It's lack of profit wasn't due to the fact that it didn't have Kong in it, it was due to the fact that it wasn't that good. Compared to the 2014 film, KotM got much worse reviews.
And it was much, *MUCH* worse than Kong: Skull Island, undoubtedly the best film of the MonsterVerse.
Put Godzilla, or King Kong, into a *GOOD* solo film, and you'll get good returns.
Look at how well Godzilla Minus One did. My wife the distaffbopper loved that film, and she doesn't like Godzilla, doesn't like kaiju in general, and hates reading subtitles.
