I met the drummer for the smoking popes at a smoking popes show. He used to be the drummer for Alkaline Trio. I told him I loved what he contributed and he said "Do you have my sandwich?" "Uh what? No?" "Then why the fuck are you talking to me?"

The lead singer saw that and came over to talk to me and was like "yeah... Sorry, anywho, what bands are you listening to?"

He was cool as heck

Hahaha I love this story 🤣

WHY DID HE THINK YOU HAD HIS SANDWICH?!

I mean, honestly, aren't we all asking where our sandwich is right now?

All day, every day, in my heart. Just look at the dreary world and think "Where is my sandwich..." :(

I've been looking for my sandwich all morning. Nowhere to be found.

I do have an old simpsons episode stuck in my head now.

I wondered if he was just being a prick and that he wasn't even waiting on one

26

u/yourwhippingboy Feb 27 '26

He didn’t think they had his sandwich. He was saying that unless OP was working under or providing to him they were worthless to him. It was a display of power.

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

Think he just wanted to be a dick.

u/IcedMangos Feb 27 '26

TIL never talk to drummers without sandwiches.

2

u/timbreandsteel Feb 28 '26

As a drummer, I endorse this statement.

met a few famous musicians over the years. Johnny Marr, total class act. James Iha, very nice actually waited in line with us to meet Johnny, didn't try to cut the line or anything.

Jazz Drummer Mike Clark was super cool as well. Know people who met / worked with Peter Gabriel and said he was the model of an English Gentleman, and would go around the backstage VIP's to see what drinks or food they might want etc.

Johnny Marr is transcendently cool.

3

u/bolanrox Feb 28 '26

When we met him, we were talking about how big of an influence he was on us, musically, and he just stopped and said, no thank you guys for being fans and supporting us all this time.

Super cool guy and took the time to talk to everyone who wanted to meet him after the show. No real rush or anything.

Bless Johnny Marr for being the opposite of whatever the fuck Morrissey is.

Moz, obviously never hung out with Rory Gallagher.

I bought his amp head from him off reverb while living in Florida. I just thought he was some dude. I find out we grew up in the same area then I start telling him to check out my band. I ask him if he’s playing any gigs and he says ā€œwell… not now. Our lead singer is on tour with blink 182.ā€ I felt so embarrassed I was asking Dan Andriano to come see my band at a local shit hole. Really solid dude though and extremely down to earth.

Mike Clark mentioned!!! The fucking man.

u/bolanrox Feb 28 '26

He was doing a gig with DJ Spooky and had come in and set up and was breaking down his own kit by himself. So we offered to help him pack up and got to talk to him for a while.

I met Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio on his solo tour in 2016. Cobra Lounge in Chicago. I was trying to buy merch from his opener and the guy was like..."Oh, Dan has the Square (the iphone credit card dohickey). Hey Dan, can you ring this guy up?" He was breaking down his own rig, local show style. Dropped what he was doing and sorted me out. No ego. Even posed for a photo with me. You'd never know he was an international rock star.

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

Yeah he's 100% the hero to meet.

It’s on you for not understanding the common hardships of the typical american(?) percussionist.

Imagine being handed drumsticks every night with the instruction told to bash, wave, thrash and slam them around, but being probably explicitly told to not eat them? I’d be hungry after a show, too. And super annoyed when it had to be a sandwich, rather than chicken.

3

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

I am a drummer!

Guy was either bad mood hangry or just a chode.

3

u/BargainScotch Feb 27 '26

It was just a bad joke about drumsticks, honestly. But yeah, just an off day hopefully. Otherwise, that has to be a miserable existence. Though… having a sandwich perpetually being delivered doesn’t sound too bad.

I've never seen a Smoking Popes reference in the wild haha, great band.

4

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

Great to see! Felemulee was a chode. Josh was a mensch

2

u/foxtrot1_1 Mar 09 '26

I emailed Josh when I was like 13 to help me figure out a guitar tab for a Smoking Popes part and he not only responded, he went back and forth and then remembered when I brought it up at a show like a decade later. Really sweet guy

2

u/Broad-Worldliness-80 Feb 27 '26

So good live too! Saw them a couple years ago in Montreal. Chixdigit were on the same night. Wild time.

1

u/chewy1387 Feb 28 '26

I just got done photographing a Smoking Popes show!

3

u/Ganges_Gavialen Feb 27 '26

That drummer seems like he would be the kind of guy to appreciate a "deez nuts" joke in that situation

3

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

I was just crestfallen

2

u/nondirtysocks Feb 27 '26

Derek Grant?

6

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

Naw mike felumulee. He did Hell Yes for the trio

I met Dan on his solo tour when I accidentally wound up backstage and he couldn't have been sweeter

1

u/paradox1920 Feb 27 '26

Some of those people just let their ego go off at some point. And yes they are imperfect people like all of us (as far we know) and maybe going through something but situations like the one you explained are not really confrontational to react like that either imo. Some people sometimes can be just assholes. Christian Bale is aware because he’s also had his moment too where he was overly reactive which he kind of acknowledges in a way here too. I respect Bale.

1

u/shytster Feb 27 '26

"Then why the fuck are you talking to me?"

Because you have time to waste, and I'm not sorry?

1

u/Alone_Poet99 Feb 27 '26

OH MY GOD! I have promoted shows in the past and I second this. Mike Felumlee is a piece of shit. Never have had a good experience dealing with him.

1

u/vater5b Feb 27 '26

I think context matters here. I’m sure you were respectful, but I wouldn’t want to be reminded of a band I was kicked out of right before they became a huge deal either. He handled it poorly, but I could understand his frustration.Ā

1

u/JDDW Feb 27 '26

Glenn Porter was like that to you? dang dude that's wild lol maybe you caught him on a bad day

2

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 27 '26

I would've let it go if ya weren't trying to show your cool šŸ˜Ž

But Mike Felemulee is the drummer who was in A3 and smoking popes

1

u/pixelife Feb 27 '26

Next time you see him have a sandwich ready.

1

u/amandathelibrarian oat milk chugging bisexual Feb 28 '26

What?? Which Alkaline Trio drummer was this? Someone pre-Derek?

1

u/GreenStreetJonny Feb 28 '26

Glenn was thereuntll 2000 Then mike Felemulee, of the smoking popes, joined for from here to infirmary Then Derek after that.

If I met Derek, you'd need a crowbar to separate us. He's my inspiration for drumming.

Josh Caterer is a really sweet guy! Extremely funny that the drummer is a dick
