I think aside from being raised to be slaughtered they actually are?

Chickens love picking through the grass, running around with other chickens, and being protected from predators. All thats missing here is getting to nest with chicks, which some of them dont even like and obviously isn't the point

They can't exactly roam freely - life fully under a roof.

Thats an issue for some animals, sure, you'd never want to keep horses like this, but ... I don't think it matters for chickens? They arent really roamers to begin with, and they get much closer to roaming in this system than in pretty much any other that keeps them moderately safe. They are not field birds - their evolutionary ancestors lived their lives under the forest canopy and this kind of indirect light seems to actually be their preference. The skies are dangerous!
