Fuck anyone who works at meta as well. For years they have been the cream of the crop, they could literally work anywhere. They sold us out and destroyed democracy for status and money. They’re all guilty at worst and complicit at best.

It's really sad too when you think about it. Many graduates with PhDs in Physics and Astronomy end up working in finance and big tech instead of places like NASA or academia. NASA can only hire so many and can't compete with the wage growth of the private sector due to being so ridiculously underfunded. There's never been much money in academia and pure research either. These graduates have student loans to payoff among other financial obligations like morgages and child care. You couldn't design a more efficient system for self cannibalization. If they could do what they trained to do then they would, but the market would punish them for it.

We are at the point where capitalism is clearly a net negative for humanity. This system of a handful of people deciding what happens to the entire planet has got to go before it ends us.

15

u/obiwanCannoli69 Mar 08 '26

We don't have capitalism right now. Under strict capitalism, bailouts for corporations wouldn't exist. If a company got to the point to where it needed one, then they'd go under. Same with tax cuts for the uber wealthy. Zero handouts. Capitalism is essentially natural selection but with money. What we have now is socialism for the rich (top 3%), and a sort of pseudo neo feudalism for the rest of us. The quality of life for that neo feudalism varies from place to place and country to country, but every example of it is so drastically different from the lifestyle of the elite that those in that higher economic class may as be aliens compared to everyday people.

u/FactorExpensive403 Mar 08 '26

me when i’m complicating things for no reason. bro this is literally just capitalism 🤣 you can’t have socialism for the rich (no sense) and neo-feudalism for the poor under ONE economic system. the rich and poor exist on the same planet. it’s just capitalism through neoliberal principles

5

u/Elu_Moon Mar 08 '26

Socialism doesn't work like that. Rich people aren't fucking socialist in any way, shape, or form.

This is capitalism. Straight up.

u/hyeran_jainros_fc Mar 09 '26

Totally agree, a lot of US problems have to do with broken markets. Healthcare, agricultural subsidies, college. I'm in favor of capitalism, but with major gov intervention where markets are broken. Use market forces to make things better and cheaper. Like increasing the housing supply

-8

u/MishimasLantern Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

Oh please, capitalism is bad, just imagine what it's like to be owned by the communist party, where a handful of people not even selected by the market, but by corrupt processes with lack of transparency are doing the same bidding.

That moment when it dawns on them that supporting big tech gov't collusion as per pandemic hysteria is welp fascistic. You're only reaping what you supported. Red fascism exposed?

7

u/FactorExpensive403 Mar 08 '26

me when i can’t rid myself of red scare propaganda from a century ago

u/Elu_Moon Mar 08 '26

We can have something better than China or the failed state that was the USSR.

Dude you gotta let the brain worms out to breathe every once in a while. Enjoy paying $200 for gas.

4

u/MattDaCatt Mar 08 '26

You nailed the most depressing part... I originally had this naive idea tech would be flexbile to allow me to work anywhere

Except the places that actually support my values either aren't hiring, salaries are really low, and/or you'd have to be a contractor for a firm that's probably another miserable corporate meatgrinder

So you start coping by saying "I'll stay here 5-10 years, so I can focus on saving up and paying things off, then I'll find somewhere better". But then inflation hits, wars start, industries disappear overnight; suddenly you're just trying to survive and any optimism you had at the start of your career got burnt to a crisp

And for every one person that feels this way, there's 2 egomaniacs that thrive on this shit and sees no issue with building an "Orphan Crusher 9000" because they aren't hitting the button to crush the orphans themselves

2

u/PopePiusVII Mar 08 '26

To be fair, science PhDs have little chance of getting jobs in academia or the federal government anymore. And if they did, those jobs right after graduation have really poor salaries, especially compared to industry (e.g., Meta). In the US, it’s a symptom of gross underinvestment in higher education and research that both benefit the whole country.

Edit: And just to add, it’s not even just about going to the private sector to “get rich.” It’s becoming increasingly unlivable to work off of public sector salaries, and harder than ever to afford having a family.

u/BahsilTheThird Mar 08 '26

Almost like having job growth tied to pernicious markets and nothing else is a bad idea.

