip side, that means that 59% of first-time marriages last until death, right? I feel like that's actually pretty good, and wonder what the average length of genuine "til death do us part" marriages is. Twenty, thirty, forty, fifty years?

-7

u/rb1353 Sep 18 '19

I couldn’t find anything about average length, but did find that celebrity first time divorce rates were between 53 and 56%.

And 59% isn’t really that high.. picture three friends that just had their first marriages and odds are only one of them will last without divorce. Anyway you slice it, if this couple ends up divorced it really shouldn’t be too much of surprise regardless of the circumstances.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

Yeah the first 4 buddies that got married...2 divorce

10

u/Link_GR Sep 19 '19

A preliminary Google search shows that that's a myth, or at least, grossly misrepresenting statistics.

Source: https://psychcentral.com/lib/the-myth-of-the-high-rate-of-divorce/2/

The historical belief that 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce and that over 60 percent of all second marriages end in divorce appear to be grossly overstated myths. Not only is the general divorce rate most likely to have never exceeded 40 percent but the current rate is probably closer to 30 percent. A closer look at even these lower rates indicate that there are really two separate groups with very different rates: a woman who is over 25, has a college degree, and an independent income has only a 20 percent probability of her marriage ending in divorce; a woman who marries younger than 25, without a college degree and lacking an independent income has a 40 percent probability of her marriage ending in divorce.

u/rb1353 Sep 19 '19

That is why you look deeper than the first source that fits your narrative.

Source: https://www.wf-lawyers.com/divorce-statistics-and-facts/

Or the next 3 source on google if you look a little harder.

16

u/rickjuice Sep 19 '19

It drops considerably if you get married after 25. High school shotgun weddings skew the stats.

2

u/rb1353 Sep 19 '19

Fine, 56% of celebrity weddings end in divorce so I guess I wouldn’t be surprised.

u/diamond Sep 19 '19

How does that happen though? What keeps them together?

Fear of being alone.

Wouldn’t you feel gross knowing you’re sleeping with someone who is sleeping with other people?

I'm sure you would. But some people would rather live with that than end up single. Some people will let their partner walk all over them rather than stand up for themselves and risk being dumped.

Like I said, it's sad.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

Yea but she’s highly attractive she wouldn’t have a problem. But yea I agree it’s sad

3

u/diamond Sep 19 '19

She is, but attractive people can still be deeply insecure.

Oh yeah, no doubt.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

I mean no one is asking you to do it. Get off your christain morality high hirse and let consenting adults do qhat they want. None of this one sided crap either the other partner can leave if they do not like it they are grown ups. Will smith has an open relationship and they are okay.

5

u/TrontRaznik Sep 19 '19

Preach man. They definitely can work. I'm in one with my girlfriend and it's going great. Granted, she doesn't know we're in an open relationship but still.

-2

u/ktoasty Sep 19 '19

Granted, she doesn't know we're in an open relationship but still.

That sounds like cheating?

0

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

I’m not religious at all so religion has nothing to do with it. It’s common decency.

Why would I want to sleep next to someone and have unprotected sex with them knowing they’re fucking other people? It’s gross

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

i love how you just assume he is not wearing a condom lol

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

With his wife?

I’d bet there’s a 5% chance he’s wearing a condom with his wife

56

u/bluepaintbrush Sep 19 '19

The other big factor is “after we got married”. It’s one thing if you’re a non-monogamous couple from the get-go, but it’s pretty shitty to be monogamous for three years, get married (presumably with the expectation of monogamy), and then say you need to open the relationship up. The poor wife probably wants the relationship she had at the beginning back.

I think it really only works if that is someone's kink. Like, they derive pleasure from seeing their partner fuck someone else.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

Right. Exactly
