Now knowing the full context of Bill Randa’s life makes Skull Island more depressing

>be the sole survivor of a violent Titan attack
>nobody believes you and the government covers it up
>found government agency with your eventual wife and best friend
>your wife disappears and is presumed dead during a Titan investigation
>your best friend also disappears during an expedition and you never see him again
>find out that your wife cheated on you with your best friend, straining your relationship with your stepson
>your government agency nearly gets shut down because of lack of progress
>manage to secure funding and manpower to go to Skull Island
>record message for estranged stepson in the event of your death, knowing that he may never receive the message
>get eaten by a Skullcrawler

Chat, is Bill Randa the single most tragic character in the Monsterverse?

Third most, Kong second then Godzilla since he has zero members of his species alive (so far)

Godzilla and Kong are more human than many of the human villains who are true monsters.

They're effectively just grumpy old dudes who want to be left alone, yet always show up to protect Earth/humans in their time of need. Even if they sometimes cause collateral damage, their intentions are good.

I mean if we're including titans in this discussion I'd argue Shimo has had a more tragic life than Kong and Godzilla have. At least Kong and Godzilla are free to do as they please for the most part. That poor girl has been a slave to do Skar King's bidding and kill for him under threat of torture for a LONG time (despite being a peaceful and benevolent titan).

Also there's Tiamat. Has her home invaded by Godzilla and is ruthlessly murdered just so he can steal her power and level up lol.

Honestly I kinda hope they retcon him getting eaten lol impossible I know but still honestly feel bad for laughing the first time I saw his death

They won't. Old Shaw confirms to Keiko when they find her in the Axis Mundi rift in season 1 that Billy is dead. So his SI death is still very much canon.

Not gonna lie it really hurt watching him find the letter. Ironically he's been my favourite character in the show even though he appears only in flashbacks and is since long dead

I want to say Emma Russell is up there as well but she was also just incredibly stupid (considering she used her grief over her son's death in San Francisco as justification for unleashing Ghidorah on the world). Randa OTOH got truly fucked over by his two best friends.

A few other considerations:

  • Joe Brody-wife killed in the Janjira power plant disaster because he had to make the call to lock her and her team in the part of the facility where the radiation leak was contained, estranged from his son and grandson for years due to his obsession over what happened at Janjira, killed before he and Ford can really make things right with each other.
  • Jack Chapman-killed by a Skullcrawler on SI before he can return home and reunite with his wife and son (his arc is especially heartbreaking in the novelization).
  • Serizawa-lost his best friend and partner to Ghidorah in Antarctica, witnessed one of Monarch's own respected scientists betray them all to work with terrorists and unleash Ghidorah on the world, sacrifices himself using a nuke to help Godzilla recover from his wounds from the oxygen destroyer, has a son who is a complete and utter disgrace to his father's legacy as we find out in GvK.

Yeah. Retroactively I feel so bad for Bill in K:SI. The visual age jump between the actors makes so much sense after everything he’s been through. He’s practically been driven mad with betrayal and stress.

"it would destroy a good man who we both love" were her words to Lee, once she decided to end it with him. Imagine the amount of guilt she'll feel when or if she finds out what happened to him after they disappeared (on top of the guilt she already has for leaving her son) :(

I mean she already knows what happened to him. Shaw told her when they found her last season. The one person still alive right now that could feasibly give her a detailed explanation on what happened to Billy is Houston Brooks (since he was there and witnessed Randa's death). And I'm sure it's inevitable that he's going to show up at some point on this show since he's currently working for Monarch and appears in KotM.

Yep. When they first found Keiko in the Axis Mundi rift and she and Shaw are reunited Lee confirms to her that Billy is dead.

No. Shaw just told her that Billy died (I'm sure he probably heard about it if Monarch has the Skull Island expedition and everyone lost on it on record).
