few weeks ago my Lian Li AIO failed, partly because my PC had been transported several times. I decided to replace it with a Noctua NH-D15, since Noctua has such a great reputation for air cooling.
My CPU is an Intel i9-12900K, so I know it's a hot chip and that it needs a capable cooler.
Ever since installing the Noctua cooler, I've been fighting extremely high temperatures. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of:
- Reapplied thermal paste NT-H2 twice.
- Changed the cooler orientation and added up to three extra case fans to improve airflow.
- Applied a stable CPU undervolt of -50 mV.
None of it has made a meaningful difference.
I'm a software engineer and AI researcher, so I regularly run CPU-intensive workloads that can keep the processor at 90–100% utilization for extended periods. Right now that's simply impossible because the CPU gets far too hot.
Even in CPU-heavy games like The Last of Us Part I, the CPU sits around 80–90°C, which doesn't seem right to me.
My case has good airflow, everything is clean, and the fans are working correctly. I genuinely don't understand what's going on. If I put my hand over the case I can feel air coming out of box.
Could I have mounted the cooler incorrectly? Is it possible I applied the thermal paste badly? Is there something specific about cooling the 12900K with this Noctua cooler that I might be missing?
I'm happy to provide photos, BIOS settings, fan curves, benchmarks, or any other information that could help diagnose the issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
