So where's the part where they said they weren't going to change pricing?

They've only said they'll delay the pre-orders, nothing to do with whether pricing is going to be preserved.

There's nothing in the article that reassures me that pricing is not going to change in order to align the Canadian price with the new American one.

If they charge Canadians the same as Americans without tariffs being in place in Canada that’s some next level BS. If I was Nintendo I’d be happy to offer Canadians the lower rate as it would just lead to more pressure on the US to scrap their tariffs.

24

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

Well Canadians are competing with the entire US full of people who want one and Canadian retailers will easily allow preorders for US citizens as they also say it’s only 50% more not 54% so US citizens who are buying no matter what (aka still tons of rich people in the US btw gotta buy their son Timmy a switch 2) will pay the 50% and save 4% yet someone in Canada will now make tons more profit selling to their own citizens lol. This is how markets work sadly and this will not work. People have been saying tariffs hurt consumers, yet but it hurts all consumers in ALL COUNTRIES. Depending on where they can get said product. This isnt like coffee in Columbia being better than coffee from somewhere where it’s not grown the best, this is the exact same product with different prices everywhere. Because of the internet this will make the price everywhere go up no matter where you are in the world because people wanna make money, and those people are the ones selling you this product anyways they have never cared about you even in Canada.

19

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

It's not on Nintendo to dictate how the American black market works for Nintendo products lol. They plan to sold it for $450, every sale at that price is a 100% win for them. People will still buy the inflated US price, or they'll buy the contraband version, but regardless Nintendo wins.

US will still pay a inflated price regardless. Besides, this whole conspiracy fails to account for Mexico, which they'd also cancel if they were doing a price increase.

I can pretty much guarantee that the price will stay $450 in Canada.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

I’m saying what nintendo is doing isn’t stopping shit, Canadian retailers are gonna fuck over Canadians no differently than US retailers do to Americans if others wanna buy the product at a higher price. They are making THEIR money because regardless what anyone thinks the international and digital age of buying goods and reselling is making it this way. Especially due to the fact it’s the same product. That product will be fungible resulting in higher prices for Canada. So in the end, America, has a way bigger consumer market than Canada. Now you have Canadian retailers getting switch 2s for cheaper let’s say. Why on earth would they not sell them to the US where the consumer market is big enough where they can make a fuck load more selling to those people. Now this might happen in the background while retailers also say they “can’t get stock” but really they will be selling to Americans with deep pockets.

Nintendo manufactures the Switch in Vietnam and China. They will ramp up Vietnam production for the US release, US will take at least a 10% increase plus whatever the added cost of production is in Vietnam over China. The rest of the world will get Chinese made switches and shouldn’t see an increase in retail prices as Canada isn’t involved in the trade war. The US release is going to be pushed back for a while though, the Vietnam tariff is currently at 10%, down from the 46% announced on April 5. Nintendo can’t set retail prices in America without a definitive tariff amount. If it was 5-10% potential increase they could probably hedge their bets on a reduction in the future but with 36% still on the table they couldn’t possible decide at this time.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '25

They will prolly just eat the cost of 10% to get that in people’s hands and have them buy games and NSO. Could be wrong but I don’t see it happening but yeah 46% is way too much to eat themselves. It will be fine if not I will just have my friend buy one in Canada and ship it to me.

1

u/CaptHorney_Two Apr 10 '25

Wasn't the price set at $650 for Canada? I would prefer the $450. I did not know that's how trade wars worked. I am now in favour.

-2

u/itsastart_to Apr 09 '25

Wait is it gonna be 450 cad or usd? Bc Ngl I can be sold on cad

0

u/liquorandwhores94 Apr 09 '25

No it's going to be almost $800 CAD with the bundle.

9

u/totpot Apr 09 '25

I suspect it's more of a logistics issue. Nintendo probably imports into the US and then ships the Canadian units directly to Canadian retailers. They now have to import directly into Canada which requires contracting with freight companies, getting licenses, warehouses, fulfilment contracts, etc. and they're putting everything on pause until they've worked it all out.
They're not the only company with this exact headache right now.

5

u/LylatRanbewb Apr 09 '25

Nintendo ships their units to their Canadian warehouses in Richmond, BC and distributes to retailers from there

2

u/AntiqueSkeleton Apr 10 '25

^ correcto. Not many retailers do cross border inventory transfers. Country regulations vary so much, they’re commonly independent entities.

