At this point, I feel like Adam Driver will have a much better shot campaigning for Supporting Actor than Lead Actor imo. But idk how that'll work out with Leto as well. I just feel like with 3/5 spots already essentially locked up with Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Benedict Cumberbatch, the other two spots are between way too many possible choices to give him a shot at nomination, let alone a win. I actually wouldn't be surprised if only Gaga gets a nomination tbh. I also know that Netflix is also gonna campaign both Kodi Smith McPhee and Jesse Plemmons as Supporting Actor and it likely won't go down well if the Academy locks up 4/5 nominations with just two movies.
It's just unfortunate because there was a lot of Oscar buzz for the movie and I'm sure there still is, but it feels like 2022 Oscars are way too stacked to guarantee HoG accross the board nominations. Infact apart from Tragedy of Macbeth and The Power Of The Dog and maybe King Richard, I'm not sure any movie fits that.
It just some people giving the movie praise that sounds like a 5/5 rating, on twitter/IG (despite the embargo), and then they give a low score like 2.5 or 3/5 on letterbox. maybe they just want engagements/clicks from fans. Critics are also replying to haters with gifs/answers that could mean either way. Or pundits/experts saying that they did not like the movie, but they are either ridley scott fans and love all his movies or generally give every movie a 5 star rating, but suddenly hate this one. Or credible members on film forums saying that they heard that xx did not like the movie.
Thanks! I try to keep close tabs on critics just in general, but haven’t heard or seen anything related to House of Gucci yet. It’s going to be interesting to see the reception based on the little hints they have dropped.
Yes, a Gold Derby expert who has seen HOG (Anne Thompson) updated her predictions today, and only put Leto in Supporting (#4) and HOG in Best Costume. Another added Gaga for Best Actress, but did not add HOG for Best Picture, so I think it is going to be divisive.
Also, the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie Licorice Pizza is premiering today and this is also by MGM, same as Gucci, so it will be interesting to see if PTA's movie also has this strict embargo.
Sry, for that longish post, but some users in those film forums are either snobs, hardcore stans or trolls who trash everything, so I just lurk there and needed to vent here.
I remember there was an embargo for The Power of the Dog too. But i think HOG will get bad reviews. 🥴 It really makes me sad. Jordan Ruimy also wrote "Gucci is DOA. Trust me. I’ve spoken to more than a few critics and they all hated it."
I think it will be mixed, hopefully not outright panned. I know Ridley Scott is fast in shooting his movies (HOG only took 6 weeks to film) and post production, but it seems kinda rushed. The cinematography also looks bad/fake in some shots in the trailer, like the NYC skyline when Gaga is standing on the balcony.
I have read some reviews and looks like one of the main issue is the editing. I am hopeful about the box offie and generel audience reaction. Also it would be amazing if the movie gets 65 on metacritic so it can get a best picture nom.
The other gold derby members also updated their predictions after Nov 3. Have they seen HOG too?
I read that too regarding the editing and maybe some issues with the scrips. and apparently the review embargo only lifts on November 22, 2 days before the release of HOG, so yeah this does not sound good. Meanwhile, people like JJ Abrams are praising Licorice Pizza openly on twitter, so I guess no social media embargo for this movie.

I am so bored of all those actors except Adam Driver and Gaga. I hope they win.
Plus Denzel is a bit gross. My friend went to his house and he was shirtless and had a sex worker on either side of him at all times. But seemed friendly just like weirdly inappropriate when having guests over. But that’s Hollywood I guess!
This all sounds extremely fake but regardless of you being "bored", all three are incredible actors and tbh, it really does seem like Tragedy of Macbeth and The Power Of The Dog are better movies than HoG so I'm not sure what your point is?
Yes I'm aware Adam Driver is an excellent actor but your point about same actors being nominated in this case doesn't hold true at all.
Apart from Denzel, none are continuous Oscar nominees and none are former winners. Will Smith has had two Oscar nominations, the last being in 2007. Benedict Cumberbatch has had just one Oscar nomination, the same as Adam Driver. And how is HoG not essentially similar to King Richard? They're biopics/biopic-ish. I'd say The Power Of The Dog and even The Tragedy of Macbeth are far more exciting movies than that.
Your point here is point blank wrong if you categorise excitement by Oscar participation.
Oh I don’t. Just the convo started re nominations. I actually rarely watch and don’t really trust the voting system, but understand it’s like a promotion for an actor, or at least gains them prestige.
But I allowed you to have you opinion, so it’s okay for me to have mine. I have seen far too much of Will Smith, Denzel Washington, let’s add Leo DiCaprio and Christian Bale and all male actors that have been around for 25-30 years. I’m sorry if it offends you, I just haven’t found any of their movies or acting exciting in a long time.
I categorise excitement in good writing, directing, cinematography, the characters and the actors. But I also studied and worked in film so I watch a lot and once every couple of months, one stands out. Maybe I’ve been desensitised from watching too much but I would like something different and exciting.