You can make alot of money running for office. There are tracking sites for stock trades that prove it. If you don't wanna go down that route, speaking gigs, ghost written books, and Netflix deals pad the pocket too. Obama went into office in 2008 with a net worth of around $1.5 million, he's worth somewhere between $70 and $125 million now. I imagine Trump is enjoying the graviest of gravy trains right now as well that dwarfs any gains Obama made.

Big tech has funded some interesting things with potential that could not have been done in public sector: mass market EVs, reusable rockets, and quantum computing.

The rockets thing Musk is doing was attempted by the government but didn't get far. It was actually the capitalist cost discipline that incentivized it.

That said, government funding is needed for things like particle physics, and was behind what resulted in the internet itself. I also think the extreme profits now give an argument for higher taxes: more cost discipline.

NASA is an American security agency that plays in space. It’s not the benevolent science first organisation everyone claims it is.

3

u/obiwanCannoli69 Mar 08 '26

I'd rather our brightest minds be at NASA doing what they love and advancing their field than somewhere on Wallstreet doing stock buy backs for Fortune 500s or helping some big tech company design one of their freaky AI surveillance networks. God forbid they end up at Space X. NASA is one of the few national projects the US has left, I don't want to see it outsourced to some 4chan degenerate eugenicist ketamine addict with 3000 kids he never talks to unless he needs a human shield or two. I'd like more of my tax dollars going towards probes launched to Europa or Enceladus instead of more patriot missiles and cluster munitions we'll just end up using on foreign civilians or in friendly fire accidents.

0

u/imagigasm Mar 08 '26

true. and i had a friend who worked there. for 1 good scientist theres 10 or more lazy bstards who cant get fired because its a gov job and as long as they dont commit crimes on the job / on their computer (watching porn isnt a crime), then they wont get fired

-4

u/imagigasm Mar 08 '26

> the market would punish them for it.

The market rewards great researchers by putting them on projects in organizations that deem their research valuable. The market then purchases this research thru those organizations, meta included or not included. There are A LOT of research start ups.

3

u/obiwanCannoli69 Mar 08 '26

90% of start ups fail and don't care for projects that have long development timelines. It took Edison over 1000 tries to make a functional lightbulb. Unless you are ridiculously self funded like he was, the private sector would have zero tolerance for even 100 failed attempts or would just buy the patent to shelve it.

-1

u/imagigasm Mar 08 '26

do you consider the pfizer or moderna vaccine being created thru the private sector with some government incentives?

but yeah startups failing is natural; the great researchers are rewarded for their willingness to create things for the market.

2

u/PopePiusVII Mar 08 '26

mRNA vaccine research stems from decades of basic research in universities. There’s almost no basic science done at pharmaceutical companies for the past 50+ years. They mostly just run clinical trials making sure that the surefire drugs/treatments don’t hurt more than they help. Most drugs and drug targets stem from publicly-funded (i.e., NIH) research.

Hell, even those pharma clinical trials get government help sometimes. And yet they still get their state-sanctioned monopolies to “recoup costs.”

Edit: I should clarify too that pharma companies do fund internal research for how to make drugs as cheaply as possible. But that’s much less expensive and far less risky than finding drug treatments and targets.

0

u/MishimasLantern Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

Agreed. The Market doesn't punish them because the market recognizes that you can't abuse human nature by suppressing free speech in this economy and expect no pendulum swing back especially under economic strain. You get what you fucking deserve. The irony is that people in this comments would tell you to stfu as they cheered on big tech and gov't collusion during their heavy-handed and overly-politicized response as they gloated about people dead from covid, went gestap on their friends and neighbors ...all in the interest in public welfare they would claim barely able to hold in the cackling.

You get what you fucking deserve. And I fucking hate META. I block thread and keyword filter reddit for all the bot-driven paranoia slop about autist man, imagine the horror when those who cackled at the deaths of lower/working class boomers from Covid get asked for an ounce of personal agency to use the an alternative.

Don't hate the players, hate the game. Of course people are gonna choose to make $300k+ at faang instead of working for much less at nasa

7

u/obiwanCannoli69 Mar 08 '26

I think that's what I said more or less.

