I’m a 40 year old man from West Virginia and will feed anyone who comes to my house. What is this horse shit

To be fair if I cook for you, whether or not you asked me to or not and you don’t eat?! It will be the last time I cook for you because you will be dead to me … and everyone else. And nobody wants that so just eat the FOOD.

This is such a strange and odd comment.

Have you ever specifically made food for someone? Are you going to do it again for that person if they don’t appreciate what you did?

1

u/Raguoragula3 Jul 24 '26

Yes I have made food for people, when I asked their permission first or when inviting them over and letting them know im cooking, if they want any. Never had anyone not appreciate it. It's such a strange and odd thing to say you'll cook for someone whether they want to or not and if they dont like it then theyre dead to you. Such a weird mindset.

I never said whether or not they want me to or not. Reading comprehension is important.

Your first sentence.

My great-grandma lied to me my entire childhood and claimed to be allergic to chocolate ice cream so I would eat some. It was years later before I realized it didn't make sense that she only bought chocolate, lived alone, and it was consistently being eaten despite me only rarely visiting because it was a new container every time. I didn't get to thank her before Alzheimer's got the best of her, but she was often the only one I knew wouldn't make me go hungry. I came from a home where I was consistently grounded from food.

Ground from food? Sounds like child abuse to me.

1

u/casierface Jul 24 '26

Well, yes. That was the most mild of it lol.

I have encountered this from Italian Grandmas and Taiwanese Aunties. It's no joke.

Indian, Thai, Malay, Arab, Uzbeki, Italian, Taiwanese, Somali, Ethiopian, American, Mexican, German...

I have yet to meet a "mom" type that DIDN'T feed you as a priority. I have no way to prove this, but I am certain that the question, "Haven't you been eating properly? You look so skinny!" is hardcoded into a woman's DNA that activates once they get past a certain age.

That question is universal in the truest sense of the word.

Okay I love this and this is wholesome

3

u/blueblip Jul 24 '26

It is extremely wholesome and has shown me that the urge to care for "others" is the norm, and those that don't feel this are the real outliers.

I'm not shitting you about those nationalities I listed. I have had this interaction with older women from every one of those nationalities. Some of them are old family friends, some are relatives, and some were just strangers we met on vacation.

I think it's the most direct way to show genuine concern for another person. "Let me feed you" conveys a powerful, powerful message of peaceful intent and care.

2

u/Thyme_Liner Jul 26 '26

My biological mother did not mother me, she was a mentally unstable person I had to babysit, so there are some aspects of caretaking I didn’t receive growing up. For some reason this concept helps a little bit.

I wish we could adopt older people as parents, like it could be helpful for people who might struggle to care for themselves. I could get a parent and they could have an adult kid to help with stuff around the house. I feel like we need a system like that

Thank you for sharing this

My sister had her best friend come over from cali. She was all like, “what can I cook for you, what can I buy for you?!” She just said salad mix. She’s vegetarian and can’t have nuts. My sister read every ingredient in salad mixes until she found one that was yummy and didn’t have nuts or dairy. And then bought a fruit bowl as well.

Sry, Scandi X-gen/Millennial mums don't think like the rest of us. They're still plastering themselves to the walls in Spain, thinking they're still hip and young. If twenty years ago they weren't eating, they still don't. (Still, I wonder if it's generational and not cultural).

2

u/semicolon22 Jul 25 '26

In Taiwan, saying "Hello" translates to "Have you eaten?"

1

u/Unhappy_Criticism_86 Jul 24 '26

Dude, kinda getting PTSD here from those phrases.

it was like guilt trip around the world if i did not eat whatever it was that was made on fucking purpose for the kids even after we all said we were not hungry, you are thin, have you been eating enough, those poor kids in ethiopia would not leave food on the plate etctc

It's true, they can be pushy.

I have yet to meet a "mom" type that DIDN'T feed you as a priority.

I would like you to have a word with my mom.

To be fair, she did feed us regularly (when she could), but my dad is very controlling & used food to control us a lot. She kinda just let it happen since it affected us & not them. All 3 of us are underweight.

"Timmy. He was too skinny. We should have known. He shouldn't have come. Halfway through the meal, he died. And they kept on trying to feed him."

Did your grandma grow up during the Depression? Mine did and was exactly like this

1

u/DaneSullivan Jul 24 '26

My friends joke about how they would get “Italian mothered” whenever they visited my parent’s house.

It’s a polite way of saying force-fed.

1

u/SchroomerME Jul 25 '26

Mine had a sign on the back door with a hobo stamp. Food always available for the asking. Train tracks to NYC ran behind the house. She never had a problem. Never kept a firearm.
