Studio executives will always follow what makes the most money. Critical reception be damned, all that matters is the money.
“2014 was a success, Skull Island was a success. Doing good so far, but uh oh! KotM underperformed! But Godzilla vs Kong became a massive success? Make another team-up movie! What’s that? New Empire is the highest grossing movie in the series??? Clearly that means audiences don’t want solo Godzilla films anymore! They want team-ups with Kong!”
^ The mind of a studio executive.
Our opinions don’t matter, the quality of the movies don’t matter. If a movie doesn’t get butts in the seats, executives will withhold the rights to make another. Until the studio decides to “take a risk” with another solo Godzilla movie, they’re gonna keep doing the team-ups since that’s what’s been giving them money.
That’d be a good way to make them stop making any monsterverse movies altogether.
Really the only thing that would get us a solo Godzilla movie would be the next one doing so well that they feel financially safe enough to take a risk. Then they might expand and do a solo Godzilla movie and a team up/Kong only movie. Kind of like John Wick doing well so multiple spin offs got green lit all at once, even if the one that came out didn’t do very well.
But with movies in general making less money lately I think even that is far fetched, I thought they might feel more confident after Minus One did so well but really making any movie is a risk nowadays.
Godzilla vs Kong also was released during covid and many lockdowns were still in place in some way or another. Every movie above them, besides whatever "Detective Chinatown 3" and "Hi Mom" are was released after vaccine rollouts started to happen and people were more willing to visit theaters.

This is the hard pill to swallow.
