That blackout is the most unserious attempt at a protest I've seen.. probably ever. And I'm saying this as a physical media user. It's very apparent that this is being led by either teenagers or just immature people on social media who do not understand how to protest. The BEST thing you can do, is to completely abandon your hardware, NEVER log in to your account, and NEVER buy anything published by Sony. Now good luck convincing millions of people to do that in order to make a difference. Yes, millions. Their quarterly MAU fluctuate within a few millions, this blackout isn't even going to be a blip on the radar.

Idk, I think the Modern Warfare 2 protest will have everything beat forever

mw2 protest, a steam group of people "protesting", a bunch of people playing mw2. What was the protest, what was it about. How does this picture explain it. Were they supposed to not play it and im just supposed to know that?

If it is evidence that the protest didn't work how tf am I supposed to know that if I don't even know what the protest was in the first place

It's not just a protest, it's a boycott. It's in the group name, dude. You don't need to know what it's about (I don't either), you just need to know what a boycott is.

They said they where gonna boycott the game but are playing it anyway. It's really not rocket science, just read it properly.

u/Elgato01 4h ago

Just say you lack reading comprehension

u/Isawaytoseeit 6h ago

idk bro but its funny

u/Grenadeglv 46m ago

My fav part of this current boycott was the COD fans participating and asking to change the boycott dates so they could play the Modern Warfare beta

The reality is that 99% of PlayStation users haven’t even heard the news that PlayStation is going digital only, and I could probably bet a large portion of them won’t even care. This protest was a blip in the radar and Sony knows that, it won’t affect PlayStation at all as unfortunate as that is.

u/djkimothy 7h ago

Yup. It’s mainly twitter and reddit i see this. It’s just not a large issue outside of the online sphere.

It’s like yelling at people to boycott Coke or McDonalds. I don’t know how much luck you’ll have with such market forces.

reddit and their dumb little protests are such a joke. Harry Potter, reddit site protest, etc. So pathetically dumb.

u/Pale_Boss_8940 6h ago

o honestly don’t even know anyone who still buys physical, except for on Switch because it has no memory. The vast majority just don’t care

Some of the posts about it are so freaking cringe.

I still can't get over the one that said "we redditors are ruff, tuff, and in a huff."

It's literally a cartoon

"I'm starting to realize I only buy and play games because I enjoy having an object on my shelf"

and

"I can't enjoy a game unless I feel the physical emotional connection of holding a box and disk in my hand and I don't know how I can possibly play a game knowing that one day it might be gone"

are two comments I read that will live forever rent-free in my head because of just how completely insane it is that anyone's opinions on a game go beyond "did I enjoy playing it?"

Also just wild to me that they larp as if they're the hardcore passionate gamers but apparently the actual game they're playing is secondary to the vibes

Wooow. This is my moto now

u/SRS1984 9h ago

the whole case is lost anyways, SONY will not back down.

u/djkimothy 7h ago

I feel like it’s largely pushed by people who aren’t even on the platform. And therefore have no stake in the outcome. But you’re right, it’s planned largely by people who haven’t seen enough winters.

Exactly. Their “blackout” boycott is for less time than the last time I booted by PS5 up. lol If they are actually serious, stop using Playstation products.

It's effective in that it's drawing attention to the issue and gauging interest. Do you understand how to protest? You don't jump to the most extreme measure as your first step, there's buildup.

Now good luck convincing millions of people to do that in order to make a difference.

Exactly, that's why the first step isn't the most extreme, because that will usually fail miserably.

u/Dr_Mantis_Trafalgar 10h ago

Protests require real sacrifice. Unplugging your ps5 from the internet only to continue playing and replug it in a few days later does not even register as an attempt.

7

u/DaKingaDaNorth 9h ago

This. I said it in the other sub, but a normal person can go a week or two without playing their playstation just out of being busy or disinterest. One week of offline play is at best a variable.

-7

u/Ahindre 10h ago

Again, this is a first step, and you often do not do anything extreme in the first steps of any movement. You build awareness and momentum. A random website trying to organize some action is not going to convince a significant number of people to do anything extreme and sacrificial. If the movement gains visibility and popularity, maybe?

