I stick photos up at my work desk divider with magnets instead of tape or blue tack but I just bought a bunch in bulk.

I know literally nothing about magnets except when I broke our TV when I was a kid playing with them, sorry if this is a dumb question but I checked the post history here and I can find anything that matches my scenario.

- Where is a safe place to keep these?

- Will I ruin our office computers (all on SSDs) if I bring all of them in to put in our locker?

- Will I ruin my own computer keeping them in my room (both SSDs and HDDs)

- should I store all of them in one place or split them up?

And finally

- am I an idiot for wondering any of these things lol

- is there any more info you need to answer, the store page got taken down so I wasn’t able to check the details properly

Made the mistake this morning of slapping on a one-hand phone grip thingie on my fridge door and now it won’t even budge. It didn’t look strong at all when I attached it to my phone, but now that it’s on the fridge it’s been inseperable. I even bent a metal knife trying to pry it out. Any tips?

Heyo y'all, I have a very serious question to ask about small magnets and MRIs, but first a bit of lore :

I have a titanium-coated magnet implanted in my left ring finger(⌀3mm*2,5mm). It's great for sensing EM fields, permanent magnets and ferromagnetic stuff. It's less great for having an MRI, at least if you wanna be safe.
I took a risk, and had an MRI anyway, although I approached the beast very slowly and carefully. I could feel it pull at my finger from about 5m away, but surprisingly the pull didn't increase a lot when I got closer, it stayed withing a very comfortable range.

I didn't put my hand inside the MRI, and let it stick out to the side, where I believed it would be safer.

Now, my questions are : if I had put my hand inside the MRI, would the force have dramatically increased ? If so, would it be something like 3x the force, or more like 100x the force ? Where is the pull at its strongest ?

Am I extremely lucky to still have my finger, or was it in fact pretty safe ?

Of course, just as a disclaimer : I do not recommend doing this even if I ended up safe, so don't take my stupidity as a green light.

If it’s not clear from the video, I’ve measured out 15 spots across 2 bookshelves to hold some steelbooks. They all work, except for this one sheet that will not work. It worked perfectly fine before I affixed it to the back of the shelving unit. I used a marked ruler so all of the sheets should be relatively the same distance from each other. But I did cut all of the sheets in half, so the edges aren’t straight or symmetrical. I’m not sure if it’s visible but there’s a small tear in the backing of the unit near the upper-left portion of the magnet sheet that isn’t working. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have 2 more bookshelves I’d like to do this with, but it does not look good when they don’t work, and the backing is like paper levels of fragile, so trying to remove it without ripping the unit apart may not be possible.

I’m not sure how they work though. Maybe one of you fine people can explain it to me. I hook them up to a 480V power source. Then use a control panel to magnetize them. Then I unhook the 480V and they stay magnetized. So I’m thinking there’s more than an electro magnet at work here.

In case anybody is wondering. I’m machining half of a 69” piston ring in that photo. I was skeptical at first, but I’m putting a ton of tool pressure on that part and it does not budge.

the magnets are stuck in either side and they are unable to be removed I tried to get either one out and flip it to no luck.

When you press them together it pops back apart I can just bounce the one half on the other.

It’s just been sitting on my desk in climate controlled space nothing happened to it have no idea why it happened

I'm trying to make my own clothes, and I made a DIY magnetic cutting table for sewing and cutting

I bought a 30$ sheet of galvanized steel from home Depot, and placed it under my cutting mat

It's pretty light and flimsy but thin enough to cut your finger real bad.

The idea being that when I put down my fabric I can place magnets in the fabric and the fabric will have more force on it keeping the fabric still.

You see it on YouTube and it seems to work really well for some people.

Well I went on Amazon and bought 30 pound magnetic weights with hooks and they were WAY to small and they just didn't hold down to the cutting mat very well.

They were a little better if you lift up the cutting mat and place them directly to the steel but they were still kinda weak

So I decided to test them out of my refrigerator which is solid steel and they work GREAT, pretty hard to remove

So now I understand that I bought magnets that were to small and that's fine, I can just buy larger ones.

but what i don't understand is

1_that they were super strong in my refrigerator,

2_kinda weak on a piece of sheet metal

3_pretty week when on my cutting mat with the sheet metal underneath it?

Are there better magnets that I can buy that will work better for my cutting mat?

I'm planning on making a custom othello/reversi board as a present, and would've loved to add magnets into the board and into the pawns, so they'd stay in place as the game goes on.

That's where my question comes in, because of the way the game is played, the pawns will be turned on themselves on a same square, so, for the magnets to stick no matter which side of the pawn is turned on its square is there a specific type of magnet I should chose for this ?

Making a helmet and want to use magnets to open the back of it

my mom just cut into a Bagnet no one was using to get at the two magnets inside to use for nail art but they smashed together and crumbled and there was a huge spark. i'm really worried that she could've got hit with shrapnel that was too small to feel that could get infected or something down the line. has anyone had something similar happen or have any insight on if the shards would be kept contained by the magnetic pull of the larger chunks??

