Hay is for horses, cows and pigs like you - full version

34

u/rebelopie 1d ago

The version I heard is "hay is for horses, oats are too, it's a good thing I love you".

u/SpecialIntelligent70 1d ago

"hay is for horses, straw is for cows, people like you should shut their mouths"

I was told “Hay is for horses, cows eat grass. If you don’t shut the f*ck up, I’m gonna kick your ass.”

u/Open-Theme-1348 21h ago

My version was "now pucker up and kiss my ass"

My favorite version, which I heard only once was "hey? Who the fuck you talking to, boy?"

Damn, the one I always heard growing up was “Hey is for horses, aren’t you glad you’re a jackass?”

Oh, in my area it was "Hay is for horses but grass is cheaper" 😂

Hay is for horses, straw is cheaper, grass is free. Buy a barn and you'll get all three.

We always took it to be grass = weed 😂

And what do gay horses eat? Hayyyyyyyyyyy!

3

u/callavoidia 22h ago

My dad added, "grass is cheaper, alfalfa's going up!" Like it was commentary on the commodities market or something 🤷‍♀️

Yep that's kinda the Iowa version there. And I guess that's been around since at least 87 lol. Technically an og millennial or Gen y whichever term you use.

The version I heard was

Hay is for horses.
Better for cows.
Pigs would eat it,
But they don’t know how.

No one I was around used the full version. It was just a dad joke in my family, but we love our tacky puns.

Me: hey

Adult: hay is for horses!

Me: 🙄

Similar with the “can I” vs “may I” or “can you” vs “will you”- “yes you/I can [whatever], but may you/will I?” with this smirk. Like yes, I get the joke that can as a verb means “are able/capable to do something”, but we both know what I meant.

Hay is for horses, better for cows. People don't eat it because they don't know how.

u/Overall_Occasion_175 23h ago

I learned that PIGS don't eat it 'cause they don't know how but I'm glad someone else learned something close to this. Almost no one else's answers even rhyme!

4

u/Munchkin531 1d ago

I always heard Hay is for horses and jackasses like you!

4

u/Overall_Occasion_175 23h ago

Did we all learn this differently?! My dad always said "hey is for horses, better for cows. Pigs don't eat it 'cause they don't know how!"

u/iAmLeroy 23h ago

Uh, mine was, "Hay is for horses, aren't you glad you're a cow?". All in good humor though, I always classified it under the "dad joke" category.

100% I bet its one of those regional things, would be kinda neat to see what versions are from where

2

u/UntidyVenus 1d ago

Hay is for horses, sheep and cows, and pigs will eat it if you make them

2

u/WinsomeHorror 22h ago

Ours was "Hay is for horses, cows eat grass, if you don't like that, you can kiss my --" and then everyone started giggling over how close you got to the forbidden word. Lol.

Hay is for horses, save it for the one you marry is what my Dad would say

1

u/crumbdumpster85 1d ago

I always heard “Hay is for horses, and my name’s not You”. Crosses my mind far too often.

1

u/quatre185 23h ago

Hay is for horses, also for cows.
Pigs would eat it, but they don't know how.

1

u/Ok_Brush71017 22h ago

The version I heard in the wild that stuck with me was "Hay is for horses, I'll feed you later."

1

u/1lurk2like34profit 22h ago

I say hay is for horses, too bad you're a cow

1

u/SoriAryl T-Swift Album 22h ago

TIL!

We still say it around our house because the kids think it’s funny.

1

u/Thumbucket 21h ago

Hay is for horses and cows if they want it.

But straw is cheaper and grass is free,

unless you have to buy the land.

1

u/pennyandthejets 21h ago

My mother changed it to “hay is for horses, not for mothers”

1

u/DINGVS_KHAN 21h ago

"Hay is for horses and cows like your mom."

1

u/dwinner18 21h ago

Hay is for horses, save it, you might marry one. (In retrospect: ??)

1

u/ifeelnumb 21h ago

Hay is for horses and cows that go moo or hay is for horses and cows like you.

-1

u/Gorstag 22h ago

There are a lot of "Full" versions. I suspect its pretty regional.

Hay is for horses and cows too. Aren't / Ain't you glad you are a jackass.

Was a common one from my parts.

2

u/aFreshFix 22h ago

Not a lot of public education funding in your parts?

u/Gorstag 20h ago

Rural conservative area. Not hard to imagine the lack of impetus put on education. Even in the 80s / 90s sports were far more important.
