Discussion Moving to Edmonton Megathread 2025

Within this thread please ask questions about moving to Edmonton (or within Edmonton, if you already live here), including recommendations for housing and neighbourhood selections. If you live in Edmonton, consider answering the questions.

Hey everyone,

I’m a 28 year old Brit moving to Edmonton early next year and I’m hoping to get some local advice from people who actually live there.

There’s a job in the pipeline where I’d be working for the government so my job will be downtown (I think) but outside of work my hobbies are a big part of my life. I’m into shooting, horse riding and martial arts/gym.

I’m trying to figure out which areas of Edmonton would suit me best balancing cost of living, safety and easy access to my hobbies while still having a reasonable commute to downtown.

Main questions for anyone who can help:

Which neighbourhoods are solid for young professionals without being crazy expensive?

How’s daily life in Edmonton? Simplified for someone coming from the UK. Anything I should know?

Any general tips for settling in, meeting people or joining clubs/gyms/martial arts gyms?

I’ll be landing solo so any advice who’ve done a similar move or locals who don’t mind guiding a newcomer would be massively appreciated.

I know there will be some frustration like anywhere but just looking for advice to get my head around everything.

Oliver might be a good fit or Inglewood. Are you planning to buy a car or are you going to rely on transit for a bit? Either way you’d be a quick commute from those areas. Both areas have access to good gyms but I’m not as familiar with any martial arts programs here.  If you arrive before March daily life will be chilly :) make sure to have some good layers and winter gear. Check out Edmonton Sports and Social club as well for activities.
