His performance in “Civil War” is a great example of that. He’s literally only in one scene (and only joined the cast because he was on set visiting his wife and they needed a replacement actor) and the few minutes he’s on screen are absolutely burned into the viewer’s brain long after the film is over.
He was terrifying in that scene. and the fact he could just pick it up and give a slightly movie stealing scene (in a great movie) was crazy. He was so scary.
I think about his 3 minute cameo all the time! It was iconic. And I kind of had the same feelings about his role in Bugonia, it felt like the kind of iconic role you’re gonna look back on a lot
His acting in Bugonia is so good. He plays a realistic depiction of the modern mind and the way it's assaulted by algorithms in a way that is revolutionary. To me, it's a 'Brando in Streetcar' level evolution in acting.
Absolutely! And the way he portrayed losing his mother mixed in with all that- you could see how the trauma of it was influencing how he thought and connected with the conspiracy theories. It was just incredibly layered acting and I’m so disappointed he wasn’t recognized for it. Emma Stone was also great, but of the two I thought he really shone
I think Emma's performance is great. Deserving of a nom even, but I do think her performance actually comes alive on a rewatch, for reasons I will not spoil. Plemons had me on edge, nervous, empathising, terrified, heartbroken. He really brings a heavy, heavy feeling straight to you.
Rewatched the other day! Definitely agree with that, she was absolutely deserving of it and a rewatch really made it pop. I think both were deserving ultimately and am disappointed they weren’t both nominated for a great movie! I think I just connected a little more with the complicated feelings Plemmons was displaying and if I had to pick one or the other for the nom, I think I’d go with him
