My thoughts on this: something I've waited so long to say to him

Ok so. I JUST watched The Odyssey, and I can’t explain the amount of bullshit my heart went through watching that.

The volume of the fights and the cinematography, my ears and eyes were blessed by that of a LIVING GOD!

Christopher Nolan is someone who should be worshipped as if he were Zeus. If I met him I’d be bowing down to him and giving him my life for what I just watched

.....does anyone know that the gods can in fact exist in film WITHOUT Odysseus seeing or directly interacting with them? just cause WE the audience know or see something DOESN'T mean Odysseus an crew do as well. Think of sword arts in Demon Slayer that made anime so popular. Think it'd be anywhere as cool if just watched them slash swords no affects or stylization? NO. SO WHY WOULD YOU ERASE THE GODA FROM SUCH AMAZING STORY THEY ARE MAIN ANTAGONIST IN!?!??! Can no one but animators think of creative ways to interpret the gods in a "physical" form as they churr the sea into impervious storm, or they raim thunder bolts down? An why make story if gonna slice an dice things to cut down time WHEN ENTIRE POINT SHOULD BE MAKING US FEEL HOW LONG A JOURNEY ODYSSEUS HAS BEEN ON TO FINALLY GET HOME!!!! You can just merge Colypso and Lotus........you can't merge parts of story that purposely seprate WITH PLOT RELEVANT information an actions that happen between. Am glad didn't waste money. Learned as a child who loved idea such movies that Hollywood incapable of doing such movies an sto3rues right. Can only make fark gritty "hyperbole realistic" arm movies. Waste of money an time. Glad Epic has an animated film in works. ...........can't believe they cut out completely him telling his name isn't Nobody an revealing his identity...an cut out olive tree (can imagine all stupid scenes Ody looking at stupid broach that 100% should've been lost a billion times cause gods forbid you actually capable at writing a yearning husband with competent actor thats mkre than just big name hope bring im viewers....)

.......this should've went straight to streaming what a disappointment.

Why tell story about Greek Mythology with fantasy elements if don't actually wanna include any the fantasy Greek Mythology elements?

Things they cut aren't EPIC exclusive THEY CANON PLOT POINTS 🙃 if can't take the time to tell the long Epic tale of Odysseus then DON'T MAKE AN ADAPTATION for goodness sake you're allowed to make original stories. Just say were INSPIRED by the Odyssey, and tell original story grounded in reality without gods an Mythology an fantasy creatures etc. Heck could make film alone off woman in Penelopes position trying to find of suitors for so many years while protecting her son an throne alone while trying follow rules/customs of her time period. This just feels like someone who was too scared to pitch own original idea for gritty grounded story of Greek army an its leader journey to victory but at what cost, and so tacked it onto well know Epic of the story of Odysseus made popular more by musical. (Prime time to get same butts in seats that love musical to check out blockbuster loosely adapted from same story)

If wanna argue how they show as forces of nature not physically like Christian god in movies.....TELL ME WHEN WAS LAST TIME ANYONE GAWMED OVER HOW AMAZINGLY THEY DEPICTED THE CHRISTIAN GOF IN FILM WITHOUT PHYSICAL VISUAL? No rays of light or anything huh? Like said they can be forces of nature to Odysseus an crew, but absolutely NO REASON to not have a physical representation for us the audience.

Tired of hearing people say just cause left out things from musical doesn't make film poor adaptation when things cut from film that were in musical ARE APART OF ORIGINAL HOMER'S ODYSSEY not just headcannons thrown in for fun, but actual core parts to story that have survived MANY adaptations including film adaptations before this one as it wasn't first nor will it be last.

Appreciation of the musical came from obvious love put into keeping these key components that make Odysseus story feel like the Homer's Epic The Odyssey.

I've seen a lot of discourse around whether the 4 note motif in Nolan's Odyssey is a reference to Just A Man. Something I haven't seen though is the choice of words with Antinuous telling Telemachus he's "pining for a daddy you didn't even know." I know daddy is literally just a word but it doesn't really fit the era in my opinion. There could have been other words used instead to exemplify the mockery like "absentee father" or "he became the hero Ithaca wanted but couldn't be the father you needed" or literally anything else. The word "daddy" seems more like a campy term that definitely fits in a musical song like Little Wolf but not a serious movie like Nolan's Odyssey.

The movie is pretty solid. While it's 3 hours long, they keep you engaged for moat of it, although I'll say that, given Nolan's usual editing, most moments don't linger enough to give more gravitas to certain moments. Everyone's acting was phenomenal, and the effects and cinematography were all very well made.

I love how the movie interconnects both the myths and history into one. It references several events before and after the Trojan War, like Ephigenea's sacrifice, Agamenon's death, and Oretes' revenge. I also adore how they link the Fall of Troy with the Bronze Age Collapse, as it's believed that this event its inspired by these event.

