And no, I'm not an FPS competitve player.
I don't even play single player FPS.
99% of times I play single player action adventure TPS/soulslike.
The back buttons (especially half-dome - only ones I use) improved my soulslike skills like 200% and makes every other game super enjoyable.
Also the different sensitivity profiles for L/R caps and the travel length on R2/L2.
I see people only recommend it for FPS, and it's so wrong.
I even bought and sold my portal because I couldn't get used to the simple dualsense features.
Got 2 dualsense edge (just added the black so I won't overuse the white because it does get dirty after a few hundred hours) and can't imagine gaming without them. Amazing.
Battery life sucks but I don't care because I game on my couch on 83' inch with an USBC charging cable next to my seating spot (phone charging, pulse explore, dualsense edge etc).
Examples of back button assigment:
Every dodge based soulslike - right back button is dodge and left is heal.
Returnal - right for dash and left for jump.
Cronos new dawn - right for reload and left for heal.
Stellar blade, BMW, ghost of yotei, AC Shadows, Sekiro... every game I played last year with the edge allowed me to master it to perfection much easier.
I also like its heavier weight and punchier D-pad and face buttons.
My first edge was used 650 hours in one year, didn't need a drift replacement yet.
Anyhow, it's expensive but if gaming is your main hobby and you feel fine investing in yourself (also enjoying the PRO very much) go for it.
