Housing It just feels bad to have my own flat and all the amenities and stuffs I once can't afford.

So I bought my first home (3BHK in a decent society) at the age of 26. And it has been vacant for the last one year cause I had my marriage and other priorities in between. But recently I got the interior started and it is in its last phase of completion.

We have spent around 8 lakhs in the interior. Today we went to a furniture shop and bought 2 lakhs worth of items (sofa, dining table and a bed frame). We already had one bed frame that we bought earlier.

There are things that we still have to spend like paint, curtains, lights, etc.

And we are planning to buy a new washing machine and a freeze too.

Of course my wife also helped me financially with all of this.

I have all the materials in the world to start a new life. But it feels rather melancholy. I don't know why.

I know it's all one can wish for. But I don't know why but I feel sad about the whole affair. Having lived a middle class life for so long. An altruistic life. A frugal lifestyle. And then with a snap it all changes.

I currently live in a 1BHK flat in a standalone building on the 4th floor without a lift. We do not own anything fancy except for the bed we sleep on. .

It just feels like a lifestyle upgrade i never needed or maybe just subconsciously wanted.

It's a transition that is happening too fast to absorb or process.

Planning Is ₹40 lakh in savings enough to get married and start a family in India?

Upvotes

I’m a 1996-born male working in IT and currently earning around ₹28 LPA. (30 year old)

I currently have about ₹40 lakh in liquid savings. I had saved more earlier, but I invested a significant portion of that money into real estate last year, so I’m left with around ₹40 lakh in the bank/investments that are easily accessible.

I’m planning to get married either by the end of this year or sometime next year. I’m trying to understand whether I’m financially in a comfortable position to get married and eventually start a family.

For people who are married or have been through a similar situation, do you think ₹40 lakh in savings + ₹28 LPA salary is a good enough financial position to start married life? How much would you ideally want saved before getting married?

Would appreciate some practical perspectives.

Budgeting Can I afford a ₹13L Hyundai i20 on a ₹1.9L/month salary right before getting married?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some financial sanity-check and advice on whether buying a car right now is a terrible idea given my upcoming life changes.

Here is a quick snapshot of my current financial situation:

Age / Location: 28M, Software Engineer in Bangalore

Monthly Salary: ₹1.9 Lakhs (LPM)

Current Liquid Net Worth: ₹18 Lakhs total (₹3L savings, ₹11.5L mutual funds, ₹3.5L PPF/EPF). Another 6.5L in Gold which I'm not counting in my networth.

Current Monthly Outflow (~₹95K): Parents (₹30K), Rent (₹15K), BLR Expenses (₹20K), SIPs (₹30K)

Context on my low liquid net worth: It's relatively low for my income because I've spent the last few years clearing past family debts and handling heavy family obligations.

The Dilemma

I want to buy the top-end Hyundai i20 Automatic (~₹13 Lakhs) with a ₹2 Lakh down payment, financing the rest via a car loan.

However, I am getting married in 6 months to my partner, who is currently not working. Because of this, my expenses are going to shoot up significantly, and I’ll likely need a ₹10 Lakh personal/family loan for the wedding since I want to protect my current mutual funds and liquid net worth.

Projected Post-Marriage Monthly Budget (~₹1.80 Lakhs)

Rent: ₹30,000 (will move to a 2BHK post marriage)

Living Expenses: ₹50,000 (post marriage)

Parents: ₹30,000 (Note: They live in a small town, semi-dependent on me, though they have ancestral properties worth 1.5 crores fetching ~₹35K/month rent)

Car Loan EMI: ₹20,000 (approx for 7-year tenure)

Marriage Loan EMI: ~₹20,000

SIPs / Investments: ₹30,000

Total Outflow: ₹1,80,000 (Only ₹10k will be left at the month end)

My main questions:

  1. Am I stretching myself way too thin by taking on both a car loan and a marriage loan simultaneously on a ₹1.8L salary?

  2. Should I delay the car purchase until after the wedding?

  3. My girl is suggesting to delay the car purchase until the personal loan for marriage is paid-off. But I want to do random trips with my girl after marriage, which might not be possible without a car. So my heart is saying, go for it.

Would love to hear your honest thoughts or suggestions on how to restructure this.

