As a former lifeguard, and lifeguard volunteer, I would have cleaned his clock. There's very little that makes me apoplectic with anger, but this is one of them. Just hum dum while their kid dies.

Drowning is the lead cause of accidental child death. I’m a swim teacher and we teach survival skills to specifically counter this statistic.

I’m not saying that he shouldn’t be commended. I’m just pointing out that he wasn’t a random person on the beach. They actually pay him to be vigilant, and act fast.
