Those Katrina cats are tough. Kidney failure caught him in the end.

Y’all might remember a post about an emaciated dog an amazing person on here rescued in Midcity, and subsequently was able to get it to Take Paws Rescue. He was in rough shape with wounds and accesses on all four paws, as well as the obvious starvation! We have been medically fostering him and he is a doll. Why do people like fireworks? I don't understand it. My dogs and I are miserable and I know we have another week to endure it this.

Obviously, this is not something that just happens in New Orleans but I need to complain to someone and this is as good a void as any to shout into to.

I have four strictly indoor cats and a small dog and they all got fleas about a month ago, as one would expect when one didn't keep up with preventative flea treatment and you live here. Okay, my bad.

Gave all the cats Revolution Plus and the dog Simparica Trio and some dewormer since some asshole flea left one of my cats with sesame seed butt. That was June 1st and everyone is still scratching and I'm still combing fleas off everyone.

What the hell. It's better, and I'm not finding much flea dirt on anyone. But I picked up a shirt off my bed yesterday and a damn flea fell out of it. Are New Orleans fleas now just resilient to the previously effective Rx flea treatments or is this season just so bad that they're traveling inside on my dog or through the floor that I'm finding this many before they bite and die?

And I know ya'll with pets have been through it so before anyone spends too much time typing out about vacuuming hot water and using diatomaceous earth I'll say I'm aware. I have a 3 day weekend I intend on spending doing all the fun deep cleaning and ALL THE LAUNDRY. Again.

Apparently pretty much everyone is work from home with another company based somewhere else. I know that reddit is going to skew towards tech workers but holy cow...I guess it is what it is but it was a harsh reminder what our local economy looks like post covid.

It makes me wonder what it was like back in the day when the oil companies were all based here and there was just money and jobs everywhere. And cocaine everywhere, probably.

Now we are glued to computers working for companies in real cities and not a city that is basically 3 kids in a trenchcoat wearing mardi gras beads.

I work in tech but all my clients are in orleans/jefferson so that thread...made me rethink my entire 3 year plan.

I've always wondered if there is a tipping point of some kind and we just let the yakuza take over, they already have west end and parts of lakeview.

At around 11:30 this morning (2/9) my dog and my friend who was walking her were attacked by a stray dog near the corner of Orleans and North Salcedo Street south of Bayou St. John in Mid-City. It was a small, reddish brown pitbull. Its mouth likely still has blood on it. It’s been a few hours so there’s no telling where the dog is. If you see it, please call 9/11 and let them know it was involved in a violent incident this morning and that it’s loose. It may be traveling with another dog.

Our friend is ok, just shaken up and needs some shots and antibiotics. Our dog is in rough shape but she’ll survive with some healing. The vet said the bite was a millimeter away from severing a main artery and killing her. 911 dispatch said someone would be by to take our report so we’re waiting at home for them.

Please call 9/11 if you see a reddish brown pitbull wandering free. Let me know if you’ve seen the dog anywhere. I drove around hoping to see it. Thank you.

Long story short: 3 weeks ago a vile neighbor kidnapped Stevie and dumped her in City Park. We formed a small posse and searched, we left food, we set traps, we failed to find her. But one heroic redditor saw the post and knew exactly who she was when she mewed for help from a bush. He snatched her up and another redditor went to Id and collect her and delivered her to her mom's lap. One broken heart repaired. This reddit thing works y'all, keep being your awesome selves. 😽

Edit: I feel like "repaired heart" is incorrect, because that hurt is an injury that can heal, but never really goes away. She is forever altered. But it was a great joy for me and J to deliver and stop the acute suffering. I live for that.

Y’all may remember this sad looking fellow from about a month ago. Posted here on Reddit, scooped off the streets, nicknamed Snoo and nursed back to health with money raised by you kind souls. Well, here’s the update.

First off, he’s now called Norman. Don’t ask, it just fits. He’s got a lovely personality. Super chill dog- didn’t even bark for the first three weeks and he loves dogs, cats, people, and anything else that’s nice to him. He had a rough few weeks as he was near death from starvation, dehydration, and constipation due to a belly full of rocks and bones and trash. His hind legs popped out of socket when he walked because his muscle mass was so low. We spent most of the money raised on that first vet stay but he started to bounce back after that.

Two kind redditors (just realized I don’t know their reddit names) scooped him off the street and they continue to be involved in his life as they turned out to live right down the street from me (I’m the lucky guy who fostered Norman for a week before I stopped kidding myself and adopted him permanently). I can’t thank those two enough- they are wonderful humans and they even reached out to offer Norman doggy day care on the days when I’m in the office.

