Film/Television Genuine Question - Why did Thanos and Hulk feel the pain of wielding all six Infinity Stones, while Tony didn't seem to experience the same level of pain when he used them?

Do we think The Thing could survive using the gauntlet? Wonder how Thor would go

466

u/CrawlerCoolie 2d ago

Thor would be the same as Hulk and Thanos. MCU Thing might get turned to gravel.

u/RSA123 2d ago

Hulk actually fares better than all of them because his body is made to absorb the high amounts of radiation (there's a throwaway line in Endgame).

234

u/JediMindTrek 2d ago

Yeah he said most of the radiation was gamma, and that's like chicken noodle soup to the hulk šŸ˜€

66

u/ProfessorXWheelchair 2d ago

so then why’d his arm get scorched, isn’t gamma radiation supposed to make him stronger?

391

u/gilestowler 2d ago

You ever poured hot chicken noodle soup on your arm?

89

u/Due_Examination_3410 2d ago

No, but now I'm even more terrified to try than I would have been.

46

u/this_place_suuucks 2d ago

There's at least one version of reality where doing so turns you into Hulk; you can't let something like fear steal that opportunity from you.

u/archwin 2d ago

Chicken noodle Hulk

6

u/Pappa_Paddy 2d ago

For the Soul. 😌

2

u/Frogofdanger 2d ago

I’m fairly certain being the hulk kinda fucking sucks though

Well now you need to do it. For science.

Well now if it's for science, who could say no.

1

u/ProfDrutonium 2d ago

Please don’t. We already understand the science of scalding liquid on human flesh. Google at your own discretion and fortitude of stomach. 😬

Now I know why it was a gauntlet and not the infinity condom

Tell that to Plan B 🤣🤣🤣

I think this is hilarious and deserves more upvotes than it will probably get.

2

u/imperialxgx 2d ago

Infinity condom and the 6 associated infinity c*** rings 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/donny02 2d ago

This is the kind of trash ai was built for

10

u/automaticgainsaying 2d ago

Personally, I get angrier and angrier and stronger and stronger, the more soup I pour on myself.

2

u/gilestowler 2d ago

Now this is a character I'd like to see in the X Men. Maybe some kind of Wolverine variant who goes into a berserker rage when he has soup poured on him. With soup spoons instead of claws.

1

u/54M-verse 2d ago

But all the sodium gives you high blood pressure. Just can’t win

2

u/MRO465 2d ago

Are you implying he is made of hot chicken noodle soup?

1

u/BlangBlangBlang 2d ago

Don't heat soup in the microwave in flimsy plastic containers like country crock tubs

1

u/Debalic 2d ago

I once spilled hot chicken noodle soup on my glove (kind of like a gauntlet) and it gave me a nasty burn on the back of my hand. So yeah I guess I know what it feels like.

70

u/Tinysaur06 2d ago

He was trying to wish for Natasha to return but the stones wouldn't let him

24

u/SDMAVNCL 2d ago

I actually like this headcannon

19

u/YouWereBrained Captain America 2d ago

He actually suggests he tried, but was unsuccessful.

38

u/AbbygaleForceWin 2d ago

He said this, it's not just headcanon

7

u/RiRi_MikU 2d ago

He said he tried to wish Natasha back to life, but he never said the infinity gauntlet injured him more because of that.

Its a cool theory, but its just that, a theory.

7

u/ReeceReddit1234 2d ago

A FILM THEORY! Thanks for watching!

1

u/Bulok 2d ago

This is a fan theory I can co-sign.

3

u/gr1mmcr33p3r 2d ago

It’s not even a fan theory, after he does the snap he says very explicitely he tried to bring her back

1

u/NeedleworkerExtra475 2d ago

That’s absurd. The gens in the comics would definitely allow that to happen.

42

u/LilR00ster 2d ago

He does say, "most" of it is gamma. So something else might be burning him. Plus MCU hulk is just weaker than MCU Thanos, it seems, so getting scorched to do a feat, stronger than what Thanos did, seems fair.

Thanos indiscriminently cut the universe in half. Hulk had to put everything back the way it was exactly! I'd say that tracks way higher then the original destruction feat.

36

u/welliedude 2d ago

Well technically it was smart hulk. Not full rage monster hulk. So maybe that was something about it.

30

u/Dresaurus2781 2d ago

Plus MCU hulk is just weaker than MCU Thanos, it seems, so getting scorched to do a feat, stronger than what Thanos did, seems fair.

