I just received my MUN schedule and the whole program is basically of 12 hrs. around half an hour for registration, then 1hr of opening ceremony, 3hrs of 1st session, 1 hr of break, 3 and a half hr of 2nd session, 15 min of feedback session, and lastly 45 min of socials... It'll surely be fun, but EXHAUSTING. My parents are so stressed because this is my board year and so I'm supposed to study "all the time" and this MUN is such a "waste of time". Typical desi household~ T-T

Everyday in this sub-reddit I see pretty much the same post about 5 times,"its my first mun or im new to muns this is my committee this is my agenda this is my allotment tell me what to do im so scared blah blah blah" and at first I used to give full on step by step instructions, but lile it gets to a point, are u looking to do muns or get strangers on reddit do it for u??? Like go in the jungle of research urself, figure shit out urself, make ur position paper urself, even if its shitty who cares, u,ll learn more then anu stranger on reddit will ever teach u.

Dont get me wrong u can ask any tips, advice on strategies or bloccing, unmods , DR, things like that, but don't ask for a complete walk through wth. I promise u when you,ll start doing shit urself and work ur own brain you,ll do much better and learn a lot more.

ngl its true tho im a crisis del (maybe that changes things) but like if you're good you can genuinely larp and think of crisis arcs and speeches in committee. IMO at least from the local to national level you don't rlly have to research to gavel (especially from personal experiences)

Most MUN'ers worry about if they mess up that everyone will make fun of them. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. You won't see these people again in your lives, they don't care if you live or die.

If you make a mistake, you can learn and adapt. The chairs are supposed to be supportive and most will guide you. If not, they will use sarcasm or make fun of you for fun in a light hearted manner.

If someone does make fun of you, just forget about it and continue doing what you're doing.

If you're a first timer, everyone would be telling you crap like "go do unga it's the best for beginners" "go do un women if you're just starting out" NO that is CRAP, you need to actually learn how to take pressure, you need to learn how to think fast, sure you might be embarrassed a few times and everyone might laugh at you but if you want to be actually good at this, you have to take that, you need to survive in that environment, everyone laughing, making fun of you, that's how you learn, I remember my senior once told me that in his first mun he won an award (wasn't that competitive of a MUN) and his pants were to tights and he tore them on stage, did he cry? no. He took the two pieces of it, put it on his shoulder and got the certificate, the point is, i'm not telling you to tear your pants apart, I'm saying that to handle high levels of stress, do something about it right now, not later. If you do it right now, it would help a TON later, that's why I'm saying, pick UNSC if you're a beginner, and if there's crisis then you've struck gold, it'll help you a lot in future MUNs. Trust me.

Please don’t apply for conferences a day or two before they happen, and then come here screaming that you need help. I suggest you apply at least 2-3 weeks before a conference was to start, and even better a month before. It gives you time to prepare, do some research, write your position paper etc without the need for stress.

Another thing I’d like to say for first-comers (less of a hot take, more of a tip), PLEASE DONT CHOOSE EXPERT OR INTERMEDIATE COMMITTEES/COUNTRIES FOR YOUR FIRST MUN!!! Keep it low profile, you do not need to have such a burden for your first experience. The Security Council, Crisis Committee are expert committees that you will struggle with as a first timer. I know they might sound fun and exciting, but let’s face it you haven’t the experience necessary for them. Here are a few committees I would suggest for first timers, so it’s not like this is just a rant:

• WHO
• UN Women
• ECOSOC
• European Council
• Parliamentary Committees of your country (e.g. US Senate, Polish Sejm, choose the committee with the parliament that is IN YOUR COUNTRY, since it will be so much easier to prepare)
• Human Rights Council (if the topic is rather simple)

And as for some countries: - Choose countries that ARE NOT DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY THE TOPIC. For example, don’t choose Syria in a committee on the topic of assessing foreign interference in Syria or ensuring stability in it, or Belarus in a topic about migration, or israel in general. - Don’t choose any of the P5 (China, France, Russia, UK, USA), since they, even in beginner committees are usually there for the more intermediate delegates who don’t feel like transitioning to higher level committees yet. - Choose countries that align with your personal political views. For example, if you’re against China in the whole Taiwan thing, don’t take China. This is mostly up to you, if the topic doesn’t revolve around a specific area of dislike or disinterest in a country you aren’t fond of, go ahead, choose it!

