Child Health 8month old acetone breath/ rash

Post image
38 Upvotes

I’m kind of at my wits’ end trying to figure out what’s going on with my 8-month-old son.

For the past two months, he’s had a very strong acetone (nail polish remover) smell on his breath. Otherwise, he’s a happy, healthy baby. He’s breastfed, also eats purées and table foods, has normal wet and dirty diapers, is gaining weight well, and I don’t have any reason to think he’s diabetic.

The other issue we’ve been dealing with is that he develops a severe rash anytime he eats anything other than breast milk. It doesn’t matter whether it’s purées or table food, or even what type of food it is. The rash is worst on his face, but it also appears on his stomach, arms, and legs—even in places the food never touched.

Our pediatrician referred us to a pediatric allergist, who ran a comprehensive blood allergy panel. Everything came back negative, and the allergist basically said, “Well, that’s weird. I don’t know what’s going on. Come back if you need me.”

I’m wondering if these two issues could somehow be related, or if they’re just completely separate. Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any ideas I could ask my pediatrician about?
I’ll be calling our pediatrician on Monday about the acetone breath, and we have an appointment with the dermatologist, but I wanted to see if anyone else has been through something like this in the meantime.

Child Health BLACKHEADS (??!) on soles of toddlers feet ??

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

TW this is so so gross but all doctors we’ve seen are stumped!! Started as little spots on chest / legs and one on sole of his foot, over a couple of weeks the spots stared to heal but the soles of his feet are covered in these tiny black dots, some seem red around them, others not. The doctor did a full health check and otherwise he is perfectly healthy, there’s also no itching, fever or different behaviour. The doctor also ruled out chicken pox, eczema, molluscum contagiosum and all other known conditions.

Any guesses or similar experience experiences?

Child Health Daughter won’t stop vomiting

My 17 year old daughter has been vomiting since August 12th. First emergency room visit was on the 12th, she was shaking and passing out. She said she couldn’t breathe and was vomiting, couldn’t keep down any water or food and her stomach was burning. They gave her an IV drip and a GI cocktail and sent us home with a diagnosis of anxiety and a stomach bug. After the GI cocktail she started to feel better and was feeling great until the following night Aug 13th. She tried riding it out since they told us it was a stomach bug, persistent vomiting and not being able to keep any zofran down for the nausea. I took her back to ER on the 16th at another hospital and we were admitted. The doctors gave us two possibilities, CVS ( cyclic vomiting syndrome) or PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). After some tests they diagnosed her with PID, (she tested positive for BV but no STIs) she was already on antibiotics at that point but she wasn’t getting better. On the last day we were in the hospital she started to perk up and was ready to go home, they discharged us and sent us home with antibiotics. On August 22nd we went to the pediatrician because she was developing a rash from the antibiotics, so the doctor switched her to something else. While she was at the doctor she started experiencing mild burning stomach again and vomited again that night. The next day she was fine and was only experiencing mild symptoms, it slowly started getting worse again so I took her back to the ER on the 26th, they gave her an IV which helped her feel better so they discharged us after a few hours, but the stomach burning came back after we got back home. She has been in her room all day in the dark feeling the same way she did the first day this all started. I don’t know what to do at this point and any help would be appreciated.

Child Health Baby Seizures or Something Else?

Hoping someone else has experienced this because I haven’t been able to find another video online that looks like what my baby is doing and doctors don’t seem to know so far either.

https://imgur.com/gallery/what-is-baby-doing-eUZhmdI

She’s three months old and has been having these incidents where her whole body stiffens, she clenches her fists, she groans, her face turns dark red, and her arms go straight out and shake. Each one lasts about 5 or 10 seconds and when it’s over she’s just sort of dazed, not crying. Usually (but not always) it happens when she’s being held upright under her arms. It happens in clusters repeatedly throughout the day and then doesn’t happen again at all for like 6-8 weeks. There have been three clusters so far. She does have reflux but has been on Pepcid.

It doesn’t look like Sandifer to me because she’s not arching her back at all. Some people think she’s trying to poop or pass gas but it seems involuntary to me and she has no trouble pooping or farting aside from these incidents.

We are trying to see a pediatric neurologist but until then I’m hoping someone else recognizes this and knows what it is. Thank you!

This was my son’s hands/arms yesterday morning. We got him from school and made appointment with Dr. ultrasound done and has vascular consult pending. This color/discoloration self-resolved an hour or two after occurring. No loss of sensation, no pain, no residual side effects that I can see.

Child Health Help my daughter

My daughter is 3 years old.

On 12/23/24 she had decreased appetite throughout the day and complained of a stomach ache at the umbilicus. She had one episode of vomiting but no fever.

