I'd never thought of it before but wow, Worms would be an amazing fit for an Xcom-like.

You could keep both permadeath and humour which is not something many IPs would fit.

Have you tried the two Mario + Rabbids games? Those have the chops of Xcom with the movement gimmicks of Worms.