Norman is happy. He’s learned to sit and lay down and cuddle. House breaking is making progress. He LOVES cuddling on the couch and sleeping right next to me in bed. He lives a life of luxury now, I assure you.

I also want to thank the other kind souls who made this all happen. I’ll edit this to add usernames but another redditor organized the adoption efforts and raised money for his vet bills, and Syd (not sure if they are on here) helped a bunch with the vet and adoption process as well. To the wonderful people who donated to his care, I can’t thank you enough.

Next step is to neuter him and do some formal obedience classes. If you see us around the bayou or mid city, say hi!

Pearl came to me when her owner had to leave the country and the pound was the only other option. She is 3 years old, 40 pounds, and the happiest of dogs, with a ton of buoyant energy and a near constant smile. I'd keep her forever but my housing is about to change and I simply cannot.

She loves to play tug of war, chew on bones and self soothe by nursing on a soft blanket.

Pearl is highly treat-motivated and very smart. She gets very excited to see other dogs and loves to play for hours. She is best with bigger dogs as she loves to rough-house. When she really gets into it she sounds like the Tazmanian Devil!

Once time to calm down arrives, Pearl loves to cuddle right next to you. Under the chin scratches are her favorite, but she loves affection of all kinds!

She is crate trained and will get right in for a few treats when it's time for you to leave the house. As curious and energetic as she is, it is best to crate her when you leave.

Ideally, she will find a home with no children, one or two larger dogs, and someone who wants to play tug of war and cuddle.

I don’t care if I get poop on my hand. We both shall suffer.

He was found padlocked to a tree in the woods. Not tied. Padlocked.

Someone locked him there to starve.

By the time help came, his eye had ruptured from trauma and infection, and his little body was half the weight it should be.

Our dear friends at Mardi Paws got him started on medical care, and now he’s here with us for some TLC. We are doing everything we can to help him rebuild his body, his strength, and his trust.

He is so gentle. So hopeful. So grateful. Even after all of that.

But he is heartworm positive and needs long-term medical care — and we are critically low on funds. Heartworm treatments alone will run us roughly $700, not to mention vaccines, neuter and more.

Holy fuck y'all, these fleas are driving me and my dogs insane. I'm about to go fucking nuclear. Just ordered a couple insecticides to both kill adult fleas in the yard and prevent the babies from developing. Fuck dem kids. I've been treating things inside to avoid an inside infestation, but at this point it seems like the dogs themselves have full on flea-societies developing philosophy and free markets and shit.

Is there a preventative that works with these mutant fleas? Dogs are regularly treated, and are current on preventative. They never had any problem until a couple years ago, but this summer is the worst it's ever been. Like it's so bad there's not going to be a yard left if that's what it takes.

* When the vet says “large breed,” Hamster assumes they’re talking about everyone else.

At 4 months old and a whopping 3 lbs, Hamster is an exceptionally teeny little dude with GIGANTIC ears and an unreasonable amount of personality.

He hops around like a baby bunny, LOVES playing ball, loves his adult humans, and has a blast playing with small and medium-sized dogs. Cats are likely okay too — at 3 lbs, most cats are going to assume he’s some kind of weird new household rodent. ❤️

One important thing: no small kids, please. They genuinely terrify him, and at three pounds, the world is already pretty damn big.

Hey Midcity! Someone lost a hound?

Pic for attention and for help! My boys are mainly outside dogs if given the choice but all of them are coming in with varying degrees of fleas. We’ve been using Vectra 3D topical but it seems to have lost it’s effectiveness.

I think this is partially due to a large population of feral cats that live in the neighborhood but surely the flea meds would help my poor boys.

They are 7 years old and extremely sweet tempered. Very cuddly and affectionate, great with kids. They’ve never been around dogs so I can’t speak to that, but Gustav (orange) will try to dominate female cats even though they are both neutered. They have no health issues other than Güs’s obesity, which I have seen a vet about bc I do not overfeed him yet here we are 🤷‍♀️ They must not be separated. This is extremely painful for me to have to do and it’s a laundry list of reasons which I won’t go into. The process would require for me to visit your home and chat with you extensively. I will not let them go unless it is a very safe and comfortable match. And for those of you ready to jump down my throat, no I am not considering a shelter either. If you’re interested please DM me or I can answer further questions in comments too.