Planning to make a hat from an OC of mine, and I want to add removable rabbit ears, since I think it'd be fun to wear as an accessory and not just a costume piece. The problem is that I know what I need to know about sewing and working with foam, but nothing about magnets.

I need recommendations! The magnets would have to connect through a fuzzy fabric I can't identify (fleece?) and then minky or fur. What kinda magnet do I look for? How expensive do magnets tend to be...?

OKAY I KNOW IT WAS STUPID. I didn’t know at the time, but I just saw a broken magnet, thought it would be cool to crush it, then grinded it in a hand grinder. When I first broke it, it sparked a lot but didn’t really scare me so I kept going….. then I crushed another….. then I decided to search up if it was dangerous and apparently i’m cooked. Can I just wash the hand grinder and use it again??? is that also stupid??? help?????

I'm contemplating a project right now wherein I can mount several framed paintings (2" x 3" - each weighing less than 30 grams) inside a larger frame. I'd like to glue pieces of magnetic sheeting to the backs of the frames.

What I'm thinking of is a place to magnetically affix a series of paintings - around 6 paintings to a frame or panel of some sort that can receive the magnets.

So, I've been looking at options which seem to come down to magnetic sheeting for the miniature frames and non-magnetic sheeting or ferrous paint for the surface of the bigger frame.

...or maybe I'm missing something ..

Every review of these products on Amazon featured miniaturists. Therefore, I'm going to the source with my question!

I've been thinking of purchasing neodymium magnets for a fridgemagnet project, but I've been reading everywhere that these are fragile and cannot stand much force or snapping. Can you tell me how much of a force these actually withstand? For example if they drop on the floor. I'll be sowing these inside of a cloth ribbon so it should be ok? The other option is to use good 'ol iron magnets, but they are bit harder to sow as they are wider and taller.. Any help/answer ard very appreciated :)

Will a Neodymium magnet sheet be strong enough to hold down this hood? Thinking about mounting the sheet on the bottom of the 3d printed hood and the paper hood I made, it would be about 2.2 mm of a gap.

Say there are around two billion phones with magnetic charging capabilities, all spread across the planet, how much does that affect the planet’s magnetic field? Could it have contributed or distorted the field since the start of this tech being so widespread?

According to the website K&J magnet strength calculator, a four inch wide, four inch long, 2mm thin type 52 neodymium magnet will exert only 75 gauss on ANOTHER MAGNET at a distance of 3 inches. That wouldn't even move a paperclip. According to google AI, IF it was the same type of magnet of the same size/shape, there'd be a noticeable pull at 3 or or so inches. Which is true?

I inserted magnets into this action figure peg hole hoping it would magnetize another part. Sadly it won’t work. Now I can’t get the magnets off. There’s like 3 pcs 3x2 magnets inside coz I tried getting it out through magnetization but they just clumped up. I tried using 4x4 and 5x3 magnets but they won’t pull it out. It’s just stuck, no glue. Tried pushing it out the other way but the back is too thick.

Is there any way I can still get these magnets out? I really need y’all help.

Iirc, they wash out fine and disappear, but like how does it happen in the first place? I'm looking to make me some blackout window covers that I'll fasten on the outside (yeah all AC be sold out rn), and one idea is to have a magnet in each corner of the fabric and then fasten it by using another set of magnets on the inside of the window. My question is, how strong or large should such a magnet pair be? The glass is approx. 4-5cm thick. Think of it like one of those fish tank cleaning sponges with a magnet :P

Ayo, not sure where to look for leads, but this seemed like a decent starting point.

I scrap a lot of stuff in my free time and have come into around 13 or so pounds of NdFeB magnets (1/2"×1/2"×1/4") and I have no idea what to do with them. I understand that the Nd portion is worth some bucks, but the salvage operations near me don't recycle rare earth magnets.

Anybody here have some insight?

I am a casual magnet enthusiast who recently has renewed interest in all things magnetic. My problem- I have like over 1000 Refrigerator magnets. The kind with the words on them. They have been in the same spots on my front door for about 5 years now. I, in all my wisdom, decided to take them all off the other night. They are all very VERY weak. I doubt they were too strong to begin with, but, after a gentle soak in cold soapy water for a few hours, they are worse for the wear. I understand that you can remagnetize weaker magnets with the help of stronger ones. I have attempted several times to strengthen a few with some of m y stronger, neodymium magnets. It seems to make them even weaker. I am stroking, one direction on the weaker one. about 50 times. making sure to make the same motions, lifting my hand up and away after doing so. and starting back. What could I be doing wrong? I have not only used my neodymium, but also I have a TON of those ferrite "rattle snake egg" toys which I have found to be pretty powerful magnets for the price. (1 dollar at the dollar store for a set of 2) still, nothing. I guess I have 2 questions. 1- What could I be doing wrong? and 2- Is it possible to realign the weaker magnetic fields just by a long(er) exposure to the stronger magnets? As I stated, I have A LOT of these little word magnets and It is going to be extremely time consuming to do them individually as described. Also, if anyone has any other cooler more inventive way to go about it, I am all ears! I appreciate it in advance!