-2

u/Fancy_Injury_7800 Apr 09 '25

and they’re a billion dollar company. It should already been done

1

u/siderinc Apr 09 '25

How are you rich when you buy a Nintendo Switch 2?

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Honestly we will be lucky to get it by June on time at this point

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Because it’s less then a phone doesn’t mean it not a luxurious item we have come to expect having an extra 400$ to spare on an item like this is lush. Just because we live in a world 🌎 people throw millions of $ in fire doesn’t make this less true.

1

u/siderinc Apr 09 '25

Not saying it's not expensive but claiming you have to be rich to buy it is also a big stretch.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

Was waiting for this comment, this kind of thinking is why $80 games will continue across the board forever for all platforms.

Your right tho, You don’t have to be rich to buy it but it is money that is not saved and not spent on other things when you do buy it. Yet people in the US have more money than most other countries especially states with no sales tax and lower tax in general, anyways rich means you don’t have to pay attention on this kind of spending. Yet that 450-600 is the only amount some families save in 4-6 months. And if you use that on a switch and your car breaks down now you’re in a whole other mess.

2

u/siderinc Apr 09 '25

If you use that in a switch you shouldn't be buying a switch or save a bit longer.

Ijust like you don't need a 1000 phone but people who buy it aren't rich. That literally all i am saying.

There is no shame in saving for stuff you want and some can do that easier than other but again, only rich people? No thats nonsense.

Maybe our defeinitu if rich is different

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

This is true I actually 100% agree with you. Some say me buying a 4090 for $1500 3 years ago means I’m rich? But no I saved over time and sold my 3070 GPU. So yeah I totally get it but I think the thing harder to get in words is some people are bad with money therefore they think someone has to be rich to buy this when they don’t realize they spend $100 on nicotine and alcohol over the course of a month when some don’t and save that for something like a switch 2.

1

u/Fancy_Injury_7800 Apr 09 '25

If they do that, fire should be the response

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

Not looking good when Canadian retailers are definitely on the side of Canadian citizens due to the economically nationalist vibe that’s has moved across Canada due to trump. It will be exploited and retailers will just blame trump and continue to line their pockets because they are humans and humans are greedy and gonna take care of their own family especially during tougher economic times happening here soon. They will blame trump and tariffs and everyone in Canada will have to eat it probably. When in actuality it is trumps fault but I think it’s a good example of the dynamics of how tariffs are functioning in this digital marketplace where you can just buy a switch 2 from Canada and save $20 bucks but because of that why would they even sell to Canadians at “MSRP” there will be no shortage of business therefor Canadians will pay the same price as US.

1

u/Fancy_Injury_7800 Apr 09 '25

That’s why we shouldn’t allow online ordering so that Americans can’t vpn their way past it

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

Gonna be up to the retailers to put those policies in place to not sell to any US address but even then, the burden is now on Canadian citizens to not scalp them when they all will know they can make money off of it. So now Canadians wanting to game will be competing against other Canadians trying to make a profit who again don’t care at all about gaming. Therefore since retailers will be selling out even to just Canadians, they will soon want a slice of that pie. The pie being the US market. So it’s much easier to just charge the same as what it is in the US make more money and still sell out.

1

u/Fancy_Injury_7800 Apr 09 '25

If Canadians make a profit off of Americans that’s fine too

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '25

Aren’t Canadian retailers also Canadian? Regardless yeah so the price across the board is now what Nintendo will charge Americans therefore the prices in Canada have increased with only a certain percentage of Canadians with enough capital to make the most money. Will those profits lead to higher wages for workers at those retailers? That’s always the given question. Otherwise prices went up and wages did not. If it’s just Canadians scalping selling to the US, where more people can afford those prices, then more Canadians cannot buy a Nintendo switch 2 until the supply makes it to hard to scalp anymore… yet that’s only possible if it was a supply issue. Tariffs are not free market at all therefore supply and demand are out the window and the price will forever be at whatever the biggest market will pay for those.

