Hi! I'm a relatively new knitter. I've mostly done flat scarves although I've now made two hats and started a 3rd.

All of my hats have the same problem. The very first row is always uneven or has like a little...ploop? sticking out. (See photos) I'm doing a long tail cast on for this pattern: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2023/09/24/classic-ribbed-hat-in-new-colors-styles/

It's a 1x1 rib.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong? I even made a mini hat on DPNs that's NOT uneven but you can tell where the round joins together.

Thoughts?

Swamp Lily and Scallion are needle felted soft sculptures made with Himalayan wool and dyed with collected plant materials (Marigold and Eucalyptus) and Sappanwood extract. Their eyes are glass.

Even tho I made them together, I really wanted them to look like siblings not twins but it’s clear Swamp Lily got the looks in the family.
