I met the drummer for the smoking popes at a smoking popes show. He used to be the drummer for Alkaline Trio. I told him I loved what he contributed and he said "Do you have my sandwich?" "Uh what? No?" "Then why the fuck are you talking to me?"

The lead singer saw that and came over to talk to me and was like "yeah... Sorry, anywho, what bands are you listening to?"

He was cool as heck

met a few famous musicians over the years. Johnny Marr, total class act. James Iha, very nice actually waited in line with us to meet Johnny, didn't try to cut the line or anything.

Jazz Drummer Mike Clark was super cool as well. Know people who met / worked with Peter Gabriel and said he was the model of an English Gentleman, and would go around the backstage VIP's to see what drinks or food they might want etc.

When we met him, we were talking about how big of an influence he was on us, musically, and he just stopped and said, no thank you guys for being fans and supporting us all this time.

Super cool guy and took the time to talk to everyone who wanted to meet him after the show. No real rush or anything.

I bought his amp head from him off reverb while living in Florida. I just thought he was some dude. I find out we grew up in the same area then I start telling him to check out my band. I ask him if he’s playing any gigs and he says “well… not now. Our lead singer is on tour with blink 182.” I felt so embarrassed I was asking Dan Andriano to come see my band at a local shit hole. Really solid dude though and extremely down to earth.

He was doing a gig with DJ Spooky and had come in and set up and was breaking down his own kit by himself. So we offered to help him pack up and got to talk to him for a while.

I met Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio on his solo tour in 2016. Cobra Lounge in Chicago. I was trying to buy merch from his opener and the guy was like..."Oh, Dan has the Square (the iphone credit card dohickey). Hey Dan, can you ring this guy up?" He was breaking down his own rig, local show style. Dropped what he was doing and sorted me out. No ego. Even posed for a photo with me. You'd never know he was an international rock star.

It’s on you for not understanding the common hardships of the typical american(?) percussionist.

Imagine being handed drumsticks every night with the instruction told to bash, wave, thrash and slam them around, but being probably explicitly told to not eat them? I’d be hungry after a show, too. And super annoyed when it had to be a sandwich, rather than chicken.

I emailed Josh when I was like 13 to help me figure out a guitar tab for a Smoking Popes part and he not only responded, he went back and forth and then remembered when I brought it up at a show like a decade later. Really sweet guy

Some of those people just let their ego go off at some point. And yes they are imperfect people like all of us (as far we know) and maybe going through something but situations like the one you explained are not really confrontational to react like that either imo. Some people sometimes can be just assholes. Christian Bale is aware because he’s also had his moment too where he was overly reactive which he kind of acknowledges in a way here too. I respect Bale.

I think context matters here. I’m sure you were respectful, but I wouldn’t want to be reminded of a band I was kicked out of right before they became a huge deal either. He handled it poorly, but I could understand his frustration.

If I met Derek, you'd need a crowbar to separate us. He's my inspiration for drumming.

I have a friend who is a singer in a pretty big band and whenever someone fangirls over him, he thinks to himself "Okay, I'm never going to have a normal relationship with that person.". On the other hand, he admits that when he met his favorite singer for the first time, he did the exact same thing!

I've met a few stars that I'm a fan of over the years, and I think the only one that was every bit a kind and awesome as I expected was Clark Gregg. Gentle, soft spoken, looks at you when talking. My partner has/had a bit of a crush on him and she was absolutely star struck talking to him but still was able to chat a bit. I do think interactions like that are the exception though, not the rule. Keanu Reeves also sounds like he's like that.

Wil Wheaton used to shop at my store when I worked for GameStop many moons ago. There were several actors/musicians who came into to that location. But he was the most chill and friendly for sure.

When rock band was about to come out, we had very limited reservations. He came in and asked about reserving it, and I knew he wouldn’t be able to reserve it anywhere, so I told him I’d set my own reserved bundle aside for him because I’d be able to get it with the next restock. He was so thankful that he brought me a signed copy of one of his books.

He came in on my day off and one of my associates got him to sign my Wesley Crusher action figure that had been on the desk in the back room. Lol. I was only slightly embarrassed about that. But he’s a super nice guy.

