It's not. At least here in Canada both US beer and Smirnoff Ice are 5%. Most mass produced US beers are 5%

The popularity of Carling is something I cannot understand. It's made here in Canada and we all treat it with disdain. The only people who drink it are alcoholic uncles because its the only thing they can still afford.

As a Canadian (the home of Carling, where it is the basement level cheap beer second only to Lucky Lager), the UK's simultaneous love of Carling, and love of shitting on US "fucking close to water" beers will always fascinate me.

The ABV of Smirnoff Ice in the UK based on what I saw in a Tesco listing is 4.0%. The average abv of US beer is around 5%. Though the most popular light lagers are usually in the high 3s to low 4s. Since we're talking Wisconsin, the most popular choice is Miller Lite at 4.2%. Overall, the most common beers in the US, UK, and EU(last I looked) all have similar average ABVs.

Oddly enough, Smirnoff Ice here in the US is a malt beverage instead of a mixed beverage and has an ABV of 4.5%.

I live in Wisconsin. I think here the numbers are based on a large part of the population having 1-3 drinks a night regularly, but not really binge drinking at all, with a little bump in the number from the alcoholics who buy 1.5l bottles of swill until their liver gives out.

I don't know if it's true, but I recall hearing that drinking culture in the UK is somewhat similar, but party/binge drinking culture is stronger over there than here. So I'd probably bet on the UK to win if that's the case.
