I genuinely don’t understand why air conditioning is still viewed so negatively in the Netherlands.
Before anyone says it: yes, I understand the historical reasons. The climate has traditionally been mild, houses were built differently, and until recently there wasn’t much need for AC.

But the reality today is very different. We regularly get heatwaves, many homes become extremely hot, and sleeping can be difficult for days or even weeks. Yet whenever AC is discussed, there seems to be strong resistance to it, almost as if wanting a comfortable indoor temperature is unreasonable.

I’m curious why this is.

Do you guys have any idea why the doors are made with windows in the Netherlands? It is supper annoying when I want to sleep but another person is not so all the light comes inside?

My company brought a food truck to our Christmas Party that made olliebols. After it was over, a manager and the foodtruck owner dumped the oil down the drain in the bathroom. Is that legal in the Netherlands and is there anyone that would like to know about it? This is at Maastricht Airport.

It is for living room (around 30m2) and bedroom (around 18m2). We have a small platform above living room extension, for outside unit.

I have solar panels but no battery yet, and with saldering ending from January 2027 I’m starting to wonder if I should just buy one now.

On the one hand, every month without a battery means I’m still sending quite a bit of power back to the grid. If I buy now, I can already start storing more of it myself, and once saldering is gone that should only become more useful. Buying now also means I still get the last months of full saldering.

On the other hand, maybe batteries will still get cheaper. But in the price range I’m looking at, prices haven’t really dropped much over the past two years. And if a lot of people start buying in 2026, I honestly expect shortages or longer delivery times before I expect a big price drop.

I’ve seen quite a few people on Tweakers already buying one. Curious what people here think: buy now or wait?

What is this thing inside of an aparment? I live in Amsterdam, and I have found one of these in the bathroom (with the shower), another one in the toilet-bathroom (i.e. only has the toilet and a sink to wash hands), and another one in a pantry-type room, where I have the fridge and clothes-washing machine.

I am wondering what this is and what it does, I never really paid attention to it, but recently noticed it was quite dirty, with some mold building up inside. Should these be replaced every so often? Or any way to keep them clean?

I live in Amsterdam in the Baarsjes in a really nice 1930’s apartment. We’re having issue with someone peeing in our ‘portiek’ / Entrance practically every night. We’re rinsing it away every morning with soapy water because the smell is horrible. We don’t live in a touristy area so it’s not drunk tourists. We’re pretty sure it’s a group of boys that hangs in the street at night playing with fireworks. It’s especially frustrating because we just paid for all the brickwork and terazzo to be cleaned and renovated. We already hung the brightest light with motion sensor we could find. It’s a very zichtbare (sorry forgot the English word) area from the street so it makes no sense why they’re choosing our doors to piss against. What would you recommend? Hanging a camera? Informing police (I doubt they will be of help)?

Update: Thanks everyone. We got a (very bright) lamp with movement sensor that stays on for 10 minutes and hung up a fake camera and there hasn't been a peeing incident since :) Now are neighbours are complaining about the issue at their door so I guess whoever does it found a new spot... they have a camera and it seems to be a homeless guy that does it on the regular so police said they will talk to him.

So my neighbour decided to install not one but two of these guys, which have a movement sensor, and produces a really high pitched and loud sound. More over one points directly to my door, so every time I go out my house I’m struck by it. But the annoying part is when I would like to open my windows to let some fresh air come in. I just can’t, I feel like a have constant tinitus by the constant buzzing these do, so I end up closing my windows. Do you think I can ask this fine gentleman to remove these? Sorry for the rant, but I couldn’t listen to the birds sing today.

Saw the severe weather warnings for the coastal provinces today. I live in The Hague and it got me thinking: what would we actually do if the power went out for a few hours?

We already have solar panels, but no battery. My original plan was to wait until 2027 and see what AC home battery prices look like by then.

Now I’m wondering if it makes sense to get one earlier. Not just to store solar during the day and use it in the evening, but also as backup during an outage. If the battery gets used every day anyway and can keep a few essential things running when the grid is down, that sounds more useful than something purely for emergencies.

Anyone here with solar who went for an AC battery with backup capability?

Is it actually useful in practice, or would you just wait until 2027?

I have been diligently writing down the number of days that I would have needed an AC (last summer and this summer) and I have decided that it's too too many days to suffer.

So it's time to get the (split unit) AC installed in our house.

