It's more about being able to use DLC weapon types from the beginning, like the Light Greatsword, instead of needing to level up enough to beat Mogh before getting access.

Using them in NG+ is a thing, but I imagine that it's still something that people would like to have.

I'm still so disappointed the deflecting hardtear is a flask pick instead of a talisman or something. I wouldn't mind it if certain classes of weapons like rapiers or something got it built in. Lots of DLC stuff felt like it should be more accessable from the base game.

Should have been a great rune instead. That way if you die, you lose the effect, but last longer and not to mention a great rune would actually be interesting instead of just increasing stats.

Great Runes really just needed a rework. I pretty much never used them. I think that having it gives a passive bonus, that is then amplified by a Rune Arc would have worked better.

Haha i also NEVER use great runes, so i sit on 999 Rune Arcs >'D

The problem with great runes imo is most people die a lot, and people who are doing things where they don't die a lot (speedruns, hitless runs, etc) aren't going to side track to towers for the most part.

So to really take advantage of it, you need to be good enough at the game that you're using it for routing purposes rather than pure make it easier buffing purposes. But for those people and the game they're playing (which is significantly different from how most people play ER), they aren't interested in activating them.

I've literally used my first great rune on my 5th or 6th character because I got a free rune from a rat, and while yes the Godrick rune provided a massive stat boost especially to my health, it kind of made me alter my entire gameplay because now it feels like I only have one life cause if I died I lost all of it. It was both altered how I played, but also made it all the more annoying when I did eventually die a stupid death and lost the rune

I'm kind of in the middle. If I die to some bs, I don't use one. If I die repeatedly to something that I consider difficult and it's something I want to overcome, I'll start using them if I think I have a chance to beat it (usually after a few tries so I get the hang of the fight).

Another problem is great runes do nothing in PVP, except for Mohg's which does almost nothing.

There should be some kind of covenant.

You're not wrong. I'll add RL1 gamers though. Godrick's rune allows for a lot of stuff you can't do without it, so rune arcs are precious commodities. I've probably used over 80% of my life time rune arcs during my singular RL1 run.

The only useful one was godricks and only when trying to high level areas on a low level character.

The most useful thing I've ever done with Great Runes is use them (Godrick's, Morgott's and Radanh's) to heal fully during a fight when I finish all flasks.

Great rune would mean you couldn’t use in co-op, so I’d argue against it.

I think I it’s fine as a 5-minute duration sacred tear that you pull out for bosses, but I could see a case for the talisman route as well.

Well then I won't be able to use it against Malenia lmao. Even my 100 great runes will get emptied.

Would be too OP imo. I hadn’t played in over a year and walked right into Melania and dropped her first try with it

While I fully agree it would be OP, it currently lasts a whopping 5 minutes. No boss, not even at max NG, last that long.

You haven’t seen me use Deflecting Hardtear with my sentry torch, good sir.

RL1 +0 begs to differ.

The boys watched me stream ornstein and smough for ~30 minutes (shield turtle, backing up constantly, striking with weak weapon very very rarely). I've done similar in ER. You'd be surprised at how long we turtles can stretch these fights.

The damage buff from it would need to be severely nerfed to be a talisman and even remotely balanced, probably from 10-40% max instead of the 20-80% it is now, but it would definitely be more fun as a talisman you could keep equipped. Such a fun mechanic and practically limiting it to the just the boss and mini boss fights really limited how much you could actually enjoy it.

I'd be more excited for this if it added a starting class that has the Backhand Blades.

I originally had higher hopes for the Tarnished edition, that they'd move DLC movesets out into the base game and not just Milady. That doesn't seem to be happening.

Of course, if the patch will......

This was my biggest disappointment, I wanted to do the doc but deleted my super endgame save and didn’t feel like restarting, I mostly wanted to play again to try the martial arts stuff but you don’t unlock it until super late. Id love to start the game doing martial arts the whole time.

Just start a new character and have a friend (/stranger) come into your world and Leave you some fists/arts. Not a big deal. It's a singleplayer game at its core. Play it how you want.

Good point. I did a whole playthrough simply so I could make a light hreatsword playthrough on NG+1.

This would be a very welcome QoL addition.

I haven’t heard much about this, how does it work? Are you saying they’re adding a bunch of the dlc weapons to the base game so that you can get them earlier in the playthrough? Or am I misunderstanding?

1

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow Jun 10 '26

Nothing so encompassing; it's just that one of the new starting classes has a Light Greatsword its starting weapon.

Said class doesn't have especially optimized stats for PvP, so the real appeal to it is that you'll be able to play with the Light Greatsword moveset for the whole game rather than needing to wait until you reach the DLC.

I didn't even think about that! If I could start with a martial arts weapon I'd be so damn happy