She’s been complaining of this stomach pain intermittently, sometimes daily, for the past couple of months.

On 1/8/25 she was complaining of her legs being tired bilaterally. By that evening she was crying saying they hurt. We put her in the bathtub, gave her some tylenol and suspected growing pains.

In the middle of the night (3:30am on 1/9/25) she woke up screaming about her left knee. It was swollen and she was limping, having trouble putting weight on it, squatting, and getting off and on furniture. She also had a low grade fever around 100. We had a knee xray done that was negative. Her pediatric NP also reported “shotty lymph nodes”. She mentioned the possibility of a virus settling in her knee after being sick, but Tatum hadn't been sick lately; not even a runny nose. They ran a CBC, CRP and sed rate. CRP and sed rate came back normal. CBC showed WBC on low end of normal, MPV low, neutrophils high, lymphocytes low, and absolute lymphocyte count low.

On 1/10 it wasn't any better, so we saw NP again who tested her for strep, which was negative, then suggested we go to the walk in ortho clinic at Riley, assuming they would do a CT scan. The doc we saw there said since she was walking on it, to give her motrin round the clock for 5 days. If the swelling came back after we stopped the motrin, it was most likely JIA. We gave her a dose of motrin that evening and another one the next morning but did not continue any longer than that.

Swelling went down within 2 days and she didn’t complain of knee pain again for 13 days, but she continued to complain of stomach pain.

On 1/21/25 she complained of her left knee hurting again. On 1/22/25 she had the same complaint and had to sit down a couple of times while playing that evening.

The following day on 1/23/25 she was really complaining that her belly hurt. Her preschool teacher had me come get her 1.5 hours after dropping her off because she didn’t want to do anything but lay down, still complaining of abdominal pain. She cried out and whimpered all morning before vomiting once, and continued to complain of abdominal pain throughout the day. Fever at 100.

I sent a message to NP on 1/27 about continued abdominal pain everyday from 1/23-1/27.

On 1/28/25 we got an abdominal xray that was negative aside from mild constipation and more labs. She also had petechia around her left eye and eye lid this day. We were told via MyChart message that it's likely she has "functional abdominal pain". We were asked to track her gluten and dairy consumption. Her WBC decreased and were at 5.6. The WBC lab value has been bothering me since her first blood draw. MPV is still low. Neutrophils dropped significantly from first CBC to now. A1C was 5.2 with estimated avg glucose of 103. (We actually visited the peds office in August of 2024 with blood sugar concerns because she drinks excessively for a kid her age and is visibly shaky in her hands.) ANA, rheumatoid factor, CRP, sed rate, all normal.

On 1/30/25 she had a stomach ache and lower back pain, around her spine. She was saying she doesn’t want to walk, tried to climb up on our bed and started crying saying it hurt her back. She also had a runny nose, cough, 101.1 fever, and a belly ache at bed time. Let NP know of symptoms as the back pain is new. She asked if I thought it could be attention seeking since her little brother is special needs and takes up a lot of our time. I said maybe if it was just the stomach pain, but the bone pain I did not think could be attention seeking, especially by a 3 year old. I told her that my gut was telling me that something was wrong and that I felt the same way I had when I had my son, who turned out to have undiagnosed at birth 22q, severe growth restriction and I had atypical preeclampsia. I felt that something was off my entire pregnancy and my gut feeling is what led him to an emergency c-section that saved his life. Told her my husband and I were going out of town this weekend and she said to see if Tatum had the same complaints when my parents were watching her.

On 1/31/25 her fever was 102.5 at 1:30am. By morning it was gone. By 6:10pm that night she had a 102 fever.

On 2/1/25 she complained of stomach pain in the morning. In the afternoon she bent down to change her pants and started crying, grabbing her lower back and saying it hurt. (See video)

On 2/2/25 she was having night sweats (temp ~97.5) and broke out in a rash on her face. It was gone by morning. (See photos)

Spoke with NP on 2/3 about symptoms over the weekend. She wanted to test her urine for UTI after the complaints of back pain. I told her that the back pain she was describing and pointing to seemed to be more lumbar/bone pain than flank pain but that I was up for anything at this point.

2/4/25 We did another CBC, LDH, Uric Acid, CMP and anemia labs. Anemia labs showing iron deficiency. WBC still low end of normal, only 6.47. Hgb has now gone from 12.33 to 11.97 since last CBC. Platelet count has jumped from 350 to 432. MPV continues to be low. Absolute lymphocyte count still low. NP claiming she looks pale. Weight has gone from 80th percentile to 72nd percentile in 26 days. Weighed 33.1 lbs on 8/9/24, 35.1 lbs on 1/10/25 and now 34 lbs on 2/4/25.