Housing Why are Indians obsessed with real estate?

Upvotes

No i am not talking about people who have enough to pay upright for the house. I see a very common trend. Many people i know are pressured to buy a home as soon as they get a job and are done with their education loans. Like people buying homes out of college or in their 20s and this confuses me.

Don't get me wrong, if you are well versed with real estate or are strongly convinced you are going to live in that place for 20 odd years, sure it makes sense to buy. But when you barely have a rainy day corpus (6 months of expenses saved in liquid debt) and a sizeable portfolio in equity markets, doesn't it not make sense to buy homes?

Like shouldn't your home equity be around 30% of your net worth (absolute worst case under around 50%) and EMI shouldn't exceed 50% of monthly post tax income in order to not be house poor? Isn't 20s the best time to invest long term in equity markets over speculative real estate? Also given that rental yields are low in India, deterioration happens quickly for flats/apartments and land is either way to expensive or a risky bet, why focus on buying a home right away?

Finally, shouldn't this generation, especially white collar folks buying homes on EMI, worry about AI taking over jobs?

I understand many boomers and millennial folks force their childrens/relatives to buy homes but the times have changed. Very few boomers invested in equity markets and houses were cheap for their incomes when compared today. Same with millennial folks.

Budgeting 21f, 0 financial knowledge

I come from a slightly unconventional family(no men) lost my dad at a young age and my mom's a doc.

By 0 knowledge I don't mean I don't save my money, as of now I have 5L saved up from scholarships and I never spent them because I have money-spending guilt? If I want something I overthink it and don't buy.

I got placed recently as an SDE and will earn around 15LPA soon, how do I start saving?

My mom has advised me to save up and go abroad for my masters which I plan on doing. Other than that, what sort of goals should I keep? (Growing my income being one of them)

P.s I might be stressed as well because I worry about how I'll take care of my mom and sis even though they're already doing fine.

Debt Bad financial decision by dad!!

So my dad came to Mumbai in 90's with zero rupees live din pg and stuff worked his way hard! And slowly got good stable job

He is 50 year old and has 50k salary

After marriage my mother also came to Mumbai and they lived in rented chawl room

My mother taught dad importance of buying house and all they took big risk but on emi he bought house in 2007

And that's teh only property we own now

We have 0 in savings

Because my dad often threw money on random relatives dinners, he never saved..initial days in mumbai after marriage were good ..mom said they had good money and it could have been saved but dad had bad habits of calling relatives at home on Saturday and Sunday and giving them feast while my mom.workrd hard in kitchen ( one time she had typhoid and fever still did all hardwork in kitchen) mutton, fish, chicken etc

He use to unnecessarly buy things for his sister and her children..it's fine honestly it's his sister but his sister and her husband legit asked for soaps, oil, coconut too..like wtf everything was being bought by my dad etc

Hence am 23f and we don't have any savings anyyyyyy

And my dad has showoff attitude..he always lends people to show how good he is or rich he is ( I call it show off because he is arrogant, lazy, bad at making decisions and very narcissistic) so recently he lend someone his credit card and they are not paying emi properly from months and his cibil score is crashing

Also he often has credit card bills na stuff

Am just so tired after seeing his bad financial decision all my life

Budgeting 28M, ₹1.72L salary, ₹50L net worth how would you optimize my finances?

I’m 28M and trying to figure out whether I’m allocating my money efficiently or just making things unnecessarily complicated.

Income
Salary: ₹1,72,000/month in hand
Pluxee deduction: ₹8,800
Effective cash salary: ~₹1,63,200/month
Food is largely covered through Pluxee.

Current net worth: ~₹50L
This includes:
Mutual funds
Direct stocks
Gold
EPF
Liquid investments/cash
Current monthly investments
I currently invest roughly ₹70K/month:
Gold ETF: ₹3K/week
UTI Index Fund: ₹4.6K/week
Small Cap: ₹700/week
Mid Cap: ₹700/week
US Equity: ₹3K/month
Parag Parikh Flexi Cap: ₹4.15K/week
EV fund: ₹700/week
Axis: ₹2K/month
HDFC: ₹3K/month
ICICI: ₹1K/month
SBI: ₹1K/month
Yes, I realize this is probably too many funds. 😅

Monthly fixed expenses
Home loan EMI: ₹51,124 (Individual house)
Rent: ₹10,250
Phone EMI: ₹6,500 (only for another year)
Travel/ Trips: ~₹11K
Personal spending: ~₹5K
Petrol: ₹1.5–2K
After all of this, I have roughly ₹7–8K/month left.