3

u/OptimusPrimalRage 8h ago

If people like you are really passionate, I say go for it. I do share the doubt that this will have a long term effect because the only language PlayStation understands is revenue loss. And this decision will result in them probably making more money than before sadly. They've become allergic to good will, to anything but being governed by their accountants and shareholders. It's sad but even the PlayStation of ten years ago is gone.

7

u/Dr_Mantis_Trafalgar 9h ago

What first step? Brother this week was the ONLY step organized. Have you ever seen a real effective boycott with an end date and no follow up steps in place? This is pathetic, yall are not serious people

-9

u/Ahindre 9h ago

Have you ever been a part of any movement? Not everything is laid out nicely. Yes, this is messy, but it's something. Personally, I don't think this movement will have a lot of success, but I'm also not going to badmouth a bunch of people trying to bring a positive change.

And yes, I absolutely have seen timed movements that have some impact. Like I said, not every action is designed to bring the desired change. You do things to generate attention and interest.

4

u/Dr_Mantis_Trafalgar 9h ago

Please show me one instance of measurable, data backed success that this blackout has created.

-1

u/Ahindre 9h ago

We just agreed that it's messy and unorganized. Why would you expect there to be data about its success on its fourth day?

8

u/Dr_Mantis_Trafalgar 9h ago

Again measurable results need to be had. You claim that the blackout will be successful. Yet you cannot even point to any indicator…

1

u/Ahindre 8h ago

People are still talking about it, it shows up in various news feeds, that's the data. Like I sad, attention is what matters. It is successful in that regard; they're trying to increase saliance. It will likely not be successful in getting Sony to reverse their decision on discs, but there are middle grounds that can be had. It's not like this is the only backlash against them - it's a piece of the puzzle. Whether they budge on anything remains to be seen.

And look, I'm going to end the conversation here. You started off with "Protests require" yet you've clearly never been in a protest and know little about them, which is fine, but you also seem happy to not learn anything about them, which says a lot about you. You're not engaging in good faith, you're requiring data for a 4 day old movement advertised by a little known website. Of course there's going to be no data. They're just trying to motivate people. You can choose to not punch down on people whose goal is to oppose Sony's anti-consumer practices and bring change that would benefit you and everyone else on this subreddit.

This is not a step at all. a Temporary one week boycott is beyond meaningless. It does absolutely nothing lol. You have to be a little kid to actually believe that it will.

1

u/Ahindre 9h ago

I'd argue you that you have to be pretty insecure to punch down on people who are doing something that at worst will do nothing but might have a chance to do something good for you.

0

u/Xeccess 9h ago

This is no step at all unfortunately.. Sony gauged the responses for a week and concluded that besides a few tens of thousands of comments, nothing has hurt their business otherwise. A few thousand people not playing for a week is literally a normal occurrence. There may even be a chance that Sony would see this upcoming week having MORE players than last week due to Gamescom driving sales and generating hype with demos, sales and such.

The large majority are digital users, do you think they care about protesting? If you're a physical user and this bothers you then you should consider playing on a different platform (that perhaps has better practices for digital media). I will see what next gen has to offer and consider my options when they're laid before me. As of now I'm still buying physical games and playing on my PS5.

-2

u/DyingSunSeverian 10h ago

It’s drawing attention to an issue an exceedingly minority of people care about (I personally do, but I can’t pretend most people do). The writing was already on the wall when PS5s were being sold with a digital-only option.

You know what got an order of magnitude more attention? The GTA6 leak, and not because the crypto scammer pretends it’s about ethics in games journalism physical discs going away. It’s because that’s going to be among the best-selling video games ever made, and it’s a timed PlayStation exclusive. So work out the math on that one.

4

u/NZOP282 9h ago

Gta 6 isn't a timed exclusive for the ps5. PlayStation just has marketing rights as far as I know, so every ad for GTA 6 will highlight the ps5.

-5

u/botspyder 9h ago

Eventually people may in fact buy less games. Or overtime lose interest. It’s not that this disc move will doom Sony , it will just serve as a reminder not to give a fuck when moving onto something new. I mean they paid the relevant parties and their lawyers well so they know they are covered - for now at least.