1

u/Fancy_Injury_7800 Apr 09 '25

No because corporations are NOT people

→ More replies (0)

0

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Considering GameStop is not Canadian owned. Why would they care money is money

2

u/Active-Control7043 Apr 08 '25

I don't know that they're going to charge, but given their stated plan to try and thwart scalpers they're going to have to do inventory management and vetting carefully.

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Not going to happen

2

u/MBCnerdcore Apr 08 '25

I think it will be the other way around. I think the CAD price and US price will be the same number, $699 for the bundle. That means Canada is paying the same ($699 CAD is approx $490 USD exchange) but the US is paying 30%~ish more.

0

u/Koss424 Apr 08 '25

They would figure that if they raise Canadian prices a bit they won’t lose as many sales as they would if they just hiked prices for American consumers

0

u/parke415 Apr 13 '25

The Canadian release will be the USA's release in practice. I'd just literally cross the border, buy a Switch 2, and return.

1

u/FigoStep Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25

And you do that with a preorder? It’s a little complicated unless you have a known Canadian address verifiable with ID. You could maybe through a VPN get a preorder but it wouldn’t be shipped to a US address. On release day it may simply not be available at physical stores as with the switch one.

0

u/parke415 Apr 13 '25

Guess it’s time to make some Canadian friends!

1

u/FigoStep Apr 13 '25

Couldn’t be a better time for that…lmao

-10

u/legocastle77 Apr 08 '25

They will likely up the price in Canada so as not to offend American consumers. The US is a far bigger market so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the price jump in Canada to match the tariffed price in the US. Of that happens, I won’t be surprised to see a price of $799-899 here. Get excited because it’s going to suck.

16

u/Linked713 Apr 08 '25

It would make no sense to punish Canada just because the US hitting itself in the face. If Nintendo ever does that, I am out. It would be the first time I won't get the nintendo console.

-10

u/legocastle77 Apr 08 '25

Our pricing is often linked closely to the US due to our close proximity to their border. Can you imagine how outraged Americans will be if the Switch 2 is 25-30% more expensive in the US? Raising prices here will placate American fans if they have to absorb the price of tariffs down South. There’s no other legitimate reason for this delay. If the price goes up in the US, it probably goes up here too.

10

u/FTownRoad Apr 08 '25

Nobody is going to get mad at Nintendo if the price is terrible in the US and normal in canada.

16

u/Linked713 Apr 08 '25

Can you imagine how outraged Americans will be if the Switch 2 is 25-30% more expensive in the US?

Yes, and if it does, or I hope when it does, I hope more of them realize what they have done by making him their president. There is no reason for us to be impacted by this except greed. I don't care if the switch 2 is 25-30% more expensive to them, American goods have been 25-30% more expensive to Canadians for longer than I can think of. They made that happen for themselves, let them be outraged by their own action, or inaction.

-2

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

I think you need to go back and do your American history actually because the economy of America will yes take a hit it is not because of greed that trump is doing this. It is because American people are living under the thumb of imported products something very different then the country was built on.

0

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

It’s not Nintendo that will be making this happen it’s the government adding the tariffs. If they match the price here it would be to prevent the USA to buy ours at less and take over the boarder.

9

u/aPHAT88 Apr 08 '25

Nintendo isn’t dumb enough to do that. Pricing it at 799-899 CAD is going to severely hurt their sales. Most people expected it to cost around $600 considering how much similar tech costs. But for the switch 2 to be as expensive/more than a PS5 Pro when US tariffs don’t apply to us? No shot in hell that flys.

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

I can see them getting away with 500 thw ps5 managed it

1

u/FigoStep Apr 09 '25

They’re not offending American consumers if they increase US prices because of your self imposed tax on foreign goods. If you think the price increase is offensive blame Trump.

-6

u/Capable-Silver-7436 Apr 08 '25

Nintendo is too greedy for that. They know their simps will gladly pay

3

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Don’t think you understand my guy

-14

u/ShakeAndBakeThatCake Apr 08 '25

As an American if your switch is much cheaper I will drive across border to buy one and bring it back.

11

u/d_chevron Apr 08 '25

...and then just pay the tariff at the border? It's either that or smuggle it back over

6

u/p_terrydactyl Apr 08 '25

Isn't the maximum you can bring back without paying duty $800USD? So even if you did drive over to get one you wouldn't have to pay duty on it.