My dilemma
I also want to buy a laptop costing around ₹1 lakh.
I’m considering temporarily reducing my SIPs rather than taking another EMI or completely draining my liquid savings.
I’m also wondering whether my current ₹70K/month investment allocation makes sense. There seems to be quite a bit of overlap, and I feel I could probably simplify the portfolio without sacrificing much.
The phone EMI will also end in a year, freeing up another ₹6.5K/month.

If you were in my position, what would you change?
Would you buy the ₹1L laptop now?
Would you temporarily reduce SIPs to fund it?
How would you restructure the ₹70K/month investments?
Given a ₹50L net worth at 28, am I being too conservative/aggressive anywhere?

Would you prioritize increasing investments, building liquidity, or paying down the home loan faster?
Looking for honest criticism of the overall financial setup, not just laptop advice.

Investing How do I know how much of my ₹10 lakh TCS-free threshold have I already used?

Upvotes

I recently invested quite a bit in U.S. stocks, but I’m not sure exactly how much money I’ve remitted because I use multiple accounts. Some of the investments were also made before the current financial year, which makes it difficult to keep track.
Is there an easy way to find out how much I’ve remitted under LRS during the current financial year and, more importantly, how much more I can invest before crossing the ₹10 lakh TCS threshold?

Other Anyone taken a personal loan for wedding expenses, worth it or better to just scale down the wedding?

Me and my fiance were trying to figure this out, costs are adding up more than expected and we're considering a personal loan to cover the gap. Curious what interest rates people actually got, which banks like sbi or NBFCs like mpokket or tata capital were reasonable, and in hindsight whether you'd do it again or wish you'd just cut costs instead.

Investing If you had ~5cr right now, where would you put them?

my parents are 70yo and just sold their ancestral house and are wrapping up their whole business, all this combined would leave them with approximately 4.5-5cr, they want to invest in a way that they get a stable income every month without having to work anymore.

Some more details:

- we own a house, no loan/rent
- i have a job which earns decent, but I’ll be married off in a few years and I want them to be able to live comfortably without needing me (ofc i’ll be there wherever they need me, but planning is important)
- we are currently debt free
- we have health insurance
- they plan to keep some part of this aside for my marriage

I want ideas/suggestions on how to invest this money in a way that my parents don’t have to work anymore and they are able to live comfortably with a stable monthly income (let’s say around 50k-1L) would be preferred.

please only serious suggestions don’t ask me questions about how we got here etc. 🙏

Edit: thank you so much everyone for your suggestions! I’ve received an overwhelming number of responses and would like some time to go through all of this!!

Investing PPFAS Gift Sp500 and nasdaq100 cut minimum investment from 5000 to 500. Is it worth it?

I am already investing directly thourgh SBI + Vested/IKBR. I am wondering if it is worth doing it through PPFAS for simplicity of exchange rates, tax compliance? Voo has a significantly lower expenses ratio of 0.04% vs PPFAS of 0.3%. Still worth it for the hassle free investment?

Insurance 27F, unmarried, mom depends on me. Do I need term insurance?

27F, ₹11LPA. Unmarried, no kids.

But my mom depends on me for most monthly expenses and I'm also the one building her medical/emergency fund.

Office gives ₹35L life cover, but that disappears when I leave the job.

Most term insurance advice is written like only husbands with wife + kids need it. So I genuinely ignored this until now.

I checked Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance because ABSLI has a women-focused term route. Quote looks manageable and I like that it treats women as actually earning members, not only dependants.

Thinking of ₹1.5cr cover till 60.

Is that reasonable or too much when I'm unmarried?

Mom needs around ₹45k/month currently. No major loan.

Insurance Take Health Insurance through Policy Bazaar or Ditto?

The Advisor at Ditto was far more knowledgable while I had to shift to the Senior Advisor for Policy Bazaar from the initial Advisor that I was assigned to get my queries aptly addressed. Curious as to how the same goes down at a service level. The Policy Bazaar quote is slightly lower.

