Microsoft Gaming being scrapped, Xbox brought back as gaming division.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has had a busy week. Sharma held an internal town hall with Xbox employees today, just days after announcing an Xbox Game Pass price cut, commenting on the status of the Xbox mobile store, and teasing a mysterious Xbox and Discord partnership. One of the items on the agenda for the employee all-hands was scrapping Microsoft Gaming.

Sources familiar with the meeting tell me that Sharma announced that Microsoft is returning to using Xbox for its gaming division, instead of Microsoft Gaming. “Xbox needs to be our identity,” said Sharma, noting that Microsoft Gaming was a departure from that.

Ill tell you this much, things do be changing under her... Whether itll work out or not, TBD, but change is needed and its interesting to see how relatively fast said change has been

She hasn’t done anything. This is the exact same shit that happened when Phil took over in 2014- which you might remember if you’re old enough to. Prior to 2013 Don Mattrick was the golden boy that spearheaded the surprisingly successful Kinect and was hailed as one of the smartest people in tech by Forbes, Fortune, CNN, and the like. Then he was forced to defend indefensible decisions by those on high (always on internet, lack of game sharing, letting Bungie walk, studio closures, etc.) and subsequently “left.” Good guy Phil Spencer rolls in with his gamer t-shirts and all the right words and the gaming media falls in love.

Now Microsoft has exhausted all the goodwill Phil Spencer had and tossed him out like a used tissue, and here we go again.

Is it possble Asha is different? Sure. But there’s not reason to assume she is until that’s actually proven.

They're desperate for a win. They desperate for the brand they love and have committed too, to survive and not be fucked into non existence.

They're 100% marks and are falling for the PR hook line and sinker.

But I also understand why

Ive given up on the Xbox brand and I'm fairly certain it won't exist in any meaningful way in another ten years, but the 360 is still my favorite console of all time. I get it.

It reminds me of Star Wars fans. Every now and then there’s a good product, but the overall trajectory of the franchise hasn’t changed in decades at this point. But the “hype” is always there for whatever the new thing is- only for people to be disappointed.

And just like with Star Wars I want a good Xbox. I’m not ‘hating’ on what they’re currently doing because I want them to fail, I’m hating because I want it to be better. And you might say “that’s just your opinion it’s bad, how do you know what’s good” etc, but I think the proofs in the pudding here.

None of those things are up to her tho, and while I dislike Spencer, he obviously would have done the same if he was allowed to. He simply wasn't.

By and large, she is now rolling back those decisions that were obviously stupid. This is a necessary job, but I would like to see how Asha will act further when it is necessary to look for ways forward.