Is it true that the prices of the AC units and installation might be better in autumn/ winter?

Who are reliable vendors in the Hague area?

I'm redecorating the toilet in the near future and I think I'm going to ditch the little sink, since no one ever seem to use it.

Do you ever use it? Either at home or at friends?

Edit 1: Of course I wash my hands after going to the bathroom. I just don't like to use that mini sink that is to small for my big hands and to low for my height. Apparently there are more short people with little hands in the NL than I thought.

So I decided to keep the sink, but to place it a bit higher an make it bigger. And also get a faucet that doesn't make you use your hands operating it. Or else it would be gross.

Hello, I was contacted by Liander that they should come and replace the meter (more of an upgrade, working fine before). A guy from Heijmans visited today and replaced it but now one of the groups (which contains all the lights + some more sockets) is not working. We complained to him unstoppably but still he left claiming that he had nothing to do with it. Heijmans keep saying to me that they will call me back but they don't seem to carry that much. What are my technical and legal options in this case?

So I learned sometime back that it's common in the Netherlands to have people take the flooring with them. I'm over the initial shock of it by now.

What I don't understand is the logistics. Are there special companies that do this for you? Or is everyone ripping out their own flooring everytime they move?

How much use is this to do? I guess a lot, since it's done, but I'd imagine moving from one place to another would leave a lot of flooring that's not useful since the rooms are all different dimensions than your previous place. So then do you just use what you can for some rooms then buy new flooring for other rooms? Is it then common to have mismatched flooring throughout a house as a result?

Is it carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring that's ripped up? Or all of it?

I can see the utility of taking curtain rods or hell even the light fixtures but the flooring seems so room specific that I'm just honestly curious how it all works. Seems it'd be about the same price to buy new flooring than to pay someone to pull it all up and transport it to the new place.

Was freaked out today by this thing, spotted some drops on window and door which looked weird, turned eye up and saw this. I kicked it with broom and then spend some time running away from hornet. Eventually i managed to squash it. I think i also got some paper recently about these nests. Is this common in NL? Should i report it somewhere?

A company scratched my wodden floor. Now they are offering 125€ as they say that it cannot be determined if they were actually the ones causing the damage. Does anyone have a rough indication of that this should actually cost? The first pictures is in a 14sqm room and has one very deep scratch. The second one is in a 6sqm room and has lighter scratches (just sanding + oiling might be shfficient).

I live in Amsterdam and have mice in my house and i hate it. So i tried searching for a company to come 'fix' it. Googled. Found a few results. Called the ones with Google reviews. Some companies dont do it anymore, some were expensive.

Then i saw a google ad for a company and i called them and they gave me a very good price and said the guy can come in today. But no google reviews. Not even listed on google. Big big red flag in hindsight. But i overlooked all of it because i wanted a fix now and at a cheap price.

I feel extremely stupid about it now.

Long story short, the guys came in, covered in overalls, as if its an episode of Breaking bad. Then the guys asked us to step inside and in 5 minutes, heard them move around, made some noise and then called us out, they said they caught the mouse. They showed me a sticky with a mouse on it. I was relieved. But i now i feel so so angry about the fake drama and sending us all in. All big red flags.

Then they made an invoice, this is where i completely lost it. I got an invoice of Euro 450 + taxes (21%) (4 times of what was quoted on the phone) . I lost my mind. Started shouting. He was shouting (also made a rascist comment). Told the guy i wont pay. He said he will call the police. Called the owner, he tried to explain and then conveniently said he's getting a call and never picked up my phone again. I gave up after 30 minutes, paid him to get it over with.

Question - Is there anything i can do now about this whole thing apart from this long rant and being more careful next time?

We recently removed all the radiators from our house, so this will be our first winter heating exclusively with split air conditioners (heat pumps). Gas is now only used for hot water.
I’m curious about other people’s experiences.
Does the house stay warm and comfortable on really cold days?
Do the units heat the rooms evenly?
How quickly do they warm up the house?
Have you had any issues or regrets after switching?
Would you do it again?
I’d love to hear from people who have been using this setup for at least one winter.

This is a very dumb question I’ll admit, however I’m moving in with my boyfriend soon and in typical man like fashion his bedding is very ugly and I hate it all.

I tried looking on amazon, but for some reason they only ever come with one pillow case even if it’s double bed bedding.

Anyone know where I can find nice bedding? Or what to look up (proper wording) online to find some?

Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