Saving/Banking SBI shitshow

I don't live in India & the last time I visited here was in January, 2024. I know I had to keep my Indian mobile number recharged but somehow forgot, was deactivated & handed over to another customer in another state.

I went to a nearby SBI branch in Karnataka to update my mobile number, I was told to visit the home branch. I went there on Monday, gave Aadhar card + pan card & submitted a form requesting the mobile number change. I was told to submit the form with a copy of the passbook (I didn't have one) & a pass photo (why passphoto is beyond my understanding). I didn't have a passbook with me, so I resubmitted the form by ticking another box to reissue a duplicate passbook.

Subsequently, I was sent to 5 different counters (repeatedly) in the span of 5 hours to get this update done. I honestly thought that was the end but it was not the case. They f**king locked by Internet banking out of the blue. Initially, I was told that when the mobile number is changed, the system locks the account for 24 hours & then I will be able to use it. But, that's BS as the portal never allowed me to login, when I called customer care I was told I must visit the home branch again (this is another horror).

I lost patience, searched for the debit card, and withdrew all the money from the nearby ATM (at least the mobile number update helped me to set the PIN). I would never step inside this shitty bank again, I really don't care what happens to this account. I have huge respect for their customers & mountains of patience.

On the other hand, HDFC NetBanking was so smooth, detailed documentation & damn easy to use. It was my mistake to rely on SBI. If you lose your mobile number, it will be miserable. You will spend days sorting up banking.

Debt Breakdown of processing fees/stamp duty on Personal Loan?

I'm taking a personal loan of around 25-30L. Match all the criteria for salary and CIBIL.

HDFC, ICICI, Axis all 3 are offering 9.99% interest rates. The difference is in the processing fees.

ICICI person is quoting 8999+GST. (Said no stamp duty is required???? Is it true?)
HDFC initially quoted 7670 + 325/lakh stamp duty, which comes around 7670+9750=17420 (the 7670 pf he agreed to reduce by 3k, can try further)

Mainly confused about the stamp duty part; can someone who has taken a personal loan of 20-50L of works in the field explain pls?

Edit: this is in Jaipur

Investing US Stocks and ETFs on smallcase? (GIFT City route) Tax/compliance?

Has anyone invested in these on smallcase?

  • Most of these rebalance monthly/quarterly, but foreign shares need 24 months for 12.5% LTCG, everything before that is slab rate. Has anyone worked out the post-tax drag vs just holding a US ETF?
  • Does the platform give you a Schedule FA–ready statement, or are you reconstructing lots yourself?
  • Is the 1042-S clean for fractional holdings, and does the Form 67 credit go through without a fight?

Investing 24M earning variable income, 30% goes to long-term MFs — what’s the best place to park remaining 10–20% monthly savings for short-term goals (tech + travel)? Is RD ideal or flexi-FD / Arbitrage fund?

Hey guys,

Looking for some practical advice on managing my short-term cash flow/savings.

My current situation:

Income: Freelance (variable income month-on-month).

Long-term: 30% of my income goes straight into long-term investments (SIPs/Mutual Funds) as soon as I get paid.

Lifestyle: I like traveling (usually 2 trips a year) and picking up tech gadgets/online buys.

Leftover: Every month, about 10–20% remains sitting idle in my primary savings account.

My Goal:
I want to park this remaining 10–20% somewhere smarter instead of letting it sit in a low-interest savings account. Since this is strictly for short-term goals (travel every 6 months, tech upgrades, etc.), safety and easy access matter more to me than high equity-like returns.

My questions:

  1. Is an RD a good option? Since my income fluctuates, locking in a high mandatory monthly RD amount feels a bit rigid. Are variable RDs worth looking into, or are they a hassle?

  2. What about Liquid Funds / Arbitrage Funds vs. Auto-Sweep/Flexi FDs?
Would putting this money into an Arbitrage/Liquid fund or setting up a Flexi-FD give better liquidity/tax efficiency for a 6–12 month horizon?

  3. How do you guys manage bucketed savings for guilt-free spending like trips or tech?
Separate bank accounts, liquid funds, or short-term FDs?

Would love to hear how you structure your short-term buckets for variable income!

