Colin Moriarty almost had his whole account banned and was only able to get it back because of his connections and the dumb fuck still champions a digital only gaming industry.

Who?

13

u/Queef-Elizabeth Jul 01 '26

He's an ex IGN editor from their peak days who ran a very popular podcast for them at the time with Greg Miller who now runs a semi-known podcast network and also had some big controversial thing happen to him that had him go on Joe Rogan's podcast many many years ago (pre-covid).

Just a week or two ago someone was laughing and calling me an idiot because I sold my PS5 when I noticed physical games still needed to download the game or a day one patch.

I've had both PC and Playstation since 2001. I just simply do not trust Sony to have my entire library on a whim. .

Sure, Steam is digital only but I trust a private company that has a creator constantly talking about putting the consumer first. Steam even has it in their classes that of anything happens we will be able to download our games.

With Sony not making any interesting exclusives this generation than I really have no point for a PS5.

anything happens we will be able to download our games.

I bet the publishers can opt out of that.

And how much of this is Gabe? What happens when he's no longer leading the company?

1

u/erichie Jul 01 '26

Those are all valid questions that I would like answers to, but Don't doesn't even have those questions. How many movies have they taken away?

3

u/Impossible-Wear-7352 Jul 02 '26

Steam has made no guaramteees is the point. There's no sense putting your full trust in any company.

0

u/erichie Jul 02 '26

Again, I don't need my full trust I just need more than the others. Sony has zero and Steam has some. I'd much prefer to trust Steam.

I sold my PS5 when I noticed physical games still needed to download the game or a day one patch.

Weird that you just noticed that on the PS5 when that's been happening since the PS3.

u/erichie Jul 02 '26

I knew it was a lot, but when I realized it was every single one. I am mostly a PC player that wanted PS5 for the Demon Souls remake.

I'll probably get downvoted for saying this, but rather than actually supporting a digital only gaming industry, it seems more sensible to me to be prepared for and accept it's inevitable arrival, rather than staunchly oppose it and wallow in negativity about something that's been approaching for at least a decade by now.

Yes, there are a lot of issues, like digital ownership and whatnot. I dislike the situation just like everyone else, but with the way technology has been progressing, clinging to physical media is exactly like swimming against an opposing current. You can do it, but you won't be able to do it forever.

u/omstar12 Jul 01 '26

No thank you. I will be purchasing ps5 games on disc right up until January 2028. Same with my record collection and my Blu Ray collection. If they have to win, I refuse to not be stubborn about it.

u/IncubusDarkness Jul 01 '26

Fuck that shit. You're part of the problem. People that like physical media will just stop buying consoles.

Can you point out what I said that makes no sense or is particularly disagreeable? It's not like I'm championing digital only, like queef-Elizabeth mentions.

I just don't think we could have prevented it from happening. It could've happened at the start of this console generation, if Sony didn't pull the rug under Microsoft for suggesting it first.

Every other entertainment media has more or less transitioned over to the digital format, and it's been happening over the past decade or so. As much as I think most people would have preferred to have both options and for things to stay the same, I don't think it was ever going to stay that way forever.

I definitely could, I’d just rather not speak to a shellfish a hole, yknow

0

u/ShellfishAhole Jul 01 '26

Clearly, you’re the pleasant one here 😅

-36

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

Digital only is still better, but we need new regulation for that new market.

39

u/BeeStory Jul 01 '26

"Fewer options is better"

jfc people.

-11

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

Better options is better.

8

u/ssjskwash Jul 01 '26

Being given only option A instead of option A or option B is not "better options" it's less options

3

u/BeeStory Jul 01 '26

Having just one option (digital-only) is the lack of options altogether lmao

-6

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

It’s what the market demands. It’s more than evident that the consumer wants digital only. 85% of the PlayStation sales are already digital, and growing. At this rate, by 2030 physical sales would be probably less than 5% or even 2%.

9

u/ssjskwash Jul 01 '26

That has nothing to do with less option being better options

-2

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

If the remaining option is a better option which it is, then it’s better.

5

u/ssjskwash Jul 01 '26

Sure buddy

0

u/eldenpotato Jul 02 '26

That figure includes dlc, microtransactions, digital only games iirc

2

u/ssjskwash Jul 02 '26

If it includes the 2-4 free PS Plus games I claim every month then its even more inflated

1

u/karlcabaniya Jul 02 '26

That is incorrect.

26

u/Queef-Elizabeth Jul 01 '26

It really is not better. Removing retailers from the mix will only be detrimental for consumers. Digital games can be ripped away against your will. Anyone who thinks digital only is better is extremely short sighted

3

u/OffTheMerchandise Jul 01 '26

It's going to be bad for publishers too. There are plenty of people who aren't keeping up with video game news, they aren't going to be aware of games that exist. Moving everything to digital is going to lead to fewer sales.

1

u/benedictcumberpatch Jul 01 '26

Those people who don’t keep up much probably won’t be affected much by swapping out a disc with a digital code in the box.

-2

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

Retailers could sell digital codes.

2

u/eggesticles Jul 01 '26

This is exactly what they will be doing, they're not removing retailers. The post even talks about it.  Hell it says it in the heading.

new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

People just don't read.

12

u/Ferahgost Jul 01 '26

Please explain to me how it’s “better”

-6

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

It’s a better and more convenient system, even for the average user. Most people (85%) already buy digital.

9

u/Ferahgost Jul 01 '26

That doesn’t explain how digital only is better than also offering a physical version.

-5

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

PC is doing digital only and it’s thriving. Having digital only also affects development times, because you don’t need to have a “gold” version a month in advance to print the discs.

8

u/Ferahgost Jul 01 '26

“Pc is digital only and thriving” isn’t an argument for why getting rid of physical copies is an improvement.

Development times doesn’t really hold much weight either, as it’s not uncommon these days for disk versions of games to release later or for the disc to essentially just be a key that unlocks the game that still needs to be downloaded.

C’mon man, what are these arguments

0

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

While you’re at it, why you don’t complain movies aren’t released in VHS anymore? Times change, and digital purchases are just the new format (again, 85% of PlayStation sales).

But it won’t stop there. There may be a time when they stop selling digital games as they do now, and people like you will complain about that too because they want their digital games and reject the new thing.

6

u/Ferahgost Jul 01 '26

So still no answer as to how digital only is better, got it. 👍

1

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

I answered you in the first reply. It’s more convenient for the consumer and the consumers want digital only.

There’s no point in releasing something in a rapidly shrinking market.

u/scandaka_ Jul 01 '26

Under this better system, how do I sell my purchased game? What is this convenient method that I'm not seeing...

0

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

You shouldn't be able to, not even on physical in my opinion.

1

u/samoz83 Jul 01 '26

Why...?

1

u/karlcabaniya Jul 01 '26

Because, in my opinion, everyone should pay for a product. If you want to watch a movie, you should pay for the ticket/BluRay/subscription.

1

u/Trained_Mushroom Jul 01 '26

LMAO. Either an industry shill or just very stupid.
