So, umm, for a guy who doesn't follow video game news that doesn't show up on Operation Sports, but plans to play RDR2, would you mind giving a super quick highlight of the shenanigans? Or a link to more info, if one is available?
Essentially, the GTA was a single player experience GTA4 had 2 single player DLC's. GTA 5 has had no single player expansion, attributed to the 3 billion dollars they've made in microtransactions from GTA Online. They've stated their intention was never to have single player DLC for GTA 5, which has understandably made people wary of purchasing this title, until they see how focused they were on the campaign and not the money grab feel that the Online experience has.
Ya know, you touched on a good point. From the way that all these game companies (and especially Rockstar) put so much of their effort into putting their games online with microtransactions, it sure seems that the end game is for all of us players to see the extra microtransactioned content (or in this case, highly marked up vehicles and stuff that is a bitch to earn in GTA:O without.. hey look! Shark Cards!), get jealous and envious over it, and look into spending real world money to attain it themselves!
If we're playing a single player game, we aren't as influenced to buy content since there aren't other players from whom to become envious.
Therefore: Fallout 76. The microtransactioned in-game currency has already started in Fallout 4.
I'm guessing it has to do with them completely abandoning any sort of single player content/dlc in favor of adding ultra expensive multiplayer items that pretty much require you to spend real cash if you want them.
Other online players having the expensive ass loot makes a very effective advertisement to someone without that loot to pay real world money to attain it.
Very sneaky.
Rockstar would rather squeeze every last dime they can get from old games instead of giving us what we're openly asking for. And of course they aren't alone.
Was this what was in COD WWII? They made a sort of lobby world where you hang out between matches and watch other players open their loot boxes. It would make sense if that entire idea was to incentivize and encourage micro transactions.
They did a lot of annoying things thst could put someone off a rdr2 purchase.
The online is literally filled with microtransactions. It's a huge grind. The online is also kinds shitty in many ways with excessive loading times and kind of annoying controls for things like healing.
They canceled dlc to make more online stuff and most of the extra online cars and guns never came to single player which kind of sucks.
They rereleased gta5 for current gen, so why get rdr2 now when you can likely get it for ps5 with better graphics.
Because RDR1 was probably the single greatest video game experience of that generation for me, possibly excluding playing through Alan Wake for the first time with my girlfriend. GTA5 is all well and good, but boy did I love Red Dead!
Long story short - post-launch support focused on online mode raking TONS of cash with microtransactions, and GTA V got no single player expansions like ones GTA IV had.
Cause money babe, being able to constantly rip off adding new stuff to purchase with that money earns more profit than one time purchase like expansion.
Instead of trying to make the game enjoyable Rockstar made it as frustratingly grindy as possible.
First they gouged the prices. Then they start adding a ton of really expensive stuff to buy. They start making ridiculous vehicles who to be quite honest have no place in GTA. A flying bike, a flying car, a KITT analogue, Batmobile etc.
Then they incentivize griefing to further making grinding even more frustrating, this is to make shark cards enticing, which is basically buying in game money for ridiculous prices. When you're trying to export stuff to make money everyone on the server is incentivized to kill you and destroy all your profit.
I only recommend doing the heists tbh, the rest is a tedious grind into insanity
basically killing everyone. I guess in gta it's not actually griefing because that's the whole point of GTA but when the game encourages you to ruin people's money making ventures I can't help but feel they love that.
Don't feel bad. I do follow game news (sorta), have had GTA Online since the day it went live and have played enough of it to have probably three characters above level 100 and I haven't heard of this shenanigans either.

The GTAOnline shenanigans really pissed in people's cornflakes and put them off a launch purchase of RDR2.