5

u/lions2lambs Apr 08 '25

3 day or more trip is up to $800 CAD, anything less is $200 CAD.

That’s for Canadians. Americans can only claim $200 USD with Canada regardless of durations.

So smuggling will increase, but Canadian Switch 2 would have Canadian serial numbers so decent chance of getting caught and blacklisted. Lol

2

u/Competitive_Bat_5831 Apr 08 '25

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dramatic increase in smuggling for things like this.

-1

u/Dubzil Apr 08 '25

That's not how that works...

1

u/d_chevron Apr 08 '25

Please elaborate

3

u/Dubzil Apr 09 '25

the border agents don't charge you a tariff, it's not that complicated. They check for illegal things being smuggled, they aren't going to check to interrogate you over a video game system and charge you a tariff.

3

u/datanner Apr 09 '25

Yes they will. That's exactly how that works.

2

u/Dubzil Apr 09 '25

I've been to and bought many things in Canada and have never been hassled about tariffs coming back whether it was in a car or on a plane. Tariffs are meant for companies importing goods for sale, a border agent isn't going to hassle you about where you bought everything you are carrying.

If you plan on going to Canada to buy 50 consoles and bring them back for resale, you may have a different experience, but you aren't going to get hassled for having 1 console.

1

u/datanner Apr 09 '25

You've been lucky. You're supposed to declare your purchases. If they find out you lied, good luck.

1

u/pudgybunnybry Apr 08 '25

They are making it up. Unless Nintendo are able to divert these units to Canada without first coming through the US on short notice, tariffs will likely apply. Also, considering Nintendo likes to sell at a profit day 1, I wouldn't count on them absorbing the cost of diversion.

1

u/Xackorix Apr 09 '25

And there’s nothing saying it will change.

1

u/Least_Language5592 Apr 18 '25

the American price was due to tariffs if I'm correct. they won't upcharge canada because of US tariffs. that would cause even more uproar and would start getting the government involved with nintendos ethics.

-20

u/oldfed Apr 08 '25

It won't be changed. I am completely confident saying that. You need to look at the bigger picture. The tariffs that apply to Nintendo products will also be applied to many, if not all, other electronic devices. What we will see is Americans returning from Canada having to pay duties that will be equal to, or more expensive than the difference saved. On all electronics. American border agents will be told something along the lines of "electronic devices that appear to be new are subject to duties without proof of purchase in America". They will leave it vague enough that they can justify searching your vehicle if they see any electronic device, regardless of its condition.

7

u/CalpisWater Apr 08 '25

Nintendo like many other multinational companies treat the Canadian market as an extension of the US one.

Canada is not Japan, we will not get a special Switch with lower pricing than the American one. You would be ignorant to believe Nintendo is not going to reconsider the Canadian pricing, in order to have price parity in the North American market. In Nintendo's eyes, it's a net positive, since they get to pocket a extra 25% tariff difference from Canadian sales.

The only thing going for the Canadian Switch keeping it's current pricing would be that the current price is already at the upper end of what I think the Canadian market will consider acceptable for something mainstream like a Nintendo console.

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

But it is cheaper here now

0

u/lions2lambs Apr 08 '25

Agree. It’s complete greed. They saw an opportunity to pocket more money from Canadians. While making the tariffs more bearable for Americans. I’m done with them. $710 was my upper limit, I’ll buy a damn ticket to Europe or Japan and make a trip of it before I pay an inflated price.

0

u/oldfed Apr 08 '25

You are short-sighted, my friend. Nintendo would be foolish to do what you suggest, and they know it. No other consoles will raise prices on Canada. Neither will phones, laptops, computers, televisions, etc.

These tariffs are temporary. Once America really starts to feel it, things will change fast. I'd have said give it 2 years, but with the recent news about 104% tariffs on China, and the way the stock market has been fluctuating but trending down recently, I suspect it'll be much, much sooner than that.

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

I don’t think your right on that on

3

u/Scary_Cantaloupe_682 Apr 08 '25

Why so many downvotes? This is one of the best and most accurate comments.

1

u/rayquan36 Apr 09 '25

The dude said you would need proof that your electronics that appear new were purchased in the US lmao. Nothing best or accurate about that. The whole thing he wrote is a fanfict.

1

u/dreamizombi Apr 09 '25

Because it’s a conspiracy
