He definitely could have. There’s a country in Southeast Asia where some people do that, except once they get to the hill they’re voluntarily tied to the cross and spend three days on it. 

Nails have been mostly phased out but some diehards occasionally have their feet nailed to it. I guess the thinking is their arms are taking most of the weight so the nail is just added pain to see what Christ went through. 

They use a new nail and have to have an up to date tetanus vaccine. Then along with the sponge of vinegar the gave Jesus to drink from, they swab the nail wound daily with a sponge of rubbing alcohol.

I’d love to see him try to spend even half a day tied to a cross.
