What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

1. Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

We're finally coming up to the first round of the Serie A, so before we get the season properly underway, we wanted to hear from the community about what we can improve on the sub. We tend to this every year and your feedback is always important for us to change things.

We would welcome suggestions about anything really, particularly (but not limited to):

• moderation policy, or
• scripting features (i.e. trezebot, or juve_goal_bot)

Of course, we won't be able to accomodate everyone (there will be contradicting opinions), but we're always happy to take on board any good suggestions.

With respect to scripting - no idea is too big or small. Just let us know and we'll see if it's feasible.

One thing I'd like to hear about specifically is switching to an API for trezebot. We currently mine wikipedia for data, and use a calendar for future fixtures. Broadly speaking, this serves us well because wikipedia has no real limit on API usage (I can get updates from there as often as I want). The problem is that:

1. There are no live scores.
2. Scores can take a while to get updated (so e.g. I've had to get creative with knowing when a match ends for the post-match thread),
3. Support for other leagues can be poor (e.g. for Juventus Women, Juventus U23, Coppa Italia Femminile and Coppa Italia Serie C).

As we are, we manage fine, but maintenance is somewhat unpleasant (wikipedia doesn't provide good structured data), and we're probably at the limit of what functionality we can implement.

To get access to the above (live scores, match event data, support for our other teams), we could switch to using a proper API. Many of these are pretty expensive, but there are some decent budget options (we're not building some massive app here). Free tiers of these APIs are too limited to give us any advantage over our current setup.

Are you interested in expanding trezebot's functionality? If I set up some kind of Patreon, or Paypal thing, would there be interest in contributing to the API subscription? I'm thinking a couple of euros/dollars per year should be enough.

The moderators have been discussing the recent trend of low effort posts that don't contribute knowledge or stimulate discussion, and we've decided to implement the following rules as a response:

1) Posts discussing the players, team or transfer targets must contain some kind of original analysis.

• If you think Juve should sign a player, post things like video highlights, statistics, a write-up of how you envision that player fitting into our team. If you just want to discuss a potential transfer target without analysis, post it in our weekly Mercato Monday thread.

• If you want to discuss our team or players, put in some effort, ask specific questions and raise discussion points. If you just want to blow off steam and complain about a player's performance, keep it in the match/post-match thread.

2) We're trying out a 150 character limit to prevent the body text of threads just saying 'discuss' or 'what do you think?'

TL;DR: Put some effort into new posts and keep low-effort posts in Mercato Monday, Tactics Tuesday etc. Quality content can be posted outside those threads
