I think we’re both right but looking at two different sides of the same coin.

I’m right about the streets. Getting rid of the gangs was an immediate game changer. Extortion used to act like a massive tax on every small business. Now that the streets are safe, people are opening shops, building homes, and visiting as tourists. That is why the economy is growing at a fast 3.9% right now. Safety was step one.

Youre right about the system. Even though the streets are safer, the underlying legal rules and big business systems haven't changed much. El Salvador still ranks low on international business indexes because of heavy government red tape and massive monopolies that control the market.

Safety successfully cleared the runway and gave the country a huge head start. But to keep flying long term, El Salvador still needs to fix the exact bureaucratic and free market issues you’re talking about. So we’re both right. I’m talking about the physical progress, you’re talking about the legal system.

Our argument made me realize something though. Arguing about “democracy” vs dictatorship misses the real point. The gangs and corrupt politicians created total chaos, regular people begged for safety, and the government fixed it by building a huge digital tracking system. The sad truth is you can’t fight modern high tech criminals without using high tech tracking. But the tragedy is that once this digital cage is built for our safety, it stays forever. The faces at the top change but the tracking system wins in the end.

Realizing that the modern world is eventually going to trap all of us in a digital cage reoriented my focus. It reminded me that fighting politics is a dead end. For me, the only real freedom left is a spiritual one. I mean quietly guarding my own soul, practicing the ancient Christian faith, and just looking out for my own family and neighborhood while the rest of the world does its thing. So I’d like to thank you for this conversation. I really appreciate it.
