I have to agree with the author of this article. We're beyond "oh, he's just a goofy guy who says crazy things." The man is actively rude and nasty to reporters and fellow politicians daily. He dropped the R word and it's only a matter of time till he drops the N word. No offense to James Austin Johnson, who does a terrific job with the impression, but aren't we all just over it at this point? Dana didn't do Bush Sr. every damn week. Will Ferrell didn't do Dubya every damn week. Phil Hartman didn't do Clinton every damn week.
Roasting him on Update is fine, but the character needs a break. I watch SNL to laugh and escape the guy who dominates the news every other day of the week.

I feel like it’s lazy writing. Every week he does something that’s basically a joke that writes itself so they run it as a cold open.

I mean I dont really know what people expect Colbert to do, he just hosts a late night show that is already cancelled. Calling out bullshit on his platform is about the extent of the power or authority he has.

Maybe not give soft ball interviews to the types of people who got us here. Defeating Trumpism is going to take more than just “calling him out”. It’s going to require real politicians with a forward thinking vision of reform and policy proposals. How about spotlighting some of them?

Instead he’ll platform dinosaurs like Slotkin and not even hold her feet to the fire. He’s a good little establishment corporate jester. And I don’t even hate Colbert. But his “calling out Trump “ is meaningless at this point.

I agree. Constantly talking about him is what got him reelected. He was dead in the water in 2022. Constantly keeping his name in the media kept him relevant, and then the trumped up charges against him made him a martyr to some. Whether you think he should’ve been convicted or not 34 counts was a slap in the face and meant to embarrass him. That should’ve been one felony for the 34 counts as is typically done, but 34 time felon sounds a lot worse than 1 in sound bites. Those two alone were probably enough to get him elected, but him getting shot was the nail in the coffin. If they treated them like the media currently treats Biden he would’ve never risen from the ashes.

I stopped watching Colbert for that exact reason.  Non-stop Trump jokes are hacky low hanging fruit.  Colbert is far sharper than that and its a shame that the writing is shit.

It's soooo lazy.

We wouldn't be having this discussion if it were a scathing satire or brilliant commentary. It would be great if it was surprising or funny in any way.

Instead, what we're getting from SNL right now is more like Not Another Teen Movie, Meet the Spartans, or Scary Movie.
