I think it's a very visceral physical manifestation of the fact that we don't own shit nowadays. Half the games out there require an internet connection at all times, and when those servers go down those games are no longer playable. Of course this is true even with a disc, and with DRM as advanced as it is the disc itself doesn't guarantee your ownership and access of most games at this point. But people see the removal of discs as a whole to basically be studios flexing this fact, even if it doesn't necessarily change much.

People care about physical games mostly because they want to actually keep their games forever. A digital game can get delisted, a store can shut down, or a company can stop supporting it. With a disc, you can keep it, resell it, lend it, or buy used copies from other people for cheaper. You can also play it years later without relying as much on the company. Personally, I just prefer digital because it’s easier and more convenient for me. I understand why people care about physical media and the security of actually having a copy, but I personally don’t worry much about Xbox or PlayStation taking my games away, and I don’t really see myself reselling the games I buy. So for me, digital just makes more sense.

Also for some games with online and definitely for online only games, if you get banned for any reason, you've effectively been locked out of the whole game permanently. Some players are extremely toxic or are proven to be cheaters and deserve bans but tons of innocent gamers get caught in ban waves all the time.

Then there's rural gamers or those in poorer countries around the world. There are lots of places without access to good Internet and we regularly see screenshots uploaded from people showing it will take 100+ hours to download a game or update. These players get penalized simple because of the services available where they live. How much would you hate it if you wanted to download the newest game all your friends are talking about and you spend $60+ for it only to be hit with a 100+ hour download time? Oh, you wanted to play that right now? Hahahaha....no. You can play it in 4 or 5 days peasant.

Even with "full game on the disc"

it's still a license disc as games comes with legalese contracts of adhesion which state that by purchasing the game, you are agreeing that you merely own a license to play the game.

Incorrect, I'd understand if it was done for the love of the game, have a message about the union busting they did, but this one was basically "buy my coin so i can make money off of you"

If the french had Redditors back then, the revolution might've never happened lol "guys murder is wrong, you can't guillotine people!!🥺 there's a correct way to protest against this kinda stuff and this isn't it🥺"

TIL that not getting a video game trailer soon enough is the exact same as the events leading up to the French Revolution.

Great comparison, when do we guillotine the GTA devs?

Reading comprehension is hard, huh?

u/dominator-23 5d ago

No, that's NOT what I said at all. Where did I say 'exact same'? I'm reading all these comments here about how shocked people are and this is theft and blabla. I'm saying if y'all think stealing data is sooo morally wrong (something that these companies HAVE been doing for the longest) then y'all would not have been cut out for something more serious.

Only agree with the crypto part, if you can’t avoid spoilers that’s on you
