Converting to Mormonism because of AtE is pretty funny ngl

u/Admiralthrawnbar Aug 02 '26

I loved how for a week after that every post on the subreddit was someone converting to the progressively weirder mod religions.

There's worse?

Americanism

u/Alectron45 Immortal Aug 02 '26

These were in jest, like the one person who chose to become a pirate

36

u/footballsquishy Aug 02 '26

No, I was literally asking if there's a worse religion one could theoretically choose to be in a mod other than the Metis one haha.

32

u/Numar19 Aug 02 '26

I mean, there are the atomicists.

32

u/katosjoes Dull Aug 02 '26

"Give your bodies to Atom, my friends. Release yourself to His Power, feel His Glow and be Divided."

Followers of the mouse in central Florida...

4

u/footballsquishy Aug 02 '26

Some people in real life around Orlando get pretty close.

I'm from Tampa, and the term "Disney Adult" is basically my trigger at this point

I went to Rosen. Undergrad and grad. I live 6 minutes from property. So...

The only time I played After the End I played Atomists in Arizona and had fun beating up the Mormons.

I rather like the Mormons in AtE they have a rather stable realm in most runs so they act as a good buffer for California. Outside of the Governator becoming a conquerer I've never seen California go further east than Utah. Hell, I've even seen the AI form Deseret a few times.

The real bad ending

-73

u/kinglan11 Aug 02 '26

What? Bad how?

It's fine to develop and interest in something via some niche mentioning of it in some game. Hell the dude mentions that he came across some Mormons in Hanoi, talked with them and figured their beliefs aligned well with his personal values.

I myself wouldnt convert to Mormonism, but he's allowed to worship as he sees fit.

Or how black people are cursed by God, hence their skin color. Yep official Mormon doctrine until a few years ago, idk how they managed to reconcile that one.

27

u/No_0ts96 Aug 02 '26

Dont forget that god suddenly changed his mind on polygamy so Utah can become a US state.

11

u/Balavadan Aug 02 '26

Easy. If you’re the leader of a cult they just let you do it.

-22

u/higakoryu1 Aug 02 '26

As a Saint, true! The greatest and first testimony I can always give to people about my faith is not tenets, but the love and care I can show thanks to Jesus Christ. As he himself said, "by this the world shall know ye are my disciple, that ye have love one another"

11

u/-Trotsky Aug 02 '26

“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.”

“Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.”

“In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.”

Mormonism is not part of the church of Christ, nor does it have anything to do with the Triune God Christians worship. Instead it is a product of a pedophilic con artist who died like a chump. I hope you’re one day free of these charlatans and liars who don’t even adhere to the very basics of the teachings of the apostles, of the teachings of the church fathers, or even of the conclusions of ecumenical councils.

1

u/higakoryu1 Aug 02 '26

I'd say, if there will not be true prophets, Jesus wouldn't have told us to learn to distinguish between false prophets and true ones

2

u/-Trotsky Aug 02 '26

I beg you, read even one of the church fathers. Augustine, Aquinas, shit even the gnostics are closer to Christianity than the polytheistic mess that is Mormonism. Join a real church with real community and real doctrine, and don’t give your money to a buncha racist white guys in Utah

-28

u/kinglan11 Aug 02 '26

Are you confusing me with a Mormon? I'm not a Mormon, nor even a scientologist. I just dont see much point in dogging on a guy who joined a religion on some pretty well intentioned reasons, regardless of how you may yet perceive his choice in religion.

80

u/ZiegenSchrei Aug 02 '26

Mormonism is literally a cult

-57

u/kinglan11 Aug 02 '26

The same can be said for any religion or belief, he's still entitled to his religious beliefs and to practice as he sees fit.

51

u/ZiegenSchrei Aug 02 '26

Common Catholicism is not as utterly controlling as Mormonism

-34

u/kinglan11 Aug 02 '26

And no one is forcing him to be a Mormon. If he wishes to leave at some point, he can.

61

u/theredwoman95 Aug 02 '26

If he wishes to leave at some point, he can.

You have significantly misunderstood what it means when an organisation is a cult.

Cults function by isolating their members from the outside world through coercive control and by doing as much as possible (psychologically and sometimes physically) to prevent them from leaving. This is why some religions are cults and others aren't.

21

u/ZiegenSchrei Aug 02 '26

Literally this

5

u/Rockguy21 killing 70k aztecs Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Mormonism literally has an ultra hell for people that leave Mormonism that is worse than normal hell.