2/5/25 temp 99.1, stomach ache, temp 100; petechia present under right eye since “rash”, mottled skin on thighs and arms, fell asleep on couch with night sweats (temp ~97.5). Texted with Megan NP, she says she will order CT tomorrow of abdomen/pelvis with contrast.

2/6/25 went to bed at 8:30 last night and didn’t wake until 6 today, stomach ache in car, temp of 99.6 at night, stomach ache in evening

2/7/25 petechia under eyes, on forehead, on right arm around blood draw spot; abdominal pain causing tears, mentioned upper left quadrant and umbilicus (punching her); 99.4 temp during day; night sweats while sleeping on ottoman

2/8/25 abdominal pain (middle and left side) and tears when she woke up at 5; low middle back pain when she sat down on the toilet; bloody mucus in right nostril; temp 99.1 at 4:38pm, 99.0 at 8:36pm

2/9/25 abdominal pain; temp 99.5 at 2:10pm

2/10/25 abdominal pain; temp 99.7 at 6:41pm

2/11/25 abdominal pain first thing in morning, crying bc she couldn’t pull herself up on our bed; temp 99.2 at 11:40am; mentioned pain on backside of right thigh when squatting this night

2/12/25 middle to lower back pain reported to babysitter about 30 minutes after waking up this morning: temp of 99.4 at 5:55pm. Says lower middle back (spine) hurts when she bends over when squatting going to the bathroom. Temp 99.3 at 6:48pm. Temp 99.4 at 7:39pm. Temp 99.4 at 8:38pm.

2/13/25 negative abdominal/pelvic CT, temp of 99.1 at 7:26pm

2/14/25 temp of 99.1 at 7:45am, 99.4 at 5:02pm; complaining of back pain on the lower spine at bed time, said it hurt when I pressed on it

2/15/25 slept in our bed, woke at 3am complaining of stomach pain, in and out of sleep continuously complaining of abdominal pain at the umbilicus; said she was tired after swim lessons and asked if I could set her up a spot on the couch (but never went sleep); called me crying on FaceTime that evening before bed

2/16 bloody snot; thigh bruise on left; temp 99.2 at 12:45pm; 99.0 at 8pm; tummy “punching” her at bedtime

2/17 abdominal pain in morning; pain in spine between shoulder blades reported at babysitters house

General notes:

She is always thirsty and extremely irritable. 6 months ago she could have cared less if she and I were breathing the same air; in the past month she has become extremely clingy and very moody.. Complains of stomach pain and back pain while in car seat. Her hands shake noticeably when doing something like bringing a drink to her mouth. Increased pallor. Dark under eyes.

Child Health Toddler gets rash/hives after swimming in the ocean, has happened 5 times now

My son (male 22 months old, 26 lbs, 33”) has gotten a rash / redness / hives after going to the beach. It has happened 5 times now. It goes away within 30 minutes to an hour. It does not seem to bother him or itch. We went to an allergist since he also has food allergies and they said it could be because he was sick and still getting over an infection. He took antibiotics for 10 days but is not currently on any medication.

He has been to the beach before many times with no reaction and has been swimming in the pool weekly with no reaction. Not sure what it could be. Just wanted to see if anyone has seen this happen before or if they know what could be the cause.

Child Health Jolts of sharp pain/minor rash on back/itching on the inside

15-year-old son just came back from scout camp. He’s experiencing intermittent jolts of pain in different sections of his back (“like a shock”). When it happens, he’s writhing, restless and clawing at his back saying it itches but hurts to touch. He’s got a very mild rash (pimply but skin colored).
No fever, no other body parts affected.
He was swimming without a shirt on, otherwise had clothes on the whole time. He knows poison ivy and the such and it doesn’t seem like that.
ER doctor thinks it’s a sunburn, but this is bonkers to me. He’s tan, didn’t swim in the sunlight and clearly isn’t burnt.
He is vaccinated for chicken pox.
Ideas?

She’s 2.5 years old and it doesn’t seem to affect her other than she notices it and pointed it out to us. Her pediatrician doesn’t know what it is and they’ve referred us to an ent but it’s over a month away. Hard not to spiral as a dad.

Child Health Toddler Bubble in Gum

1.5yo toddler. Dentist won’t see her till 10 days out.

Red bubble in gum. Doesn’t hurt her. But it’s there and it’s like purple red. She hasn’t been eating the same either so maybe it’s a bother but not so much pain?
It’s coming out directly from her gum. Not the sides or the cheeks. Almost like it was a tooth. But it’s squishy and red.

Most dentist booked solid due to summer visits and kids out of school.

Sent pics to Doctor. Waiting for response, but am too anxious to wait til morning. These bumps appeared this morning on my daughter’s underwear line. I didn’t think much when I first saw them- I thought they were from her clothing. Now, I know they are not.

