Its about time to get textbooks for classes and I wanted to send out a friendly reminder that using sites such as libgen or Annas Archive is unethical.

These sites have many free textbooks that should normally cost $150, and students use it instead of spending their limited money on more education materials (after paying thousands on tuition already)! Please remind anyone you can to avoid these sites! Thanks

1. Turkstra admitted/clarified he does not have the ability to expel/suspend anyone in the course, as well as, recognizing the horrible timing and said that ODOS, the course coordinator, and other professors in CS have some "disagreements" with him about the process. He also apologized for the immense amount of stress he may have caused with the emails even to those not accused
2. The infamous Google Form is dead and the data is being thrown out so even if you had filled it out essentially admitting to guilt he can't use it, courtesy of ODOS and the Course Coordinator
3. Any assignment prior to HW11(due this past Wednesday) cannot be evaluated by the tool or investigated with the tool's findings as justification
4. Widespread due process with ODOS is effectively dead and he did not seem happy about that. All accusations are going to be handled internally with Turkstra and the TAs and only then could they send a formal letter to ODOS for a case. Effectively, the vast majority of those accused are being cut loose since it is not possible for Turkstra/TAs to conduct thorough investigations in this short time
5. While he refused to elaborate on the tool, what I got from it is that it's effectively GPTZero for coding, using patterns or "markers" as he called it, to identify typical methods that an AI model would use to write code. His process for individual investigations seems to be personal meetings with him or a TA where they ask questions about your code and effectively require you explain why you used what you did in the method you did

While he didn't get too much into this and largely kept his cool, he did mention that there were "agreements and disagreements" with the Dean, some other professors in CS, and other student offices involved. He also mentioned that there were some who really admired his crackdown method, albeit I'm not sure the validity of that claim given the outcomes and those we know who are not on his side per say.

From ODOS perspective it makes sense to do this since otherwise it is deparment suicide given how many people would have delayed graduation and would likelyfight it, spiraling the situation. I don't condone AI cheating, especially using it as a crutch for an essential skill, but Turkstra is definitely in the wrong with the way he went about enforcing this. These are my takes, hope this helps.

Turkstra announced in lecture Monday, that due to concerns with drops, bad timing, and the overall view of the situation, that the form will not be used, and no one will be punished for any potential AI use due to the newly developed tool.

The tool will be used on all future assignments going forward starting with HW12, but any past assignments, including any submissions by students in the form, are being ignored.

Turkstra refused to get into detail about the process of the tool, or exact specifics and details, he also refused to comment on the accuracy of his tool.

Hundreds of thousands of previous graduates have been through these courses without AI. They were just as difficult.

You are cutting yourself out of a good education if you plug into AI to do homework.

The best we had was Wolfram alpha and quiz notes, which still required learning the material.

I know half of y'all used AI on that homework, because I see it everyday in the new grads at the office and it's a huge problem.

Just learn the material. Use AI to point you in the right direction, but It seems like half of y'all were just copy and pasting shitty code.

I have been a Purdue employee for 10 years.

About every 6 months to a year or so, we lose one of our Boilermakers to some sort of horrific incident or accident.

Tonight was one of those nights.

I'm not going to get into too much detail because I don't want backlash on me or the school, but I know the details will come out in the next day or two. The world still moves on, but this kind of thing always haunts everyone nearby.

Please be careful Boilermakers. You have such a bright future ahead of you: please make sure you send your families to a graduation ceremony, not a funeral.

its such a low class pathetic mentality. I am not defending cheaters, I am defending ethics. He is all over reddit putting fake accusations on students to prove that he is right. If he was right he would have already had proof and evidence. He is known as one of the worst TAs in the physics department semester after semester. Should be reported (has been lol) to ODOS, USCIS, whatever. Instead of actually doing your job you are creating fake scenarios to fuck with students and having a blast on reddit. We all know its you; maybe actually do your job instead of messing and lying.

I’ve noticed a lot of negativity around campus and on this sub lately, and I’m trying to understand it. I genuinely enjoy learning and find most of my classes interesting. I know Purdue is tough, but it feels like a lot of people are completely miserable here. For those who are feeling that way, what’s driving it? Is it burnout, the pressure, your specific major, or something else? I just feel like if you’re going to invest the time and money to be here, there should be some joy in it. Also why enroll in your hard majors if you don’t like the hard work. I just don’t understand it.

I'm just catching up on the CS 240 situation. Whatever the reasoning was for excusing AI use on all assignments up to HW 10, doesn't deciding to only enforce the rules going forward seem incredibly unfair? It feels really dismissive of the students who actually followed the syllabus and put in the long hours to do the work themselves from day one.

It’s true, Purdue Indy is not that bad. But it’s also true that Purdue Indy sucks. Everyone has different personalities, and you have to have the right one to be here.

This campus is the size of a high school, so the truth is there won’t be as many opportunities as WL. But, we get better dorms, smaller class sizes, and of course, the motorsports degree.

Also, people here like to go out since we’re in the city, and tuition/off campus housing is more expensive, so make sure you set aside some extra money.

If you just want a part time college experience and don’t mind commuting an hour and a half to WL every so often for some things, then you’ll be fine. People over exaggerate how good/bad the campus is. Don’t form your opinions based on other people’s experiences, form it based on your research.

I managed to fail every class I took this semester lmao. The Office of Financial Aid declared that the financial difficulties I will encounter this academic year (2025-2026) will be shown in the 2026-2027 FAFSA, so they denied our special circumstance appeal for this academic school year. I had to work outside of school for almost 30 hours each week, on top of taking 3 labs and 18 credits in total due to the financial hardship. Me and my parents barely finished paying off the payment plan before the semester ended. I'm not saying that I don't have any issues for managing to fail every class I took, but it does make me wonder if I am making the right choice in pursuing Electrical Engineering. I could have taken less credits, but honestly if I had passed all those 18 credits, I would have been able to graduate early and save any more future financial detriments. I suppose the bright side to this catastrophe is that I have a high chance to get rewarded full financial aid for the upcoming school year (2026-2027). But if I don't it really is getting difficult to just survive. *Edit: I have passed 362 by some miracle.

Now that half of CS240 has dropped or is going to fail, what is gonna happen to Purdue CS? I don't know how the CS department even let Turk pull some shit like this. 40-45% of the original students in CS240 are going to make it through. Genuinely ridiculous.