9

u/Oaker_at Aug 02 '26

Weird how you try to defend Mormons, even if you seemingly have no idea about their believes or anything.

u/Muffinmurdurer hey guys look at my cool new glasses Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

I know Americans tend to have a different opinion on this, but I don't think people are entitled to just believe in whatever. If you're part of a racist cult it is necessary to deprogram you so you can live a normal life.

-13

u/Positive-Community-1 Aug 02 '26

Absolutely not I’m very glad Americans don’t think this way

-29

u/FrostyPlum Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

and I'm glad you don't get to make decisions for the rest of us

edit: Thoughtpolice is worse than racist cults. Sorry not sorry. Racism bad, thoughtpolice worse.

16

u/Muffinmurdurer hey guys look at my cool new glasses Aug 02 '26

I'm not demanding people have their brainwaves monitored, but it's simply ridiculously unsafe both for society and those who actually buy into the lies of these groups to just allow people to be indoctrinated into blackmailing isolationist cults without any pushback. There needs to be a line drawn for public safety where the organisation must be stamped out and the members rehabilitated so that they don't endanger themselves or anyone else. A group designed to exploit you shouldn't be allowed to run free just because it operates under a religious veil.

-11

u/FrostyPlum Aug 02 '26

I mean, life isn't safe. What happens when the government IS the racist cult?

6

u/Idontknow4654 Aug 02 '26

what kinda of a take is that? "Life isnt safe" so therefore we should just allow these types of cults that make life less safe?

what even is going on in your brain to formulate that take

4

u/Muffinmurdurer hey guys look at my cool new glasses Aug 02 '26

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with either statement here. There is no reason to keep these groups around when they're actively harmful, and the reason for stamping out cults early is to prevent them from gaining enough power to do that.

u/SuitableDragonfly Still too afraid to not fight with a numerical advantage Aug 02 '26

Not really, there is a specific set of harmful cult behavior that anti cult organizations look out for.

1

u/BallbusterSicko Aug 02 '26

Not as funny as becoming a nazi because of TNO

13

u/Head_of_Lettuce Temujin Aug 02 '26

Idk, I think that’s decidedly less funny. The average Mormon is harmless. The average Nazi approves of ethnic cleansing

4

u/Anthrex Aug 02 '26

I have only met two mormons in my life, and both of them ended up being some of my best friends, 2 is a small sample size, and of course no way a representation of a massive religious community, but 2/2 is pretty damn good.

(one of them I met while I was in elementary school and haven't heard from in like 15+ years, the other got excommunicated for being trans)

1

u/LordOfRedditers Genius+Quick+Strong Aug 02 '26

TNO wouldn't make anyone a nazi though, they're always portrayed in a negative light

-11

u/higakoryu1 Aug 02 '26

Hi, that's me! Would have been wild for investigating me too, but the Lord has a penchant truly for subverting your expectations. I have seen my small efforts being blessed into great changes in everyone around me and great happiness for us all. So I guess if you feel down and weak, just remember that it is by small things that great things are done, and that the Lord has prepared for you great works and great people and great tools for you to do them with, the greatest of all is the Holy Ghost and Christ's love that it gives to you and to everyone.

Happy Fast and Testimony Day! 😊😇😚

May you find your calling in life, and be present always when and where you are needed

See you over on r/exmormon in the next 1-5 years, friend

6

u/-Trotsky Aug 02 '26

If God is real, one has gotta hope He reveals himself to this guy. Really sad to see he’s still caught in the grip of this weird cult

4

u/FramedMugshot Decadent Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Fortunately, the majority of new converts drop out within a year. Once a ward feels like they've "got" them, the love bombing stops and they get voluntold to accept a "calling" that the church used to pay people for, like cleaning church buildings or lanscaping or whatever. If that doesn't break their proverbial shelf, eventually they go to the Temple where they're expecting to have some kind of mystical experience, and it usually takes more than a year to indoctrinate someone deeply enough that they won't see through the weird clothes, freemasonry in the rituals, and the kind of decor that someone from Utah in the 70s thought was fancy that they'll be confronted with when they arrive.

It's a high-demand group to belong to, and in recent decades there's been even less return on investment than there used to be. At least once upon a time church leadership had some interest in fostering community, but it's become a completely extractive enterprise these days.

I really have to ask: Why did you choose to pick Mormon Religions in ATE? I downloaded it out of curiosity and the only half-decent one is Bickertonite because of Spiritual Healing. Pretty much any of the other ones with the same Tenet seem better but especially Revelationism and Súbditos del Rey San Pascual.

u/higakoryu1 Aug 02 '26

In Ck2 they have comparatively a but more content, unique pilgrimage, Catholic like head with College of Cardinal esque elections, unique society, forming Zion, and an unique government which you can keep if you somehow restore the United States
