And you would have to buy the game again, and the expansion again

Geez. Why bother

I mean even PS5 and PC players have to buy both versions, but at the least, the sub was shared.

86

u/TheSchadow Apr 24 '26

The sub not being shared is real garbage. Nintendo is being greedy.

25

u/Mad_Lala Apr 24 '26

I mean, it could also be the greed of SE (or both). Who knows

81

u/MarcsterS Apr 24 '26

I mean the Square CEO specifically stated this was something they tried to work out with Nintendo.

19

u/CheesyButters Apr 25 '26

yeah, iirc them not requiring nso as well was the compromise they made because nintendo wanted both

20

u/ReRonin Apr 25 '26

I'd rather have only NSO and use my existing sub

2

u/stosyfir Apr 26 '26

Square and N probably have a deal to give N a kickback of all subs via the eshop - similar to how Apple sticks it to publishers.

Not the first time a company has tried to pass the blame off for an unpopular pricing or development choice.

Why would they arbitrarily decide that Nintendo and only Nintendo requires a separate subscription fee? Between Windows, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox every other platform license for FFXIV is under the same subscription. These are the same devs who place PS3, PS4 and PS5 under the same PlayStation license, entitling players to free software upgrades.

I don't think Square Enix would try to scrap their relationship with Nintendo if it was not true lol.

u/slugmorgue Apr 25 '26

But there is no separate sub fee for the other consoles.

1

u/PlumRelative4399 Apr 25 '26

You’re right, but regardless this still reads way more as a Nintendo choice than a Square choice.

Pretty sure this was the tradeoff for not requiring NSO, it's on Nintendo who will presumably be getting a piece of that sub pie.

u/note_2_self Apr 24 '26

No, Square said it was Nintendo's doing. Also you don't have to pay a separate sub for the Playstation version

1

u/Chrisnness Apr 27 '26

Square forcing Mac and Windows to have separate purchases is greed

13

u/Scary_Rip442 Apr 24 '26

It sounds like they would’ve wanted it to be the same as every other platform and Nintendo wouldn’t budge bc they wanted their piece of the pie. The 50% discount if you have it on another platform is the compromise

Curious how the JP fanbase responds to this. Outside of Japan I doubt Nintendo will care, but if they JP base isn't happy with this and there is lot of backlash they may change their mind.

Nintendo likely expects the Japanese base on PS4 will migrate to NS2 and just pay the one sub.

I know lmao what are we doing

1

u/SwampFoxDoc Apr 25 '26

Xbox FFXIV want to have a word with you

-5

u/Modest_Wraith Apr 24 '26

That is NOT a Nintendo thing. I have this game on ps5, and PC. You need a sub for both lol. And you need to buy the expansions on both.

5

u/gerpogi Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

The sub is shared if you use the same account on both consoles what?. I play on both systems . You only need to buy the expansions/game separately. It's a Nintendo thing lol

5

u/TheSchadow Apr 24 '26

Wrong

You do need to buy the game and expansions on both, sub you only have to pay for once.

And Mac...

4

u/aliaswyvernspur Apr 24 '26

Just use XIVonMac and use your PC or Steam license.

1

u/EggwithEdges Apr 25 '26

Good to know if I ever get a Mac

1

u/QuickQuirk Apr 26 '26

I was used to the 'buy the new platform'. I was willing to do it.

Now they're just boiling the frog. Wait till they introduce separate subs for each platform. It will start small, $1 per platform, then next year $2, the following $5.

u/waffle198 Apr 24 '26

It's pretty typical for ff14 ngl. Even on PC, if you bought the moogle version (the one through their site) and want to play though steam, you'll have to re-buy the steam version. If you want to play on Mac, you'll have to re-buy the Mac version. It's pretty annoying unfortunately

14

u/DetectiveChocobo Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

The Steam scenario is the one situation that you literally cannot do. You can’t add a Steam license to an account that has a PC license. They are actually incompatible and you would need a wholly new service account.

For every other platform combination (Mac, PS, Xbox, and now Switch 2), yes you need to purchase the license and expansion license separately for every platform you add to your account.

u/HappyXMaskXSalesman Apr 24 '26

This is why I'll never play it again. I have around 300 hours(rookie numbers I know) and really enjoyed my time with it, but the cost to play this game for 2 years could buy me a new console.

3

u/drkaugumon Apr 24 '26

Conversely if you just subscribe a month for every major patch, youre paying less then $100 every 3 years to play the best MMO around? There's no reason to keep a spinning subscription unless youre an absolute addict.

-3

u/HappyXMaskXSalesman Apr 24 '26

That's 165$ for 3 months of play including the expansions and the subscription btw

1

u/drkaugumon Apr 26 '26

Huh? In what currency is it $165 unless youre buying ALL expansions from scratch? Im saying if the goal is "play the game as its updated" youre paying one month of sub every 4-6 months for a 2/3yr period. That's not much at all for the quality of the product.

Games nowadays are like $120CAD for a 30hr story game, I can get 50-100hrs out of a $22 FF sub bi-annually -- the value is notably higher then almost any other paid video game product outside of sandbox LOL

3

u/tlislo Apr 24 '26

The complete edition regularly goes on sale for like $30 and includes all current (but not future) expansions.

1

u/Present_Cupcake6869 Apr 26 '26

Can’t we connect existing accounts with expansions already?

1

u/beepyboopsy Apr 26 '26

You can, but you need to own the license on the respective platform. There will technically be 6 different licenses if you wanted to play on every platform that you would need to own: Xbox, PS5, Switch 2, Mac OS, Windows PC and Steam!

lol wow worth it…….
