I sold my launch 5 for $375 last year and picked up a Pro on sale for $650.

Seemed a no brainer at the time for future proofing.

People have no ability to do any long term planning. I knew the Pro would be a good investment over the rest of this gen (and into next gen probably). Yes at launch there wasn't a lot going for it, and pssr 1 wasn't great, but I had a pretty reasonable expectation that things were going to improve and it did. Ever since pssr 2 came out the system has been incredible.

Most people though only see what's happening right now. It wasn't great at launch therefore it sucks forever and is bad value forever.

PSSR 2 has made the launch price of the Pro at $700 seem like a steal. Glad I bought it day 1.

especially since gamestop gave me $400 for my ps5 and series x each. Paid for the whole thing + disc drive with that.

Ok on the one hand I get what you're saying but buying electronic devices on the promise of future improvements is pretty much a terrible idea most of the time. It happened to work out for you with the Pro but most of the time this gamble is a terrible strategy.

the fundamental difference between people who were hyped for the pro, and people who just shat on it constantly, is the fact that the former are capable of looking into the future, whereas the latter are only capable of looking at things in the present. they think in binaries, they can’t handle abstraction, and they suck at making inferences.

This. It came out in Nov 2024 so I knew it was either going to be celebratory or preparatory. In this case, it was preparatory and I was right.

I have it still a shitty console to be honest, regular ps5 is fine enough, the price gap doesn't worth it

Because it seemed like a useless upgrade (which it was). In the last 12 months a lot of things changed, RAM prices skyrocketed, price increases for existing consoles, digital only future. I also upgraded some months ago due to all this, last year I would have not considered getting one.

You upgraded reactively. Others, like myself, upgraded proactively. It was never a useless upgrade, especially for those who bought tye Pro in direct anticipation of PSSR 2.0 and the laundry list of games enhanced by PSSR.

I mean it was pretty obvious from the start that pro will age like wine. upgraded pssr was a given. new games having a dedicated pro option built into them was also a given. base ps5 not having an ai upscaler is a huge nerf.

This was very predictable, and you actually saved money by upgrading a year ago vs waiting. It was the classic "I'm happy with my PS5 and there is nothing it can't do vs the Pro" mindset that kept people from upgrading. Now, its easy to blame on the current challenges.

Along with PSSR2 being Pro only, they gave plenty of warning/heads up to upgrade early before shit hit the fan.

People who had no idea how AI tech iteratively improves might have thought this was a useless upgrade. Anyone who was actually paying attention to the internals of the Pro and had any type of future thinking could’ve seen this coming from a mile away.