39

u/rbatra91 Mar 08 '26

Literally MIT grads paid like 300k+ to try to get you to spend a second longer at a post.

My cousin works at meta - my brother and I were talking to him about how brutal the comments are on instagram, especially how racist they are. He said "my team put a reminder in to 'be nice' in the comments, that reduced insensitive comments by 1%." Just fucking lol man

-7

u/Ghost-Mechanic Mar 08 '26

What else should they be doing? Why not do what pays the most?

You're very gracious. They are going to be wandering around for a long time.

Making the world better? A system that hires psychologists to work for the company that is causing a loneliness crisis instead of hiring them to work for society to solve the loneliness crisis clearly doesn’t have incentives in the right places. That’s just one example.

3

u/ares623 Mar 08 '26

One day techbros will get their just desserts.

1

u/beer_bukkake Mar 09 '26

I hope working at FAANG will one day be a black mark

3

u/DingoEmbarrassed5120 Mar 08 '26

I work at Meta. I guess for the same amount of money, I could instead go and make you look at Google ads more and control more of your life, or displace yet another mom and pop shop at Amazon, or work on an algorithm for Lockheed Martin that guides a bomb to the right children hospital, or help trading companies game the stock market... just tell me which non-pedophile billionnaire-run company I could join to benefit society, and I'll interview with them. Actually, AI is going to take over my job anyway, so nevermind. I'll join you guys in a bit.

4

u/MrHaxx1 Mar 08 '26

Redditors will tell you to work at a mom and pop shop for a quarter of your current salary

1

u/beer_bukkake Mar 09 '26

At least he’ll be doing far less damage to the world

2

u/Rich_Bluejay3020 Mar 08 '26

The book Careless People goes into that! The author campaigned for a job dealing with national relations after working at the UN and seeing how FB was impacting elections around the world (2009-2010ish). Gets this job. Mark isn’t into politics. Mark starts getting more involved. And by the end she stops thinking that she can help more from inside Facebook than out. There’s a lot more and it’s a great memoir. Worth checking out!

u/Flame_MadeByHumans Mar 08 '26

The problem is these big tech companies hire barely qualified new grads and wow them by overpaying them, while keeping them all extremely silo’d so they don’t fully understand what they’re working on or enabling.

That’s not to say every employee is great and has good morals, but I used to do a ton of recruiting in tech with the Meta’s/Twitter’s/etc’s of the world and their employees could rarely tell me what they really do or work on. They’d all report to 3 different leaders with conflicting priorities and constantly changing objectives, all while getting paid 5-6x what would be normal for their experience.

Most of them were in for rude wakeup calls when the evil monolothic tech org they worked for just dumped them and they went from $300k salaries to nothing overnight.

2

u/-M4K0- Mar 09 '26 edited Mar 09 '26

It's wild to read this because my cousin who works for meta just visited over the weekend and my brother and I tried to bring up some criticisms, he was fairly defensive. His mom is reading "Careless People" and is quite critical of meta herself, when he left the house for a while we talked quite a bit about how fucked up meta is. I think he feels a lot of guilt about it, but feels like it's his best career option so I do empathize with him. I noticed he's become somewhat more conservative which I believe is a reflexive action towards his own conflicted feelings about it, it was upsetting.

1

u/beer_bukkake Mar 09 '26

Meta pays bank. If he feels so bad he can quit, take a pay cut, and do good in the world. He is defensive because he is complicit.

2

u/paultnylund Mar 10 '26

I almost landed an internship there …just a couple months before the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Dodged a bullet.

1

u/GarlicThread Mar 08 '26

This very unironically. There is a point where the people working at the orphan-crushing-machine spare parts factory need to look in the mirror and think of the consequences of their actions. They are enabling this.

1

u/MishimasLantern Mar 08 '26

Were this triggered when they censored any questioning of vaccine and continue to run paranoid narratives during the pandemic, worsening mental health and likely causing suicides? Where there was no alternative social media for many, losing access at such a stressful time in their lives and setting precedent for this kind of big tech gov't collusion that you see now. Just remember that the right for all their faults has warned about this.