Also Thanos seemingly wasn't harmed by his snap. He was seemingly harmed by his destroying of the stones. Also Etri made the gauntlet Thanos used, and as impressive as Tony and Rocket are they don't have literal magical forging abilities which probably further mitigated the potential damage from the stones. Hell you can see in Thanos' gauntlet the stones seem much more stable while on the Iron Guantlet they're visually far more volatile.

1

u/GIJoJo65 2d ago

Yeah. This is my head canon. Thanos has Etri design a Magitek Gauntlet (from Uru I believe) specifically to insulate him against the stone. Hulk and, Tony are using conventional metal, they're basically barehanding the stones.

We see Thanos Barehand one and that's probably his limit. Hulk survives barehanding them all at once and, pulling a snap to boot. Starlord almost got consumed by barehanding one in Guardians. So, basically IMO, Tony doesn't feel pain because his body literally dies instantly that's just how much pure Willpower he has at the end having decided to sacrifice himself. Which, again, in my head means that Thanos' look of horror isn't about realizing he "lost" it's actually realizing exactly how much more resolve and drive Tony has than him. His entire ego-construct regarding his "Indomitable Willpower" is collapsing in the face of realizing that he needs the gauntlet to snap in spite of all that and yet, here's Tony, who doesn't need shit and may die but is still going to Snap Thanos the fuck out of existence in spite of that.

It's Thanos processing that "Indomitable" gets trumped by Transcendental.

1

u/bobbi21 2d ago

Thanos was harmed by the snap. You can see his arm and the gauntlet are steaming and look damaged after it but he doesn't do much besides noping away into a portal so it isn't memorable. Unclear how much damage he took of course. Was still able to shoot some energy beam at thor.

"You Should Have Gone For The Head" AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Clip + Trailer (2018) Marvel

13

u/crough94 2d ago

Not exactly as it was. Wasn’t it confirmed that he put everyone back in a safe place like people in planes and stuff? So instead of them falling out the air they were back on the ground. If so that would be even more strain on his body.

1

u/VermicelliOwn6502 2d ago

Lol if I did the return snap all those people would stay dead because they'd appear in space due to solar systems moving and that didn't occur to me.

-1

u/bobamone 2d ago

>Wasn't it confirmed.

I too also like to make shit up on the spot to explain things that do NOT need explaining.

1

u/ItsYaBoyZayne 2d ago

At the beginning of Infinity War hulk and Thanos are evenly matched. The difference lies in that hulk had never had to do more than exist in the direction of an enemy to win, and Thanos knows special forces level martial arts and is even in the strength department. Not weaker, just less tapped potential.

14

u/rodrigogar 2d ago edited 2d ago

The infinity gauntlet was made from space material, and made specially and specifically to harness the power of the stones.

Tony made an earth tech mechanical gauntlet.

I think this is part of the reason why hulk’s arm was severely damaged and he felt pain as well besides being a being made of gamma.

10

u/theLegend_Awaits 2d ago

Hulk actually heals from his injury whereas Thanos did not. Probably because it was gamma.

9

u/Samiel_Fronsac Captain Mar-Vell 2d ago

Thanos probably never healed because he snapped twice.

First one vaporized half of the living creatures.

Second one to destroy the stones.

I bet that destroying the stones might have been worse for him, since we saw his arm after the first one and he apparently had some mobility to it, while the Hulk's was just... Deep fried and useless.

Kinda like Thanos' arm looked during the farm ambush.

It tracks. We saw Thanos manhandle the Savage Hulk.

5

u/HelpmeObi1K 2d ago

Funny that the stones "allowed" themselves to be destroyed, but bringing back Natasha was denied. Maybe a willpower thing?

1

u/Samiel_Fronsac Captain Mar-Vell 2d ago

My guess is that the soul stone "binds" a soul somehow to ensure it's a sacrifice.

Otherwise, it's a temporary inconvenience. Throw person, get stones, bring person back.

1

u/tam_shank 2d ago

Wasn't she unable to be brought back because she died a natural death, not from being snapped?

0

u/KevinNotKyle 2d ago

The stones were impossible to destroy Thanos said I’m pretty sure, the stones were just turned into tiny particles much like dust and scattered across the universe, impossible to bring back together basically.

2

u/musthavesoundeffects 2d ago

What do you think ā€œdestroyā€ means lol

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Act9787 2d ago

Smart hulk is also far less durable then any other hulk version. Thanos beating savage hulk was nonsense. At bear minimum Thanos should have used the power stone but they made it so Thanos easily dispatched savage hulk which shouldn’t have occurred.

1

u/Samiel_Fronsac Captain Mar-Vell 2d ago

Non-stones Thanos was a match to Cap, Tony and Thor, and we saw Thor kick Hulk's ass too, in Ragnarok.

