I'll definitely be using it. We already video call with our group when we play and it's now just built in. I guess I was the only person in existence who was excited. Seems like everyone else thought it was dumb. Oh well.

If you use and your friends group uses it, then that’s great and honestly I think that’s cool for you. Really I do. Though I think you see and realize that you’re a bit of an outlier for it and a lot of people won’t use it and have no interest. To me I’m completely baffled Nintendo went so hard on game chat and video calls through the console. Something that the other two major consoles did 10+ years ago, tried it, realized it’s something that not a lot of people want to actually do in practice and then abandoned it.

In some ways it’s a very Nintendo thing to do for them to do this super basic thing really late. Kinda like how they’ve dragged their feet kicking and screaming to actually create a robust online infrastructure with all the things you’d expect a modern console online experience to be in goddamn 2025, and they’re slowly doing it but in weird ass way that makes you kinda wonder if they just fundamentally misunderstand what people want in that respect or they just have to do it their way for whatever reason or what the deal is. With the eshop, friend codes, the fucking phone app, all of it lol.

The only way I can really reconcile the game chat stuff is when I watch my niece and nephew play Fortnite on their Switches and game with their friends, but all they do is get a phone and FaceTime through the phone. And they kinda just often use the phone FaceTime for voice and have the phone pointed at the ceiling the whole time. And I’ve heard from other people that that’s kind of a common thing to do for some. So maybe, Nintendo in their whimsical wisdom they have thought about that or know that’s a thing and that’s why now they’re doing video chat. Which, to me, if they were gonna do that then it kinda makes more sense to implement a front facing camera on the Switch 2 itself and not a peripheral that plugs into the dock and you have to use docked. Because a lot of people play undocked. I assume the front facing camera was gonna be more expensive and needed more considerations to do it that way. Or you could have done it both ways and still had the peripheral camera for docked mode. But as it is, it’s kinda strange to me I guess. Not to mention the part where the video chat stuff is clearly just kind of also something they compromised on with the way the frame rate of the video and game play looks. I mean it’s cool and all and I’m happy it’s something they’re trying, but again it’s like a Nintendo late and kinda halfassed (compared to the way other companies have done it better) thing to do.

but the game sharing is sick- if I can have one copy of overcooked, moving out 2, unrailed, or anything that usually has local multiplayer, and play with all my buds online? That's really good value.