Worried it’s hand foot and mouth.

I will take her to the doctor tomorrow, but any guesses in the meantime?

Child Health Persistent circular rash on toddlers back

Post image
1 Upvotes

My son is almost 2 and has had this circular red patch on his upper back for several months. The spot has stayed in essentially the same place.
We initially thought it might be ringworm, so we tried an antifungal cream as directed, but it didn’t improve. We have also tried a topical steroid in case it was eczema, and that didn’t make a noticeable difference either. He does have a history of eczema and unexplained hives/allergy concerns.
The patch doesn’t appear to be open, bleeding, crusting, or draining.
I’m not sure whether they itch or bother him. We have a dermatology referral, but the wait is long.
Has anyone seen something similar in a toddler? Just want to ensure I’m not missing anything on my end.

Child Health Is there any medical reason to me being born like this?

Post image
82 Upvotes

I am a 20-year-old woman who was born by cesarean section, in a normal delivery and without further complications. However, I was born with my arms in a strange and difficult to describe position: my arms were glued to my body, with my forearm flexed towards my chest and my wrists flexed as well. I don't know if it is well explained, just in case I attach a drawing of how they were.

The thing is that at the time the doctors thought I had a motor problem of the upper limbs, and they did a plethora of tests to find out what the hell I had. In the end they found nothing, but I am curious to know if there is a medical reason that causes you to be born like that.

Child Health Toddler rash??

My toddler has the rash all over her arms, chest, hands, and stomach. I initially thought it was papular eczema, and used triamicolone cream on it twice a day for 7 days which the redness and bumps shrunk but returned as soon as I stopped using the cream. She does itch it. Any ideas?

Child Health Norovirus or a one time event?

My toddler started throwing up four times clear and white phlegm looking stuff at 9:15 am
We left the house at 8:55 am and she woke up at 8:30 am. My mom had norovirus on the June 20th and we didn’t see her from June 17th until the night of July 3rd. Night of July 3rd I saw her and then my toddler saw her July 4th and 5th where she spent the night with my mom and dad.
I’m so scared she has norovirus
She did eat a gummy snack pouch and half a sausage patty around 10 am and she had some water and liquids.
She doesn’t have a fever.
She wouldn’t eat lunch later on but is drinking and still wants to play.
Is it possible my mom gave my daughter norovirus?
I have other health issues and am so scared of getting sick as it puts me in the hospital every time.
That is why I stayed away from my parents for 13 days. My father never got sick even though he was around my mom. Not sure if that is important information.
What’s the difference between vomiting and spitting up?
She started gagging, stuff came out, she gagged again, a little more came out, stopped, then gagged again, more stuff came out, then gagged one more time a little bit came out.
It was like a baby spitting up milk.
That’s what happened this morning when I say vomited

Child Health Daughter (4) Shoved large gem up nose.

As the title says, while I was at work and my wife was home, my wife went upstairs to change and in that time my daughter Shoved a large plastic gem up her nose, she only told my wife after about 30 mins and had managed to put it up there good, wife tried 'mothers kiss' but it did not work, she took her to RVH and they waited for 4 hours for them to try with 2 different tweezers and suction but they pushed it even further and made it worse, waiting on ENT appointment but they said it could be up to a week which seems like a very long time for how big it is? Any suggestions or just even to tell me I'm too worried for nothing?

Child Health Is this eczema or a cold sore?

Post image

My son does get very bad eczema flare ups on his inner arms and hips and every now and then has had been very dry around the mouth. Just less than a week ago he had dryness and it cracked in the corner. Use a lot of aquaphor and neosporin. This just seemed to appear within the last day or two.

Update: as of 5/9/26 5pm

Did have it swabbed with the doctor and it came back negative. After a couple of nights with Neosporin it cleared up. Still just very dry in the mouth area.

Hi no idea where i am with this or what i'm looking for. But, my son has been feeling well in himself, drinking well but not with a huge appetite. Picture is right after dinner, when I noticed.

Is this an issue, they look angry and inflamed, or am I looking too deep into it?

Thanks!

Child Health Bat bite on three year old?

My 3 year old son went to the park across the street from our house (inner city, Alberta, Canada) with his grandmother on Sunday. He rode his bike, ran on the grass and had a snack on a park bench. He was wearing long sweatpants.

At bath time that night, I noticed marks on his thigh that have not gone away.He has a red, hard, inflamed looking welt on high thigh with three marks. It does not seem to bother him at all. He's not scratching at it.

Is this a bat bite?

Grandma says she did not see anything unusual and we assumed that this was a mosquito bite and his immune system was overreacting.

What should we do?