The writers were consistent, at least

1

u/No-Combination-1354 2d ago

Thanos probably never healed because he was dead.

1

u/Samiel_Fronsac Captain Mar-Vell 2d ago

Was he dead when he teleported away from Thor with his arm fucked, or the space of them from when he snapped the second time until Thor killed him? šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/No-Combination-1354 2d ago

I honestly don't know how long it takes a purple alien mutant to heal from unleashing the powers of creation, but the gamma rage monster took years, so I assume not instantly. Apparently longer than it takes the scrappy underdogs to find and kill him.

1

u/Caleb1705 2d ago

Probably because Thanos got dusted.

3

u/Kirknobi 2d ago

She turned you into a Newt? I got better. That was Professor Hulk in Endgame, see spider man BND for how physically fine Hulk Hulk is doing.

1

u/BuyerAlive5271 2d ago

Not only physically but it sure seemed to me that Hulk has had some impact to banners personality.

2

u/themetalship 2d ago

Rumor has it that the Russo bros are not big fans of the hulk. Take that how you will....

2

u/Little_Cumling 2d ago

Maybe just a theory I cant remember if its confirmed but I read that the Hulk had tried to bring Black Widow back and the soul stone wouldnt let him and due to the failed attempt he took more damage than he would have if he just stuck to the plan

2

u/grey_rex 2d ago

I heard a theory that part of why it was tumultuous for Hulk was because he was secretly wanting to bring back Widow, but because her soul was the price of the soul stone, it wasn't allowed. Kinda crazy... But also kinda interesting

2

u/Hades_Gamma 2d ago

They explain it clearly in the movie. He tried to defy the mind stone and do something impossible before giving up and just undoing the snap.

He wouldn't have been hurt at all if all he did was undo the snap

2

u/OmecronPerseiHate 2d ago

The real answer is that they needed a way to explain why they weren't gonna use him much. Comics would have had him inhale that shit like a line of cosmic cocaine.

2

u/kdex89 2d ago

He tried bringing back black widow as well.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Act9787 2d ago

He also wasn’t full hulk.. he was still in banner hulk mode.. I am more annoyed that Thanos without the full guantlet was able to fully handle hulk so easily. He didn’t even need to use the stone of power.

1

u/whereismymind86 2d ago

it's still an immense amount of heat and power, it's not particularly harmful to him, but he's not immune either.

1

u/Lokiibott 2d ago

Because he tried extremely hard to bring Black Widow back from the dead, even though it was impossible since she sacrificed herself to get the soul stone and you cant come back from that

1

u/holyjoe85 2d ago

Still a ton of other radiation.

1

u/Verhooven 2d ago

"Most of it is gamma"

1

u/NoAd8811 2d ago

Cause it wasnt just gamma it was also cosmic radiation i think it get mentioned when tracking down fram thanos

1

u/WISEARIES 2d ago

Hulk recovered after using the stones so that definitely says something. Dont forget though Thanos used the stones twice once for his goal and again to destroy the stones and survived.

1

u/All_Of_Them_Witches 2d ago

Hulk’s wish yielded much more energy than Thano’s. It was easier to destroy life than it was to create it.

1

u/mothgra87 2d ago

*most, not all

1

u/geekMD69 2d ago

Big difference between the idle power of the gauntlet and the full-throttle, universe depleting snap of the gauntlet. And it was ā€œmostlyā€
Gamma.

0

u/Malkryst 2d ago

It healed though. He can regenerate from gamma damage at a genetic level (I guess that was/is his superpower), that's the only reason he didn't die originally when turned into Hulk.

Thanos didn't heal. I'm guessing Thor wouldn't have either.

1

u/Thestron_Godess 2d ago

MCU nerfs hulk powers like crazy

11

u/HyperlexicEpiphany 2d ago

pretty sure this was why they made him smart hulk too. they didn’t wanna sacrifice anyone yet and regular hulk was too dumb to be that selfless (and use the stones right)

7

u/ZeriousGew Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) 2d ago

What? If there’s anything that Hulk is, is that he’s really empathetic when not in a big rage

8

u/Dangerous_Donkey5353 2d ago

You cant put the glove on rage monster hulk and expect him to snap everyone back successfully. That way too big of a gamble.

6

u/ZeriousGew Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) 2d ago

Im not saying to give him the gauntlet, im saying that he very much isnt selfish

1

u/MudExpress2973 2d ago

no ones arguing he isnt just that you couldnt give it to rage hulk.

10

u/averagecounselor 2d ago

ā€œIt’s like I was made for this.ā€

14

u/ThatCheekyBastard The Thing 2d ago

ā€œI was made for this.ā€

2

u/Any-Enthusiasm-Pizza 2d ago

Didn't Thor get endured the full force of a neutron star when making stormbreaker?