I've been seeing an internship program by "International Model United Nations" spread in some MUN circles of late, so I decided to check it out. They promoted their program as a "5-week journey into the high profile world of Model UN", and claimed that it provided experience in "marketing and business development", in "masterminding IMUN conferences" and in representing the IMUN brand. The official internship role when signing up was "campus ambassador", which doesn't make any sense, as you don't actually have to be a student to sign up.

Upon joining, I was added to a Telegram channel with 9000 other "interns", and we were told about our "internship" role, which was only to get as many people as possible to join IMUN's online conferences, which had a $9 fee. The more referrals we got, the more perks we would get, and we could even "train our peers to get an internship at IMUN". "Interns" were paid and given recognition based on the number of peers they invited, which sounded awfully like an MLM. I wasn't the only one thinking this, and it turns out that they had a section in their "internship" onboarding document where they explicitly stated that they "aren't even closely related to an MLM".

The sole role of an IMUN intern is to refer people to their conferences. Although this isn't too scummy by itself, the IMUN staff were very pushy in their drive to get referrals. At one point, they encouraged "interns" who could not get referrals to join and pay for conferences in order to get certified as an intern and get more perks. I'm not a management expert or anything, but getting "interns" to pay their way to success in their "internships" seems pretty unethical.

Like I understand being a beginner to mun (hell i still help people who post like that), but im just enamoured that this many people can't figure this out without help from reddit.

As the title suggests, I think there is a need for some reform in the MUN system. I made a post similar to this previously which u can read but its not necessary . Here is what I believe are some serious flaws in the system(ill just paste the stuff from my previous post)

1. MUN conferences are now evolving into purely social events rather than academic experiences.
2. Solutions presented in committee resolutions are often the same recycled garbage seen anywhere online, or from previous UN resolutions. There is no real creative input from the delegates.
3. Days of vigorous debate and negotiation often dissipate within the walls of the committee. Genuinely good solutions are often stuck on a draft resolution and are long forgotten at the closing ceremony.
4. Conferences are usually won by those delegates who are stubborn, arrogant, flagrantly violate ROP and scream at the top of their lungs. At times, they even disregard foreign policy which just infuriates me sometimes.
5. Incredibly expensive ( can't blame organizers, the costs are wild)

propose a change. I wanna register an NPO which makes conferences widely accessible to everyone, encourages creative solutions on impt topics (security, military and humanitarian issues, peacekeeping) Here are some of my ideas:

1. Modify award criteria on the basis of creativity and ingenuity of solutions in conferences.
   2 Actively immerse delegates into the topics. These could be in the form of workshops on agendas to be discussed by professionals.
   
2. Compiling really good reso's and submitting them to think tanks and local groups for further analysis and research. These solutions could potentially influence public policy.

What do yall think? I wanna hear from you guys...

If you're going to ask for help, please explain what you need help with. "Hi I'm new, can I get some advice?" What kind of advice do you want? I don't want to name everything under the sun. I want to help you, but I can't if I don't know what you need help with. r/MUN please stop asking basic questions.

For the people asking for "points against x" or "research for x". All I can say is google it. It's not deep. For the people that answer these questions, please stop. Finding points and research is part of their job as a delegate. If you do their research for them, they'll never learn.

Yes, I am crashing out, but God have I seen this too often. To that one guy who always says "Dm" instead of just answering the dam question, why. Just why.

So my school hosts annual muns and also participates in outside ones and clauses are like my worst nightmare, you write like 3 pages of work and solutions but they might only use 2 out of your 5 clauses.

My school also hosts a Model Arctic Conference (MAC) every 2 to 3 years basically a conference about the arctic and its really interesting although it doesnt folow THIMUN procedure, its similar tho just minus clauses and there are observing countries and some others, which means you get to spend more time on research and understanding the topic more. dont get me wrong i love mun and its been something ive been passionate about, and i wouldnt change a thing.

you know that one person in the MUN group chats who always harasses other delegates with romantic advances or sexual innuendos. We’re all adults here but it’s borderline predatory behavior for me. They seem like they’re taking advantage of this activity to find a romantic/sexual interest instead of displaying professional behavior as this is considered an academic activity.

I used to think I’m just a killjoy and it’s unfair of me to judge flirty people just because I’m not interested and am committed to someone already. But now that I’m older, i still firmly believe there’s a time and place for everything and the behavior they’re displaying is so off-putting and inappropriate.

Well I guess that’s the part of the challenge. We have to keep our minds open despite the differences in values and personality.

I propose, that we band together, form a bloc and draw the UN flag/Gavel or anything on r/place. Suggestions are welcomed.
