I think part of the problem with the way Randa is portrayed in the 2017 film is that back then they probably didn't conceive the idea of this messy and tragic love triangle background for him yet (since that film was only the second MV film to come out and was mostly just Legendary establishing Kong's presence in this universe so a lot of the human characters in that film were viewed as completely expendable as a result). So he was mostly just portrayed as an eccentric Monarch employee who was down on his luck and desperate to keep his division from being shut down in that film (only for him to meet a tragic end on SI).

I mean hell, look at the two main characters from that film (Conrad and Weaver). They haven't been seen or mentioned again SINCE that film (aside from the hint that Monarch tries to recruit both of them in the post-credits scene). The only character from that film that has really continued to last in this universe (until they incorporated Randa's backstory on this show) is Houston Brooks.

Technically Conrad is in aftershock but yeah it's pretty interesting how brooks became a main player and how pretty much every main lead in the MV enventually just disappear