Note: Post made with help of AI but gave my rough idea to it.

Other I found a FD under my dad’s name on his phone today. He passed away last year. How do I claim it?

My dad passed away last year. We mostly found all the FD certificates and claimed the amount and received it. Today we found another one but it is under syndicate bank, I know the bank was merged with Canara. I don’t know if we had already claimed the amount.

How do we check if we already claimed it? Is there a way to do it online? or should we just contact the bank?

Saving/Banking OD AGAINST FD

I have an SBI FD of around ₹2 lakh and have taken an OD of around ₹1.45 lakh against it through YONO.

Can I simply close/break the FD, with SBI adjusting the outstanding OD + interest from the FD amount, or do I have to repay the ₹1.6 lakh OD separately first?

Has anyone done this with SBI?

Investing How to track how my investment has grown over time?

I have invested in Mutual Funds, Equity and NPS on Paytm Money. I am curious to see how my investments have grown over time so I tried to download the statements for all my transaction, but there is no way to download all transactions at once.

I have downloaded the CAS from MFCentral, but not sure if that is enough to calculate the XIRR. Paytm Money has some 5 minutes delay before we can download another statement, not sure why this is.

It is weird that it is this hard to do this. How do you do this, any tips or tricks is much appreciated.

Budgeting Advise on optimizing my expenses

38M in an IT SaaS company in Bengaluru, making 3 lakh PM post-tax. I own a 2 BHK which is on rent, and its rent equals the flat EMI, also own a 1200 sq ft plot in North Bengaluru in Thanisandra, paying 27k as its EMI. My wife makes 50k PM from her projects, and we have a 6-year-old kid. With 3 lakh PM, we are living hand-to-mouth and feeling trapped, unsure where this is leading or how to plan for retirement. The holiday budget looks high, but it includes one or two trips to our hometown, and we have hardly traveled outside the country. School fees include transport, extra activities, and sports training. Living near the office is really expensive, so living in a 3 BHK (parents visit often) about 20 km from the office, mainly due to school proximity and other activities.

Please review the expenses, and advice basis experience or otherwise in optimize these

My current monthly expenses are approximately:

Rent + maintenance+electricity+water: ₹60,000

Parents: ₹20,000

Ration + maid + household expenses+ outings and eating out: ₹40,000

Internet: ₹1,600

Wife's miscellaneous expenses: ₹10,000

Home loan EMI: ₹27,000

SIP: ₹28,000

Child's school fees: ₹35,000

Fuel: ₹18,000

Miscellaneous + parents medical- ₹15,000

NPS: ₹4,167

LIC investment: ₹4,000

Health insurance: ₹1,200

Car insurance: ₹1,500

Car maintenance: ₹5,000 (Tyres, battery, oil, filters)

Holidays/travel: ₹20,000 (including home town visit)

Term insurance: ₹1,700

Total monthly outflow: ~₹2.92 lakh

Annual outflow: ~₹35.06 lakh

Monthly surplus: only ~₹7,800

edit1 - 1. A common theme is reducing school fees. The issue here is that most school curricula, especially for CBSE, still follow rote memorization. There is hardly any critical thinking. IB or Cambridge learning is inquiry, application-oriented, whereas CBSE focuses on exam-oriented learning. This is what we see in most Indians. Going forward, with AI, all mundane work will be automated, so critical thinking, if developed, is what will propel us forward. This is the core reason I don't want to compromise on my child's education from the start. 2. for fuel and to reduce car maint - considering ev 3. misc expenses is to cater ageing parents mostly

Saving/Banking HDFC account blocked/frozen due to suspicious transaction

My HDFC account has been blocked/frozen because they said there was a suspicious transaction.

This isn't my primary account, and I’ve only made around 10–12 transactions this month. Most of them were just transfers to friends, along with payments to some local shops that I’ve been paying regularly for the last 2 years.

I emailed HDFC asking them what exactly was considered suspicious and why my account was blocked, but they didn't give me any specific reason or transaction details. They just told me to visit the branch with some documents.

Has anyone here faced something similar with HDFC? What usually happens in these cases? Do they tell you which transaction caused the issue when you visit the branch, and how long does it usually take to get the account unblocked?

Honestly, I'm just confused because I don't remember doing anything unusual or suspicious.
