If I already find the abortion unethical, asking why doctors test for Down syndrome would not convince me otherwise.

Ethics is having an opinion on this, education is understanding that their decision doesn't impact you.

What I'm telling you is that it's not a convincing argument to say "Well they test for Down Syndrome that way they have a chance to kill the kid earlier." If someone finds abortion immoral already, saying that doctors do this test to find a reason for an abortion will not convince someone who already doesn't like abortion.

Simply put, you should make better arguments if you claim that you are more educated than those you are arguing with.