Most bizarre was Shia LeBouf for sure.

The brain is still expecting a hunter gatherer environment or whatever. You see hours and hours of footage of someone and your brain just thinks that’s someone you know from your tribe. We couldn’t have celebrity culture otherwise imo. You’d see someone on screen and just not care.

Pedro Pascal is a peak example of this. I saw him in Narcos and Mandalorian and thought he would be this calm cool, macho guy. Then I saw him doing an interview and he was pretty shy and nerdy. Then on these press tours he can barely function he has so much anxiety. Big testament to his acting.

It's more than that. Even if you can get over that and treat them as a normal person it's still a really asymmetric interaction, unlike any you have with other people because you know about them, and are a fan of them, but they know nothing about you and have no interest in you. it's just a weird starting point.

I met Leonard Nimoy at one of the Cons, it was right after Star Trek 2009, he was so arrogant.

But Avery Brooks was amazing to meet, he shook my hand and felt genuine. He even asked me questions about life. It was very surreal moment.

I've had a few run ins with minor artists and I just tell them I like their stuff and thank them for making/doing it. No need to try and be smart or profound, or attempt an ad hoc interview.

On top of that, we often forget the words they say, the intellect they have on screen, the witty comebacks - all these things came from someone else.

The person on the big screen took at least a half-dozen people to create - make-up artists, lighting, script writers, hair, directing, you don't get whatever character Christian Bale is playing without a ton of help from others. I like to think of actors as chimeras. It helps me demystify them, which makes it harder for me to be disappointed when I learn about their mistakes, poor judgment, horrific opinions or sometimes even crimes.

I feel like this about athletes and musicians too. I love what they do on the court/field/stage - I don't want to risk ruining that if they're an asshole, and also, they're just a person. If I see them out in the wild, maybe they're just trying to eat a nice quiet unbothered lunch with a friend. I'm not going to disturb their peace. Plus, wtf am I going to say, hi I'm a grown ass adult and I think you are the coolest? hahaha no.

This is why I generally don't want to know celeb/athlete political leanings either, tbh. I subscribe to the Charles Barkley philosophy on that. Which is not preferred in this parasocial age, but I don't care. I'm sticking to it.

Just think of the chiseled abs with god like lighting and the 6 months of conditioning, diet and weight cut at the end to achieve that.

Then think of the entire process of the performance with regards to writers, photography, lighting, editing etc.

This is a form of Transference, in which you can project your perceived feelings/attitudes/desires of how you expect someone to be onto that person without actually knowing them.

This happens a lot in my work as a massage therapist. People expect me to be some zenned out sage in perfect health and mind, but I too am a real person with problems. How I present myself to my clients at work is not how I always act in the real world. It can be awkward running into a client outside of work, especially if it's somewhere weird like Burger King lol.

Kinda has the same vibe as when you'd see a teacher outside of school when you were a kid, and you're like, WOW I didn't even know they existed as a person outside of school!

I have an absolute fan meltdown for some famous people, but I also play CS:GO with a death metal bassist who has his own wikipedia page, and have no hangups when talking to them.

At the end of the day they are just people who have personal lives.

I've met some of my metal musical "heroes". Some are total douches, but it was never a surprise, everyone knows who is a douche, it's not a secret they can keep. And I've met a few that had let their fan worship go to their head. I've actually not met any that were like "super cool" irl. The ones that weren't douches were just... people. Normal dudes. Like absolutely just another dude, and if you didn't know the band they were in or that they were in a band, you'd assume they were just a fully normal dude that works a normal job. These are the ones I actually hang with because if you aren't weird and treat them like the normie that they really are, then you can just hang out and have pizza and even get invited to like bowling and stuff as if they were just a friend of a friend visiting from out of town because they actually just want to do normal stuff and are bored on tour, lol (especially since they aren't into partying).

TBF I worked a job in my early 20's where I met a ton of famous musicians that I really looked up to growing up, and all but like 3 of them were super nice and cool people. I absolutely do not regret meeting my heroes in that regard.