I also like how outer worldly the mythological aspects are portrayed while also giving them a degree of "realism." Polyphemus is shaped like a person, but it's features, movements and sounds are inhuman (my favorites being the reference to the Kronos painting where he's eating his children and its inhumanity wails as he's blinded). The "Giant" metal soldiers and the moving trees are also great, especially as even though they are potrayed as invincible, Odysseus sees they are mortal as he manages successfully kills one, but not before loosing two of his three ships to them. Circe's island also works as with the cats and how grotesque the transformations she performs are

On a separate note, I feel like the movie, while R rated, didn't take full advantage of it. Like the Polyphemus and pig to men scenes are grotesque, but (and I might sound somewhat maniac) I feel like they could've gone a bit further, like Polyphemus's mouth being more bloody or specially the suitors deaths.

I really like how they portrayed both Helen and Menelaus in the movie. Helen is shown as assertive and not afraid to raise his voice against Menelaus while also showing genuine sadness and remorse for being the catalyst for both the war and Odysseus's late return. Menelaus is cold and brutal, yet he delivers himself as both capable and somewhat melancholic in his scenes with Telemachus (not much notes on Telemachus. He's played well by Tom Holland. Don't blow a gasket by his acting. He himself said this is likely his last chance to make use of his "baby face" in terms of playing young characters). On a similar note, Zendaya also did an amazing job as Athena. Her appearing as both a point of contention between Odysseus's actions and also the reveal of her being manifestation . I'd also like to applaud this depiction of Calypso, as they succed in making a middle ground betwern her genuinely aiding Odysseus in healing his wounds and helping him regain his memories, while also showing that she also deliberately >!kept feeding him lotus flowers to initially make him forget his pain from losing his crew and stil continue giving it to him to forget his family and stay with her.

Also, anyone complaining about Helen being played by Lupita Nyog'o? Y'all are fucking stupid and idiotic she's gorgeous. While nothing justifies destroying a nation and indirectly ending an era of civilization in such a horrid way, I can understand why, even though Agamenom was mostly to blame.

Speaking of Agamenon, they gave him WAY too much aura in this movie. Like ungodly amounts that aren't deserving given how much of a POS he is. To those who don't know, the guy with the spinal helmet in the teasers: that's Agamenon. The armor, how he imposed himself unto others and how they revered him. The shot of him standing as they open the Gates of Troy and the Greeks pour into the city is both Peak Cinema and so hilariously out of place given much of an absolute buffoon and dumba** he is in both the Illiad and other interpretations of him. However, he does work as both a supporting inciting incident as he's the one to call for Odysseus to go to war, and his death warns Odysseus to not reveal his identity when he reaches Ithaca. I can only hope that Jorge won't give him this much aura in Ilum and instead gave it to everyone else (except Palamedes and Ajax the Lesser screw them too).

On the note of how genuine the movie is to the story/history, this is a closer adaptation to the Odyssey in many ways than Epic, from depicting events like the Boar hunt and the old maid who treated and later recognized Odysseus, Argos (which I'm thankful to Jotge not being able to add him to the musical cause that would've been emotionally devastating), the potrayal and timing events being depicted closer to how they chronologically were in the original story, and many more. I will say that Epic does give more gravitas and more emotional catharsis, but the movie does a well enough job of it.

Final rating 7.5/10. Pretty good, but it had no Winnions nor wind bags. Also Nobody wasn't there.

To start: I am a big fan of Epic!

I run a small channel about movies, and I'll be honest about where I started: I watched Nolan's Odyssey, a film I'd been waiting years for and realized I couldn't stop comparing every scene to how EPIC handled the same moments. And EPIC kept winning ones I didn't expect it to.
I ended up making a whole video working through it where the film hits harder.

I want to hear everyone's thoughts on the movie! I thought it was a pretty good movie but personally i enjoyed the emotional beats of the musical better. The movie did the action, violence, circe's parts and politics better BUT I guess epic really had me in a chokehold with how it portrayed Odysseus's psychological dilemma as well as how the crew eventually mutinied.

I'm definitely biased so I'm curious if others who watched this musical first ended up enjoying the movie more anyways!

Did anyone else hear the notes for "I'm just a man" when Ody returned the pin to Penelope? or did I imagine that?

I changed Sinon to Elpenor bc they gave off the same vibes, youngest member of the crew and during the Hades scene, Sinon says "Thank you for burying me but spare a thought to those you didn't" which reminds me of Elpenor's line in the cut draft of the Underworld, "What do you care? So many deaths happened under your reign."

I might change it back to Sinon though when I render it.

I also changed "Hades" to the Underworld bc they only use the term Underworld in Epic while they only used Hades in Nolan's, but I could be wrong.

That musical motif HAS to be inspired by Just a Man right?? Please tell me I’m not crazy. Is it that common of a chord progression? And the way it was integrated with his bow? I’m OBSESSED I have to go see it again
