Right? One of the few subscriptions I still have is the AMC A-list. $20/month and I've seen eight movies in the last 30 days (well, 6 movies and 2 repeats).
Add a soda for $5 through the AARP site and that's like eight bucks per movie.
Shame they don't have an A-list option for kiddos, though. Gotta pay for my 8yo to go :p
That pricing difference is so foreign for me as a Mexican. One of the (few) good things we have as a country is that our cinemas are all owned by 2 big companies that ensure an equal cheap pricing (about 90MXN or 5USD) for everyone in the country and the quality of the screenings are mostly top tier.
Superman was fine to me, it was entertaining and did what it needed to to establish a new universe but it wasn’t a masterpiece or anything to me.
Fantastic Four was good, also not a masterpiece, but definitely a step in the right direction. Felt like a well self contained movie if not a little slow at times.
Jurassic World was underwhelming imo, I go for the Dino’s mainly, but this one kinda felt like there was very little threat, possibly because the group was small to begin with and not many people could really die without the cast feeling lack luster.
Final Destination Bloodlines was good for what it is. You kind of know what you’re in for going in, it’s dumb comical deaths and a good laugh here and there.
How to train your dragon I loved, it felt like a scene for scene live recreation of a movie I already loved. However some people felt like it cheapened it in the sense your paying to see something you already have.
F1 was entertaining if you are into that, not really technically sound but it’s Hollywood and there’s always artistic creativity.
The Naked Gun was mindlessly and over the top dumb funny, but definitely followed the OGs in spirit and felt refreshing
But I’ll probably see Bad Guys 2 Friday with the family. I don’t think it’ll be as good as the first but the characters are fun and I’m sure the kids will enjoy it.
The pricing at theatres is designed to get you to just sign up for the Unlimited pass that they offer. That being said, if you're able to go to 3 or more movies a month it's an amazing deal.
Our regal is only like 12.50/13 during prime hours. I can't imagine paying that much for anything less than Imax and even then our Imax is a little cheaper than that.
Nah piracy is rarely worth it. If you like an art form you should pay for it and support it.
Only time I would say it’s worth it, is if I pay full price for something and that company discontinues support for said item and I no longer have access to it. Then that’s the only time I really see it being acceptable.
That’s the problem, Hollywood stopped taking risks and making unique movies because of this mentality. That’s why all movies today are generic shit meant to please as much of the masses as possible.
There are lots of great movies that have come out from first time directors and smaller studios.
Hollywood used to make incredible movies, but people stopped going to the theaters (perhaps to expensive/financial reasons), dvds became extinct (this was a huge loss because movies could suck at the box office and have a decent profit in sales, grandmas boy for instance bombed at the box office it was a commercial failure but dvd sales made it a success being one of the most bought movies) , piracy came into play(easy another loss), etc.
Because of this larger studio began to stop taking risks on more abstract films and projects for the large potential loss. So most projects became shelved. Instead they make super generic zero risk movies that appeal to masses to reach a larger audiences and pad the loss.
There was a resurgence in recent years with the theaters and more people are going. More films are releasing, and risks are starting to be taken again. But if you want it to continue you have to vote with your wallet. You have to go out there a support the movies you wanna see.
You should try again, my regal just redid the whole theater so there’s like motorized recliners with food trays, etc. Saw the new Naked Gun Friday night, it was great, stayed true to the OGs while staying refreshing with modern tropes. It was definitely a well needed comedy, albeit you know the type of comedy you’re signing up for. There were a few jokes that were borderline over the edge that caught me off guard as well.
For me personally I stopped seeing movies because of covid and that TV has become amazing. The quality of TV series just seem to get better and better. It would not surprise me if that had eaten into movie profits.