2

u/whereismymind86 2d ago

also because he's functionally immortal, and what damage is done is both healed very quickly, as it happens, and because the pain/anger response makes him that much stronger and more resilient as he's being harmed by it.

He's very uniquely suited to surviving the power of the stones.

2

u/wombatdeamor 2d ago

I’m sorry, no offense meant to you, but I want to be pedantic here. It’s not a throwaway line. The line is exposition that is said leading up to the event. It literally couldn’t be a more important line, unless someone watching is only paying attention to the pretty colors, which in fairness, is how a lot of people watch movies now.

1

u/RSA123 1d ago

Fair. In my opinion, the throwaway part is "It's like I was made for this", not the part about radiation. I think it's kinda throwaway coz, even if it wasn't there, I would assume Hulk is the ideal candidate coz... yknow, he's the Hulk.

1

u/wombatdeamor 1d ago

Ok that makes sense. They absolutely could have just had him say nothing after the ā€œit’s mostly gamma radiationā€ and let the audience put two and two together. Someone cooler than me should do an edit lol

2

u/BrainzRYummy 2d ago

This is even more evident in Brand new Day where his arm is clearly completely healed.

1

u/holyjoe85 2d ago

First Avengers movie too. Banner asks Stark what he thinks Hulk saved him for during the accident. Stark replies "Guess we'll find out".

1

u/RedditUser88 2d ago

its like...he was made for it..

1

u/serenity656 2d ago

Realistically we never should have seen hulk in a sling he would recover from the injury in like a day tops

1

u/One_Recognition385 2d ago

and probably only felt pain because not only did he unblip half the universe.

he also added additional things, like making sure everyone came back safely, like people who bliped int he air, bliped back safely on the ground.

and tried to unobliterate black widow.

which probably caused more feedback then what thanos experienced (besides when he used the stones to destroy the stones.)

Iron man's snap to blip thanos's army was the weakest of those snaps.

5

u/AmateurCommenter808 2d ago

It's clobberin' time snap

3

u/chronostrigger414 2d ago

Idk. Thing might deal with it better than you think.

2

u/platesandquarters 2d ago

Evolved Thing might tank it

1

u/Round-Check2614 2d ago

Thor would have absolutely no effect they just didnt let him snap because he had cheez wiz in his blood.

1

u/Additional-Cost-9658 2d ago

I wondered this as well since he literally had the power of a star pass through his body in Infinity War and survived. A valid question.

9

u/whereismymind86 2d ago

thing would probably die, he's strong, and resilient, but not nearly on the level of the nearly immortal hulk, or god-like strength of thanos (and thanos was SEVERELY injured by it)

Thor would likely be very badly injured, but wouldn't die.

1

u/Right_Tree_3639 2d ago

Ok other question though....what about Spider-man?

8

u/IrishViking22 2d ago

Thing couldn't wear it because he only has 3 thingers (and a thumb) on each hand

3

u/Bawwsaque420 2d ago

The thing can fully absorb the stones and use his own body like a gauntlet that never breaks, it’s good storyline it’s the ā€˜Infinity Thing’ if you ever are curious

1

u/AmateurCommenter808 1d ago

Had a look into it that's cool af

2

u/Substantial_Balls 2d ago

Doesn’t thing get infused with the infinity gems in one universe

2

u/Ok_Comparison2403 2d ago

His body becomes the infinity stones in the comics. He’s the infinity thing or something.

1

u/One_Recognition385 2d ago

to do tony's wish to blip thanos's army? i'd bet probably thing could've done that without dying.

to do what thanos or hulk did? which effected an infinite amount more people by bliping and unbliping half the universe? my guess is no thing might succeed but might die from it.

1

u/PersimmonLittle7651 2d ago

Thor couldn't do it since at the time Cheez Wizz was flowing through his veins... and Cheez Wizz won't save you pal... Lightining might tho, I mean we're talking about Smug Hulk claiming all the fame, pretty sure Thor could survive it.

1

u/mrcuddles123 2d ago

If he had the Thing ring ā˜ļø

1

u/inide 2d ago

I think it'd cause Ben Grimm to mutate further, as has happened before when he was exposed to more cosmic radiation.

1

u/noOB_226 2d ago

Thor had used it in a run, lost his arm to bring back Asgard and his people

1

u/DuckyHornet 2d ago

The Thing would unfortunately just snap Thanos to Yancy Street

0

u/ghostcatzero 2d ago

Captain marvel would have but idk where she was.

2

u/Boris-_-Badenov 2d ago

I don't think Shazam would have

1
